There is absolutely nothing healthy about young girls learning that their worth comes from how small their waist is. So many girls (not just women, girls) have disordered eating thanks to our obsession with weight loss. There is nothing healthy about little girls hating their bodies. 

i think the real problem with how the wonderfully talented C H I L D R E N of stranger things keep getting put into sexual situations via the adult gaze is in the nature of the show itself.

it’s a cast of children to entertain adults. children for adults to look at. inviting the adult gaze on children at such a massive scale or at all exposes them to this rape & child exploitive culture that we all live in.

this isn’t the fault of the children, or how they look, or say their lines, or dance, or dress, or a million other things children everywhere should be allowed to do safely. it’s the fault of the adults for looking at them in sexual context. and while it’s not directly pedophilic to use children in an adult demographic storyline, it does immediately create a looked at/watcher power imbalance. children hold little to no power over themselves compared to that of an adult. they become the object to look at and we the power wielding looker. that power imbalance is what invites pedophilic nature to take hold over these children by no fault of their own.

it’s not to say every watcher of stranger things is doing so pedophilically. it is to say that we as adults, as the oppressor in this circumstances, must take responsibility over how we view these children. it’s our responsibility not to view them sexually or sexualize their fictional characters. why not? because they are children they have no power to consent to this. we hold all the sexual power because we are the adults and we hold all power over them. they are defenseless against us in the culture we have made around them.
