The sand under Cormacās feet was cold and damp as he walked along the strand, it was clumped together as if the rain that morning had bonded the grains together in some sort of unbreakable union. A thought that almost made the man laugh to himself once it had entered his mind, he was painfully aware that there was no such thing as an unbreakable union.Ā
Exhaling as though it would expel the thought from his mind, Cormac looked over his shoulders to see just how far back his sons were trailing behind him. Unlike their father, both Austin and Liam had opted to keep their shoes on as they walked,Ā they were unwilling to suffer the unpleasant attributes that Skerries North Beach had to offer. Cormac was certain they were likely discussing how they were suffering enough after their impromptu move from Seattle to Dublin, he knew they hated him for it but Cormac still believed it had been the correct choice for his family.Ā
At least in Ireland, he could distance himself from the heartache, betrayal and true suffering that plagued the hallways of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
āCāmon lads, this is supposed to be a family walk remember?ā Cormac called back although he knew that they would ignore him and simply claim that they hadnāt heard him over the bustling sea wind if he probed them about it later. To anyone else who may have been foolish enough to venture to the beach on such a miserable January day, it may have looked as though Cormac was running away from the pair of teenagers that heād practically dragged along with him.
It would be an untrue assumption but not an unfair one considering the fact that Cormac Hayes was always running from something.Ā

pairing: meredith grey x cormac hayes
word count: 1360 words
request: yes/no
prompt/summary: Hereās a prompt for you have a happy day although this prompt is kinda angsty lmao: Hayes gets into an accident after an argument with Meredith. He wakes up in the hospital with Meredith by his side, but gives her a silent treatment because he is still angryā¹ļø
warnings: implied cheating and mentions of car accident
a.n: i had this lying around in my asks for a while so i'm very sorry to the anon who asked for this but i hope you still enjoyed if you see this
Cormacās fingertips drummed against leather of the steering wheel as he sat at a red light. Meredith Grey was going to be the death of him, he would swear by it. Heād known before theyād started dating that Meredith had a fiery personality. Theyād locked horns more than enough times when he had first started working at Grey-Sloan. Never enough for them to stop talking though. Nothing that didnāt blow over in a few hours. They were both stubborn but eventually, the fire would die down and things would go back to usual.
Today was the first time that Cormac knew that he needed to get away from Meredith. He didnāt even want to try and sort things out right now. All he could see was red and he knew the best thing for him right now was to remove himself from the situation. So, heād left her house, gotten into his car and just drove.
It had been two months since he had started dating Meredith. Two months since the timing had finally been right, their kids fully onboard and Cormac had found the courage to ask her out again. He had been sure she was going to say no. Why would she even want to say yes? They had tried before, and heād been the one to break things off after Austin began to suffer with panic attacks.
Sheād said yes though. And Cormac was stupid enough to know that they couldnāt just pick up where they left off. Heād known that Meredith had been seeing someone before and he couldnāt blame her. They werenāt together, she was a free agent. What mattered most to him was the fact that theyād both managed to find their way back to each other.
The past two months had flown by, even better than when they had first been dating. Austin had still been apprehensive when Cormac had spoken to his sons but the signs of him having a panic attack was no longer there. He was more willing to open up and talk to Cormac about what had been worrying him and his father was able to assuage the fears of forgetting about or replacing Abigail.
Things had taken a turn today though. Heād gone over to Meredithās for lunch. She had been grabbing some plates from the kitchen when her phone had buzzed on the coffee table. Cormac hadnāt meant to look at it. He wasnāt that kind of guy. The type that needed to check on who his girlfriend was messaging, who wanted access to her phone. It was just a glance over when it buzzed, and he wished he hadnāt because what caught his eye was two heart emojis.
Cormac Hayes may not have been as young as he once was. His kids reminded him of that at least once a week when he tried to decipher their sentences, using words he wasnāt even sure were in any kind of dictionary. But even he couldnāt misread what a red love heart, two red love hearts, meant. He wasnāt that out of touch.
He couldnāt tear away his eyes from the message at that point. At first, his head began to rationalise that it could easily be one of the kids. But he was sure none of them had a phone just yet, although Zola had been pestering her mother for one over the past few weeks. Next, his eyes had caught sight of the name at the top of the message.
Nick.
Nick, as in the guy Meredith had been seeing before? The transplant surgeon. Cormac had taken a deep breathe, trying not to jump to conclusions. He hadnāt read the rest of the text. Guilt already setting in as he felt awful for looking in the first place. He placed the whole thing to the back of his mind when Meredith had come back in with food and lunch had gone well until she had picked up her phone. Sheād been engrossed in the messages, barely paying attention to Cormac as she smiled down at the lit-up screen.
It had gone on for half an hour before Cormac finally asked her what was going on. Meredith immediately raised her hackles, getting defensive at his simple question. And it just seemed to explode from there. Both of them stood up from the sofa, voice raised and unpleasantries exchanged.
