Honestly, take the time to read about these individuals. Remember them. Remember the opportunities that were ripped away from them. Remember the smiles and light they eluded but the terror they endured in their last moments of life. Remember every single thing you read about them and make it a point to fight for a world where this doesn’t become the new normal.Â
Jaime Guttenburg was 14 years old. Just wanted to make the proper correction.
It makes me so fucking angry that our government is so money greedy and heartless that making the world safer and saving goddamn children doesn’t mean as much as the money they get from the NRA.
Fuck our American government.
Love is a strange thing. It takes you by surprise.
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
Something inside a man goes to pieces when he has to bury the only person who ever understood him. There is no time to heal that sort of wound.

Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives as if it does not exist, and yet it’s often one of the greatest motivations for living. Some of us, in time, become so conscious of it that we live harder, more obstinately, with more fury. Some need its constant presence to even be aware of its antithesis. Others become so preoccupied with it that they go into the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival. We fear it, yet most of us fear more than anything that it may take someone other than ourselves. For the greatest fear of death is always that it will pass us by. And leave us there alone.
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
“Loving someone is like moving into a house,” Sonja used to say. “At first you fall in love with all the new things, amazed every morning that all this belongs to you, as if fearing that someone would suddenly come rushing in through the door to explain that a terrible mistake has been made, you weren’t actually supposed to live in a wonderful place like this. Then over the years the walls become weathered, the wood splinters here and there, and you start to love that house not so much because of all its perfection, but rather for its imperfections. You get to know all the nooks and crannies. How to avoid getting the key caught in the lock when it’s cold outside. Which of the floorboards flex slightly when one steps on them or exactly how to open the wardrobe doors without them creaking. These are the little secrets that make it your home.”
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
“What sort of love is it if you hand someone over when it gets difficult?” she cries, her voice shaking with sorrow. “Abandon someone when there’s resistance? Tell me what sort of love that is!”
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
Sorrow does strange things to living creatures.
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
Ove had never been asked how he lived before he met her. But if anyone had asked him, he would have answered that he didn’t.

He had never been spontaneous before in his life. But when he saw her it was as if something malfunctioned.
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
“You don’t fool me, darling,” she said with a playful little smile and crept into his big arms. “You’re dancing on the inside, Ove, when no one’s watching. And I’ll always love you for that. Whether you like it or not.”
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
For better or worse until death do us part, wasn’t that what they agreed? Ove remembers quite clearly that it was. And she wasn’t supposed to be the first one to die. Wasn’t it bloody well understood that it was his death they were talking about? Well, wasn’t it?
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
She often said that “all roads lead to something you were always predestined to do.” And for her, perhaps, it was something.
But for Ove it was someone.
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
He was never able to properly explain what happened to him that day. But he stopped being happy. He wasn’t happy for several years after that.

Then Mum died. And Dad grew even quieter. As if she took away with her the few words he’d possessed.
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
The only thing he had ever loved until he saw her was numbers.
