Spanish School of the 20th Century - Chicks hunting a spider, Oil on board (signed F.GĂmenez)
Oil on panel. Dimensions 37 Ă 29 cm. This work, signed by F. GĂmenez, presents an intimate and detailed nature scene, where three newly hatched chicks watch in fascination a spider hanging from its web. The oil on panel technique allows the artist to achieve a great wealth of detail, with a warm color palette evoking natural light. The composition is effective, with the chicks as the focal point and the spider on top, creating a moment of tension and curiosity. The brushwork is precise and expressive, characteristic of 20th century Spanish animal painting, celebrating the beauty and fragility of life. This work is valuable for collectors interested in Spanish art and genre painting.

đ Poissons, ecrevisses et crabes, de diverses couleurs et figures extraordinaires, . A Amsterdam, Chez Reinier & JosuĂŠ Ottens, 1754.. Original source Image description: Historical illustration depicting four stylized sea creatures with vibrant, patterned colors. On the left, a long fish with alternating golden yellow and pink bands, spiny green fins, and a toothy, dragon-like head. At the top center, a dragonfish with wing-like green fins edged in pink and a narrow, decorated body resembling a dragonâs face. Below it, a striped yellow and blue fish with green fins and an unusual curved red mouth structure. On the right, a smaller brown fish with blue spots, green fins, and a blunt snout. The creatures are numbered 51 to 54 with accompanying 18th-century French descriptions. The illustration blends naturalist detail with imaginative, dragon-inspired designs.

Livre d'heures (c. 1490).
> Illuminator: MaĂŽtre d'Antoine Rolin.
The tomb effigy of François I de la Sarra (d. 1363), housed in the Chapel of Sainte-Antoine in La Sarraz, Switzerland, is a chilling reminder of mortality. This transi tomb depicts Françoisâ decomposing body being consumed by frogs, snakes, and wormsâsymbolizing the inevitability of death and decay. These tombs, popular in the late Middle Ages, served as memento mori, urging viewers to reflect on lifeâs brevity and live virtuously.
Legends surround Françoisâ effigy: one claims he perished violently while hunting and was later found covered in frogs and reptiles, inspiring the tombâs design. Another suggests this depiction was crafted by vassals seeking symbolic revenge for his alleged tyranny. Regardless of its origins, this monument captures the medieval obsession with death and the afterlife, blending art, morality, and history into a haunting legacy.