Cormac hadnāt wanted an argument though. He just wanted to know what was going on. To understand if he was getting his wires crossed but instead, Meredith bit at him quickly and it had hurt. Sheād yelled and asked if he didnāt trust her. What was the point in them being together if he didnāt? Heād tried to explain that he did trust her but this wasnāt the first time she had ignored him for her phone when theyād been spending time together. When the yelling had reached a crescendo, Cormac knew that he had to leave.
And that was what had bought him here. Sat at a junction. Waiting for a red light to turn green so he could just get further away from Meredithās house. Cormac wasnāt usually one to run away from his problem. Aside from the fact that he did run to Switzerland with the boys after Irene had died⦠but that had been a very different circumstance. Usually though, he would try and work things through. Try and reach a solution. He just couldnāt bring himself to stay in that house with Meredith any longer.
She infuriated him to no end. Making it seem like it was his fault all along. Cormac had wanted a few simple answers. He hadnāt been aggressive or confrontational in the way he had asked but Meredithās defensiveness had rubbed him up the wrong way. If he had hair to pull out, Cormac would have lost half of it by now.
The sound of a blaring horn had pulled him out of his thoughts. The next thing he felt was an impact to the side of the car and then nothing. A rhythmic, and slightly
A rhythmic, and slightly annoying beeping, were the first things that Cormac heard. He kept his eyes shut tight. His head was banging and his body ached like never before.
āBoys, could you please turn off that alarm if you arenāt going to wake up,ā he just about croaked out.
āSorry to disappoint but it isnāt an alarm. I can mute the machine though, if itās bothering you.ā
That voice definitely didnāt belong to Liam or Austin. Slowly opening his eyes, Cormac winced slightly as he got used to the lights in the room befoe looking to his left where the voice had come from. Sat on the edge of the chair was Meredith, looking like sheād just gone ten rounds in a boxing ring.
āIām so glad youāre okay! Bailey called to say you were in an accident and-ā
āWhat are you doing here, Meredith?ā Cormac quickly cut her off.
Slightly stunned, Meredith stumbled ovr her words for a minute before answering. āCormac, you were in a car accident.ā
āI understand that but I donāt know why youāre here. You said that you were done.ā
āCormac, I-I didnāt mean that and you were just in an accident and-ā
āCould you please just leave?ā
āIām sorry?ā
Cormac may not have fully been able to remember the accident that had landed him in a hospital bed but he did remember the argument he had with Meredith that lef him to being in the car in the first place. His anger and upset at her had still not subsided. He didnāt care if it sounded petty or childish. Right now, he did not want Meredith Grey in his hospital room.
āJust leave, I donāt want you here, Meredith.ā
With Cormac not giving her any kind of eye contact, Meredith knew he was deadly serious. Not wanting to cause him anymore stress and feeling hurt at his reaction at seeing her, she grabbed her bag and quietly left the room without saying another word. Her heart breaking in the process.

āRemind me, why am I awake at 6 AM on a Saturday when itās my day off and the kids are with Amelia and Maggie?ā Meredith rubbed her eyes with the sleeves of her old, ratty Dartmouth t-shirt. Sheād pulled her hair up into a ponytail, sleep still evident in her eyes.
She had fully been planning to sleep in until eleven. That was until she heard incessant knocking on her front door. Panicking that something had happened to the kids, Meredith had thrown the sheet off her and ran down the stairs. Her anxiety eased when she saw Cormac on the other side of the door. Bright-eyed and dressed in a green top that she had never seen before.
āI did tell you yesterday eveningā¦ā
āI was half asleep yesterday evening,ā Meredith whined as she made her way into the living room, falling back on the sofa with her eyes closed.
When Cormac didnāt answer, Meredith propped herself up on her elbows, turning around to see him in the kitchen. āWhatās in the bag?ā She eyed it suspiciously as Cormac pulled out two plates from the cupboard.
āWaffles and coffee because I know youāre useless without caffeine in the mornings.ā
Meredith perked up a bit at the mention of caffeine and shot Cormac a grin before sitting up properly. Balancing the plates and two takeaway cups of coffee in his hands, Cormac walked back into the living, passing Meredith her breakfast.
āAs much as I appreciate the sugar and caffeine, I would love it more if it was in three hours.ā
āYou really werenāt paying attention yesterday?ā He arched a brow.
āSorry,ā Meredith gave him an apologetic smile. āI was just exhausted after surgery, I canāt even remember getting into my bed.ā
Cormac shook his head, smiling. āYou donāt need to apologise, I could tell you were exhausted yesterday.ā
āThanks⦠so are you going to tell me why youāre here then?ā
āI will if you wouldnāt mind passing me the remote?ā
Curious as to what in the world was going on, Meredith handed over the remote and watched as Cormac flicked through the channel before finally settling on one.ā
āThe Six Nations?ā Meredith squinted at the screen, āWhat is that?ā
With a huge grin on his face, Cormac turned to face her. āOne of the best championships for the best sport in the world.ā
āWhich would be?ā
āRugby,ā he responded matter-of-factly.
