World building can be so much fun but I'm struggling so hard right now.
I'm writing this story and I know where I want to go plotwise and I got quite the grasp on the two main characters but it is set in a fictional afterlife that is loosely inspired by several mythologies. I've already written up until the part where I first need to get into the details about some gods and now I'm stuck because now I need to make decisions.
Decisions like how many gods are there, what does the main pantheon look like, what domains do the main gods rule over, what is their stance on humanity, to which extent do they have regeneration and immortality, what are the politics and power struggles within the society of gods, which gods are neutral/benevolent/malevolent towards my protagonists and so on and so forth.
And it's not like I can bullshit any of these decisions because they could influence major scenes (like the upcoming hearing in the heavenly court) or have an impact on the character arcs of the protagonists (through posing challenges they need to overcome) or create new character dynamics with them and one another (like alliances or frenemies or the likes).
I think all of this will have to marinate in my brain for a bit longer before I can continue writing.
Okay so I got the creation mythos down and the general hierarchy is done (creation goddess -> 12 main gods -> their children -> humans ascended to godhood -> high intelligence mythical beasts -> nature spirits and immortals -> object spirits -> low intelligence mythical beasts -> regular human souls). Next up I need to figure out the 12 main gods... *sigh*
