oh friend, if you are zendaya trash then i’m a zendaya dumpster — i love the shit out of her. spider-man is so iconic because, as stan lee put it, anyone can wear the mask — the beauty of mary jane watson over the years is that she gets to evolve in front of our eyes. the interpretation of her character changes with each iteration, reflecting the time or the writer or the story, and damn do i love zendaya’s version. she’s thoughtful and fresh and funny as hell. even in the smallest beats of homecoming, when the camera’s not even focused on her, she is ALL IN and giving so much — you could write entire songs about a one millisecond expression change she has in the background of a scene. this fandom could not be luckier to have her.  

i see people upset because it’s “not mj,” but a new character, but to that i point to the core of their relationship: this fiercely independent girl with a soft spot for a dweeb, who have been quietly destined for each other long before either of them knew it. yeah, she’s not an actress, but peter’s not a photographer and .0001% of the fandom is up in arms about that. yeah, she doesn’t have red hair, but if you think red hair is what makes mj special you have missed the whole point of her. yeah, this doesn’t follow the same script as MJxPeter in the past, but as someone who took some maaaajor liberties with MJxPeter in perpendicular, i am thrilled to see it! we don’t consume this content to hear the same story over and over, but to feel the same feelings over and over — and i think zendaya’s mj and tom holland’s peter are MORE than going to deliver on that feeling in far from home, if homecoming is any indication.