āIs this one of your Irish things?ā
Cormac rolled his eyes before settling back on the sofa. āItās a world thing, America just doesnāt do that good in it for the country to care.ā He watched the screen with a grin on his face as the Irish national anthem finished and the men in green and red dispersed across the field.
āOkay, so what team are we supporting?ā
After giving her a pointed look, Cormac looked at his top.
āAh, yeah, okay. The guys in green thenā¦ā
āIf you support the Welsh, weāre going to have an issue.ā
āNo no! Go Ireland!ā Meredith gave a half-hearted fist pump.
Sheād never been particularly interested in sport. Derek loved his golfing and fishing but thankfully, she hadnāt had to be a part of any of that. And now, Cormac was sitting in her house watching a sport she had no clue about. Maybe he wouldnāt notice if she fell asleep. Placing her empty plate on the table, Meredith cradled the cup of coffee in both her hands as the whistle blew. Watching for a couple of minutes, her brow furrowed as she tried to figure out what was going on.
āSo, this is kind of like American football?ā
Cormac looked at her incredulously. Meredith had never seen him look so offended. āThis is something like American football!ā
āThe ball is the same shape and theyāre throwing it around.ā
With one eye still on the match, Cormac sighed and began to explain the many differences and intricacies of rugby. Much to Meredithās own surprise, she found herself actually interested in what Cormac was saying. As she carried on watching the first half of the game, Meredith found herself enjoying it more now that she knew what was going on. When the whistle blew and the 30 men started to make their way off the field, Meredith was slightly disappointed.
āIs that it?ā
Chuckling, Cormac turned to face her, giving her his full attention. āThat was just the first half. Theyāll have a 15-minute break and then theyāll be back out.ā
Meredith then began to flood with him with even more questions, knowing that neither of them were going to be missing anything. There was a sparkle in her eye as she got more excited about the sport and Cormac didnāt even manage to bite back a grin. He hadnāt been expecting Meredith to be this invested in the game, but she had a genuine interest in what was going on and it made his day. Being able to watch rugby felt like a small part of home.
Cormac shrugged, āItās been years since I last played. When I moved to the US, there werenāt any clubs near where I was and even if there was, I wouldnāt have had the time with residency and then the kids came along.ā He shook his head, pulling away from the feelings of nostalgia. āI tell you what I miss most though. Actually going to a rugby match.ā
āWhatās it like?ā
āItās just the most amazing feeling. The atmosphere in the Aviva Stadium at full capacity⦠itās just something else entirely. Completely electric. You donāt need to know the guy sitting next to you and by the end of the match, youāre talking like youāve known each other for years. Doesnāt matter whoās supporting who. Youāre there for the love of the game.ā Grinning, he clasped his hand with Meredithās. āIām going to have to take you one day.ā
āI like the sound of that,ā And she meant it, 40 minutes of rugby and she could understand why some people were so obsessed with sport. āNow, shush, theyāre about to start up again!ā

Meredith is back from Minnesota after accepting the offer of Dr. Hamilton. Even though she has to let go of the role of residency director, sheās happy that sheās giving it back to Richard. She was excited on this new journey she was doing whether it be flying back and fourth from Seattle to Minnesota, she knew that this was right. However, she didnāt count on bumping into Nick, her former patient, but with this encounter she figured out that when it came to her having feelings for him, they were gone.
They had a conversation about what was happening in their life and she mentioned Hayes. She said that they have been dating for a while, but had to break things off because of his son Austin, but she was hoping that when heās adjusted to the idea that his dad is able to date, that sheās be his first option, just like he was for her.
Flashback:
Nick: āSo youāre holding on to something that you may not know may work out?ā
Meredith: āYeah, heās the one that helped me when I was in the coma. He told me to fight for my kids.ā
āI see now, so there isnāt really a chance for me then, I suppose?ā
āIām sorry, but we connect on a level that I havenāt felt in a while. Itās like we both know the pain weāve been through, and my kids like him. And every time Iām with him itās like my world is that much better.ā
End of Flashback
As sheās walking down the hallways, she hears that heavy Irish accent that just makes her stomach burst into butterflies. She already talked to him about Minnesota, but she failed to mention that she went on a ādateā with Nick. She was planning on telling him today and that it was nothing more than that. That she saw that he was her endgame.
As sheās walking towards his way, she notices him talking to a red head, Megan Hunt. They were laughing, and it made her jealous, however; she had to push back her feelings since they werenāt together. She wasnāt expecting it, but Hayes is a really attractive man, so she should expect every girl at the hospital to jump at him.
Meredith: āHelloā
Hayes didnāt expect her to be back so soon from her trip from Minnesota, but he was happy about it, he was thrilled. Being able to just see and smell her scent was every thing he needed to make his day.
āGrey, I didnāt expect you to be here so soonā
āWell, here I am. Hey, Meganā
āHey, Meredith. Hayes and I were just talking about my abdominal wall transplant, and how I think itās my own idea that won you your Harper Avery. Well anyways Iāll see you guys around, I have to go talk to Owenā. As she left, she patted Hayesās shoulder which made Meredith a bit more jealous, hoping her poker face would hide her actually true feelings.
However, Hayes, knew something was up since he knew that she didnāt say anything after. Plus he saw her face once Megan touched his shoulder. He chuckled at her.
āWhatās so funny Hayes?ā
āIf I didnāt know any better, Iād say your jealous Grey.ā
āMe, jealous? Never. Plus youād guys would make a cute couple.ā
āOh really, well I was planning to ask her out for a drink. What do you think, Grey?ā
As he said that, her face turned red. She didnāt know what was coming over her. All she knew was that she didnāt like the idea that Hayes would go on a date with someone else .
āCan we talk somewhere privately, Mac.ā
Once he noticed that she used his first name, he knew something was up. It was like his stomach dropped, hoping that it wasnāt bad news. He was still grappling with the idea that he was going to see her less after she told him that she accepted the offer and that she was going to fly back and fourth every week.
āLetās go to my office.ā He said as he motioned her to follow him. It was dead silence as they were walking towards the elevator heading towards the Peds Floor where his office was at. He was thinking about the things she could tell him. Whether it be she met another man over there, or if sheās done waiting for him.
As they head towards the office he finally asks:
āGrey, is it something I should be worried aboutā
āYes and no, well I donāt know. Just hear me out and you can decide for yourself.ā
As he opens the door of his office to let her in, sheās starting to get more nervous and sheās now thinking if this was the right way to go. She was so close into not telling him anything, but he already shut the door, so there was not going back.
āYou seem anxious Grey. Do you want a drink?ā As he was pulling out his half empty bottle of Irish whiskey he had in his drawer. Maybe this would help ease the nerves and the tension all built inside of her.
āYes, Iād like that.ā As he pours the drinks into the foam coffee cups he usually steals from the attending lounge, sheās just taking in his presence. Even though sheās staring at him, sheās in awe of the man he is.
āSo, whatās the thing you needed to talk to me about?ā He finally asks while handling her the drink.
āWellā¦.the thing isā she states before taking a big sip from the cup he just gave her.
As sheās finishing her story about Nick and her response to saying how sheās wouldnāt be with him because there was someone else, that someone being him, was a big relief to Hayes. He understood that no matter what, he made an impact on her , as much as she did to him. He understood what happened and just had a big smile on his face.
āSo thatās that. I hope youāre not mad at me Mac.ā
āWhy would I be mad, Meredith. You just told me that I am the person you want and turned down a guy who is plain simply also in awe of you.ā
As heās saying that, heās moving a bit closer to Meredith, trying to close the gap in between them, since they were talking standing up. She noticed the small gesture and she did the same .
āLook Mer, i know itās hard not being together cause of my son Austin, and itās that much painful for me than it is for you, but once I get this situation sorted through, I hope you say yes to me giving you a proper dinner date.ā
āI would love that, Cormac.ā
As they are both looking at each other eye to eye, with the gap closed. He took his chance to seal the deal. He cupped her face with his hands and gave her a kiss, something that he wanted to do forever. Stunned by the kiss, she melted into his arms. As the kiss started to take its turn into being a more passionate one, his hands on her waist, and her hands around his neck, he pulled away, knowing that if he wouldāve let it keep on going for a bit longer , things wouldāve heated up and theyād be on the couch of his office fully naked. She also realized that and just sighed.
āI hope itās not too much longer, until I get to call you mine, Grey.ā
when it comes to seasons 16 and the new season 18 of greys anatomy, I have some things to say ā¦.
I understand that theyāre hyping up the idea of Mer and Nick but it gets to the point where it just feels forced , like I wouldnāt be mad that they were dating back in season 14-15, but they didnāt have him back and itās like why have her go back with someone where sheās already interested in someone else.
My issue comes with the fact that they built up merhayes for legit two years and the fact that they just threw away that concept makes it so tiring because it just seems like theyāre just recycling the fact that she hasnāt found her Derek replacement. The thing is, Derek is Derek and thereās no one like him, they might as well have her end with someone that understands that even though she lost someone that meant so much they wouldnāt be able to replace them and they accept the fact. Which is why I always rooted for Nathan and Hayes. They understand that they both lost people who they considered theyāre āDerekā they would never expect their lover to fill that spot.
