"Gideon's Army" centers on public defenders in the South devoted to seeking the best outcome for criminal suspects with minimal resources.
In this age of digital video, the cool kids are making docs.
Indeed.
"a unique communal work, a living portrait of the man in black"
His Johnny Cash Project blew my mind. I saw it at SXSW 2011. I can't wait to see the projects to come out of the New Frontier Story Lab.

Pat gives a pretty thorough rundown of the doc scene at SXSW. I missed my favorite panel, Caspar Sonnen's IDFA Doclab, so I appreciate her paragraph on the transmedia programs showcased in the festival's digital domain.
The Stranger Than Fiction Spring Season starts March 26 at the IFC Center. Host Thom Powers shares his strategy.
"Backup singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we've had no idea these singers are or what lives they lead, until now."

Twenty Feet From Stardom Should Be on Fresh Air
David Bianculli reviewed of the new HBO movie Phil Spector on NPR's Fresh Air today. Here is my wish that Terry Gross delivers a show dedicated to Twenty Feet From Stardom and the history of backup singers like the legendary Darlene Love. The documentary premiered at Sundance and played at SXSW.
The SXSW screening at the Paramount was amazing. Judith Hill and Darlene Love each performed a song after the film. -- standing ovations, of course.
The film is a celebrated festival darling and hits the theaters in June.
With Phil Spector, there couldn’t be another star in the same room, so he really put Darlene (Love) in a box. The best material she put out wasn’t even under her name.

'Special Flight' makes a filmmaker envious. Amazing.
Ramona Diaz, director of Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey
POV's season starts in June with Homegoings by Christine Turner. This documentary is a sensitive, rich portrait of a funeral director in Harlem; it's also a history of the African-American funeral tradition. So far, it's the only film in the lineup that I've seen.
POV announces its documentary lineup for its 26th season on PBS.
TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay - Away From Keyboard was the first film I saw at SXSW. It pushes the limits and makes you think. You can watch it all right now, too. Do it whether or not you have an opinion on piracy.
Flattr
Set your budget, and reward whatever content your like. Flattr is that simple. Or so it seems. Co-founder Peter Sunde struggled with traditional copyright laws, and the concept of social microdonations evolved. Get the back story in TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard.

I wrote a piece on the representation of women directors at CineFestival. Films directed by women make up less than 25 percent of the running time in this year's program. Of the 88 entries CineFestival received this season, only 17 were from women directors. My article "The Reel Latina Wonder" was edited into two parts. The first part is tucked in here:
