Tall beautiful and slender, the Masai or Maasai live in the open spaces of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa. They are part of those semi-nomadic tribes. Approved in Kenya and northern Tanzania, the Masai belong to the Niloti tribal group family. It is thought that they migrated from the Nile valley in Sudan at some historical moment after 1500 BC, bringing the cattle with them. Since then they have never abandoned the semi-nomadic lifestyle and breeding as a main source of livelihood. The Masai have the reputation of valiant warriors and a proud and noble bearing. Tested by the consequences of European colonization, they are currently confined to demarcated areas of the Kenyan territory. Known for their audacity and courage, the Masai are commonly never seen without their sharp spear.

“With sharp irony and a coarse sense of humour, Kvium uncovers the absurdities of our society,” a statement from the show “Cirkus Europa” says. “The exhibition mainly focuses on issues such as tourism, entertainment, news, the refugee crisis, war and climate. He depicts the political stage and our everyday lives as one big circus act. His paintings are inhabited by tragicomic circus performers who entertain the viewer with their ignorant and morbid tricks. This enables Kvium to draw us into the circus ring, into the midst of lunacy and madness.”