When it comes to Nick, it just seems like theyāre trying to find another Derek when that canāt happen. Just have her be with Hayes because at the point they actually understand each other, get each other, but also the fact that theyāre able to be independent. When it comes to Nick, it just feels like a creep when he knows so much or tries so hard to get her attention and what not. Like sir it wasnāt cute camping out her hotel room or even being at the hospital where she is potentially going to work for in order to cure Parkinsonās.
Hi there! I hope this prompt finds you wellš: Hayes missing Meredith and calling Her every night while he was away for a weeklong conference.
I'm finally back to writing! This is a nearly 5k fic and I really hope you guys enjoy
These Days Are So Long When I Call You My Home - Merhayes
Day One
Meredith sighed, slopping back into the chair in her office and checked her phone for the 30th time that day. Cormac was leaving for a week-long conference in New York. It was the longest they would have been apart since theyād gotten together, and Meredith hadnāt realised how much she was going to end up missing him. Heād popped down to her house yesterday night to say goodbye but that already felt like weeks ago. Meredith had grown used to having a cup of coffee in the mornings with him, whether that was at the hospital or one of their homes, she was used to him trying to sneak a kiss in whenever he saw her in the corridor. His presence in her life had become a constant that she had looked forward to each morning she woke up.
With some determination, Meredith placed her phone down on her desk, face down. She hadnāt felt like this in a long time. That feeling of longing, of wanting to be around someone, the feeling of safety where you were in their proximity.
Realising that there was no point in fighting against the feeling that continued to well inside of her, Meredith picked up her phone, found Cormacās number and hit call. She only had to wait for two rings before a smooth, Irish lilt filled the line causing every bit of tension Meredith was holding in her muscles to release.
āMeredith, is everything alright?ā Cormacās concerned tone immediately made Meredith feel guilty and stupid for calling him.
āHey, no no, everything is good, sorry.ā
āItās okay, I just got a bit worried when I saw your name on the screen. I thought youād be at work.ā
Meredith bit her lip; she was at work and there wasnāt a problem so was she really going to admit to Cormac why she had called? āI am. I finished up in surgery, so I came back to my office and⦠I miss you.ā
There. She had said it. It was out in the open now. There wasnāt any point hiding things from Cormac, he had the knack of knowing exactly what was going on in her head without her even having to say anything.
āYou know that Iām still at the airport, right? In Seattle?ā From the mirth in his voice, Meredith knew that he was grinning right now. She wasnāt going to hear the end of this from him but right now, she didnāt care.
Sighing, Meredith kicked off her trainers and walked over to the sofa, tucking her feet under her as she took a seat on it. āI know, I know⦠It just felt weird. Not having you there when I woke up or seeing you at work this morning. I didnāt think I would miss you this much but itās like losing my right arm or something⦠Itās stupid.ā She mumbled the last part.
āIt isnāt stupid, Meredith because Iāve been feeling the same. But itās seven days and when I get back, you, me and the kids will all go out and do something together. Iām pretty sure Austin was on about a circus thatās coming into town, we can make a proper day of it, the seven of us.ā
If anyone had told Meredith Grey that she would be part of a family of seven back in her intern year she probably would have laughed in their face. Now, the thought of the seven of them all bundled together around a dinner table, spending days out together, was enough to make her smile. Finding a way to blend their two families together hadnāt always been easy, but over the course of the past few months, the kids had begun to share a relationship and bond that only siblings could have and theyād more than warmed up to their parentās other half.
āI like the sound of that.ā
āItās a done deal then.ā
In the background of the call, Meredith could hear a cracking female voice as Cormac paused for a moment. āThatās the call to my gate. Sorry, Mer, Iām going to have to go.ā
āHave a safe flight and please text when you land.ā Flying was something that Meredith was never going to feel comfortable with and there was just as much anxiety coursing through her when someone she loves was boarding a plane. She knew that she wasnāt going to feel completely at ease until Cormacās plane had landed in JFK and sheād had a text from his as confirmation.
āI promise I will. I love you.ā
āI love you too.ā
Day Two
As she untangled her braids that had been carefully formed on the top of her head, Meredith made herself comfy on an unabandoned gurney pushed against the wall of a deserted corridor. She knew that the surgery would be risky, the patient had gone in knowing exactly what the statistics were but that never really lessened the blow of losing someone on the table. Crossing her legs on the gurney, Meredith let her head fall back against the wall and closed her eyes. All she wanted to do right now was go home and squeeze her kids tight, but she still had another four hours left of her shift.
The feeling of her phone vibrating against her thigh nearly made her groan. She just needed five minutes of being on her own before she had to step back into the shoes of a surgeon again. This job didn't work like that though and Meredith was well aware. Slipping her phone out of her pocket relief immediately washed over her when she realised that it wasn't a page and instead was her boyfriend texting to ask if she was free to call. In a split second, she had hit the facetime button, needing to see his face.
And there he was, soft smile, sleepy eyes, wearing a white shirt.
"Hey, bub," the stupid nickname that had started as a joke to wind Meredith up had now stuck. Whilst she used to yell at him to stop, the endearment now brought a smile to her face.
"Hey, how are you doing?"
"Exhausted and missing you." Meredith couldn't help but laugh at Cormac's small pout.
āOnly five more days.ā
āAye but the days are dragging, canāt say that this conference is the most interesting thing in the world.ā
āI thought you were looking forward to this one.ā Cormac had been ongoing on about the International Conference for Paediatric Brain Injury for weeks in the run-up to this trip.
āI still am but the past two days havenāt given me any new information. Tomorrow should be better though.ā
Meredith nodded along as he spoke, trying and failing to stile a yawn. āHowās your day been? Did the surgery go alright?ā Concern laced his voice. Meredith had texted him that morning about the surgery and he knew that it was a tricky one/
āIt⦠He didnāt make itā¦ā Meredith squeezed her eyes shut, her voice a whisper.
Cormac winced, he could hear the pain, see the exhaustion in her body. He wished for nothing more than to be able to hold her right now, but a video call was going to have to be what he settled for.
āIām sorry, Mer, can I do anything?ā
Meredith shook her head a tired smile on her lips. āIāll be fine. My shift is over in a few hours and Iām just gonna head straight home and watch a movie with the kids.ā
āWell, there are two new tubs of strawberry ice cream in your freezer for you lot to enjoy.ā
āI thought I ran out the other day.ā
āYou did and you complained to me about it the entire way home from work so I made sure you were stocked up before I left.ā
It was things like that, the small day-to-day things that could easily be brushed off that made Meredith fall harder for him.
After another five minutes, their call was interrupted by an emergency page.
āIām gonna have to go, they need me at the Pit.ā Meredith was feeling a little more rejuvenated after being able to see Cormac. Her chest no longer feeling so heavy
āGo and take care. I love you, bub.ā
Meredith had slipped off the gurney and had begun to make her way to the Pit, āI love you too, Iāll text after work!ā
Day Three
Cormac finally shut the lid of his laptop, laying back against the pillow. The conference had definitely ramped up compared to the past two days and heād found the day go by much quicker. Heād made note of all the papers he wanted to read into after going to some poster presentations and listening to a few talks. Heād started the on the list after heād had dinner.
It was 9 PM now and he knew that back in Seattle, Meredith should be done with work and back home. He hadnāt expected to miss her as much as he had over the past three days. He had grown accustomed to getting through life with just himself and his boys and as they had gotten older, heād grown used to having to do more things by himself. With Meredith entering his life though, Cormac had found that there were now fewer and fewer things that he had to get through by himself. He now had someone that he was able to lean on and he wasnāt sure he could go back to the way things were.
Pulling his phone off charge, Cormac rang Meredith straight away. The disappointment began to well in him as the phone continued to ring.
āHey!ā The sound of Meredithās voice immediately perked Cormac up.
āMer, hey. I hope youāre not busy?ā He was slightly worried that heād caught her in the middle of some time with her kids, although he was pretty sure they all had some kind of extra-curricular activity going on tonight. He pretty much knew their schedules off by heart at this point.
āNo no, I think the boys are good for a minute.ā
āThe boys?ā Cormac asked slightly confused.
āAustin and Liam came around earlier, they needed some help with homework so weāve been sat at the dining room table for a little while now, but I think we all need a break. I forgot how much I hate AP World History.ā
Cormac chuckled, āYeah, Iām glad I got out of that one. I hope you donāt mind the boys coming down?ā Heād rang them this morning before theyād gone to school and had texted them frequently throughout the day to check up on them, not that he got replies very often.
āNo, I told them they could come down while you were away if they needed anything. I just hadnāt expected them to take me up on the offer.ā Meredith was still worried that the Hayesā boys didnāt like her and were just putting up with her for their fatherās sake.
Cormac chuckled, āYou know, I think there are days where they like you more than me. They definitely think youāre cooler than me.ā
Scoffing, Meredith shook her head, āI mean⦠itās not like that a high bar to reachā¦ā
āOoft, you do wonders for my ego, Grey.ā He gently teased. āSeriously though, they love hearing about your surgeries and your awards. They think you like some kind of surgical Rockstar.ā
Musical laughter filled Cormac's ear as Meredith remembered a time when Christina had said something similar during their residency. Surgical rockstars, surgical royalty, isnāt that what they had all aspired to at the start of their careers? They wanted those accolades from award governing bodies and medical journals but somehow, knowing that two teenage boys thought that of her meant so much more to Meredith.
āMeredith, could you help me with this trig question?ā
Cormac could hear the voice of his youngest. He was pretty sure he had taught them not to yell when people were on the phone. He was glad that. His boys had become so comfortable around Meredith though, evident by the fact that theyād gone to her house without him even being there.
āYeah, be there in a second. Do you guys want to talk to your dad?ā Her voice sounded more distant as she pulled the phone away from her ear.
There was a little mumbling before Meredith spoke again, āThe boys want to talk so Iām gonna give the phone to them for a bit.ā
āSounds good, Iāll text you after if they donāt give the phone back?ā Knowing his kids, theyād be in such a rush to get off the phone that they would end the call before even asking if he wanted to talk to Meredith again.
āYeah, sounds like a plan to me.ā
āI love you, Mer.ā
āI love you too.ā
Day Four
Cormac made a swift from the ballroom of the hotel. Theyād rearranged the furniture, laying out white clothed tables for a dinner organised by the convention. Another networking opportunity and the chance to get a fancy meal that the attendees didnāt have to pay for. It definitely wasnāt something to complain about. Usually, Cormac didnāt mind the dinners. Most of the time, the nights would be filled with mindless chatter and whatever whiskey they had at the bar. Tonight though, he was out of his seat the minute dessert was finished.
The night hadnāt started off badly, just like most of the other conference dinners. But then he saw Felix Cavanaugh in the crowd before coming to sit opposite him. Seeing him had made Cormacās body go numb, his breath catching in his throat. It was a face he hadnāt seen in a while; one he hadnāt thought he would see anytime soon. Cormac and Felix had been in the same residency class and had grown to be good friends. Whilst Cormac had pursued paediatric surgery, Felix had moved towards neuro. Eventually, their specialities had them moving to opposite coasts after finishing their residency. At first, the two of them had kept in touch but after Abigailās diagnosis, Cormac had cut off contact with most people, his sole focus on keeping his family afloat and his wife alive.
Both men had been in shock to see each other but whilst Felix had been excited, Cormac had a sense of dread filling him. News about Abi hadnāt exactly been widespread, and Felix had come in asking a whole manner of questions about work and the kids and Abigail. When Cormac had told him what had happened, he saw the look of pity on Felixās face, and it was too much to handle. The feeling of grief began to overwhelm him, the room suddenly felt too small. For three courses, Cormac had managed to keep a plastic smile on his face, the chats with Felix had basically drawn to a close and Cormac dashed to his room the minute that he was able to.
He tugged the tie off his neck, unbuttoning the top two buttons of his shirt, hoping that he would find it easier to breathe. Sitting on the edge of his bed, Cormac rubbed his hands across his face. His eyes were burning, jaw clenched. The feeling of grief never completely left but it had been a long time it had hit Cormac this hard, like a sucker punch. He reached for his phone in his trouser pocket, calling Meredith without a second thought.
āHello?ā A groggy and confused voice answered the call making Cormac feel guilty.
āMer, sorry, I didnāt mean to⦠Did I wake you up?ā
āHuh,ā Meredith blinked a few times, pushing herself up and leaning on the pillows against the arm of the sofa. āHey, sorry, I kind of took a nap after work.ā
āIām so sorry, I didnāt mean to wake you. You go back to sleep; we can talk later.ā The apologies feel in quick succession out of Cormacās mouth.
āNo, itās okay, honestly. Iām awake, if I sleep anymore, thereās no way Iām getting to sleep tonight. Is everything okay?ā Fully awake, Meredith was able to register the distress in her boyfriendās voice.
āI-I donāt know,ā hearing the crack in his voice was enough to make Meredithās heartbreak and panic set in.
āDo you want to talk about it?ā
Cormac rubbed his eyes with the heel of his palm. He didnāt want to cry, not right now. He wasnāt sure he was going to be able to start if he carried on. āThere was this guy at dinner, I did my residency with himā¦ā Once Cormac had finished telling Meredith everything he felt as though he had exhausted every energy pool within him. His throat felt dry and scratchy and at some point, tears had begun to stream down his face, and he didnāt even bother wiping them away.
āCormacā¦ā
āIām sorry. I feel awful coming to talk to you about this but⦠I didnāt know how else to go to.ā
āPlease donāt say sorry. Iām glad you came to me; you should be able to come to me about things like this.ā Theyād spoken to each other a lot about Abigail and Derek in the early days of getting to know each other and whilst they werenāt brought up in conversation as often these days, the two of them still shared the same kind of loss. āThere are still people that come into the hospital asking for Derek and every time it happens it feels like someone had taken all the oxygen out of the room. I know that it can feel like reliving the worst parts of your life.ā
āI hate it, Meredith. I hate this feeling and I wish it could stop.ā Meredith had never heard his voice sound so small, so childlike and she wished she could do something to protect him from those feelings.
āI know, I know. You know Iād do anything to take this away from you⦠Can I do anything?ā
There were a few moments of silence down the line which made Meredith even more worried.
āIām just exhausted, Mer. I want to sleep but I canāt⦠when itās quiet, everything just plays around in my head. I get it to calm down and it feels like something is crushing my chest.ā
The feeling of helplessness was not one that Meredith was akin to. It wasnāt very often that she faced a situation where she had nothing in her arsenal to help with. In the end, there was only one thing that Meredith was able to come up with.
āHow about I stay on the phone with you. I can read you a medical journal so itās not quiet and you can try and get some sleep. And if not, then you know that Iām right there for you.ā
āI canāt ask you to do that⦠the kidsā¦ā
āYou arenāt asking me to do anything, Iām offering, and the kids are with Maggie and Winston for ice cream.ā
āAre you sure?ā Cormac had already begun to kick off his shoes and crawl under the covers. He didnāt even have the will to change into pyjamas.
āIām sure, you comfy?ā Meredith reached for a journal on top of the coffee table and flipped to the last dog-eared page. āBecause this is a good one.ā
āIām comfy, and Mer?ā
āHm?ā
āI love you.ā
āI love you too.ā
Day Five
A day off on the weekend was like gold dust. 24 hours where Meredith was able to spend time with her kids without having to worry about pages or school drop-offs. The four of them alongside Austin and Liam were sprawled out across Meredithās living room floor watching Jurassic Park.
It hadnāt taken long for Cormac to eventually fall asleep last night but even then, Meredith stayed on a little while longer to make sure that he wasnāt going to wake up. Sheād kept her phone within reach and on loud all night. Theyād text since she had woken up and Cormac seemed to be feeling a little better, but Meredith knew that it would take a few days for the sinking feeling of grief to dampen down to a more manageable level again. Not being able to be with his kids probably wasnāt helping either.
With the kids entranced with the film and Liam keeping Bailey entertained with dinosaur facts, Meredith felt the muscles in her body finally relax. Domestic comfort wasnāt something that she had thought would be in her life back when she was young, but she was now lucky enough to experience that kind of love and comfort every day when she got home. A serene smile was placed on her lips as she looked at the five kids under her care.
The ringtone from her phone pulled Meredith out of her thoughts though. Zola swivelled around to give her mum a quick glare. āYou said no phones during films!ā
āSorry, Zo-Zo, itās just Cormac.ā
āDa?ā Liam looked up from his conversation with Bailey.
āHeās facetiming if you all want to come over here.ā
Suddenly a gaggle of kids was upon her. Ellis had clambered onto her lap, Liam and Austin had sat behind her on the sofa and Bailey and Zola were sat on the floor on either side of her. Once they were all in place, Meredith accepted the call.
āHe- Oh wow!ā Cormac eyes widened and a large grin spread across his face when he saw all of the kids.
āHey, guys!ā
There was a blur of hiās, helloās and how are youās as all of them began to talk at the same time making Meredith and Cormac laugh. In the end, Meredith decided to let each of the kids take the phone to talk to him, passing it to Liam and Austin first. Ellis was the last one, who was happily chatting to Cormac about the new dress her mum had bought her for a talent show.
āDo ya mind if I talk to your mum for a bit, sweetheart?ā
Ellis gave it some thought before finally nodding her head. āOkay, bye-bye, Mac!ā
āBye, Ellis!ā
Ellis passed back the phone to Meredith and crawled off her lap to join the other kids. All of them were again engrossed in the movie. Meredith got up out of her seat and wandered into the kitchen.
āHey, how are you feeling today?ā
Cormac gave a half-hearted shrug. āEh, okay, better than last night.ā He sighed, āThank you for everything.ā
āYou donāt need to say thank you, itās what Iām here for.ā
āMom, come on! Youāre missing the best part!ā Baileyās voice was loud enough to be heard throughout the entire house.
āYouāve been summoned?ā Cormac chuckled.
āI should go before he starts a riot.ā Meredith had learned to expect the unexpected when it came to her kids and Bailey was sometimes in an entirely different ballpark.
āIāll leave you to that, I love you.ā
āI love you too.ā
Day Six
āI just canāt believe how well the kids get on.ā
After coming back home after a late-night finish, Meredith had text Cormac just to let him know that she got home safely. She hadnāt expected a text back asking if she was up for a phone call. He had stayed up, waiting for her to come home since they hadnāt had a chance to talk that day.
āWould you rather them be at each otherās throat?ā Cormac asked.
āCould you imagine? No, thanks.ā Meredith rolled onto her stomach on her bed. āI guess I just wasnāt expecting them to slot into everything the way they have. I mean, I know that they have their small arguments butā¦ā
āFeel like it just came too easily?ā
Meredith murmured in agreement. Nothing in her life had ever come easily and it had felt strange that something as big as this had been so straightforward. She gnawed on her lip as she thought about all the ways this could go wrong.
āHey, I can hear your gears turning from here. Please donāt give into to the thought.ā
āThe thoughts?ā Meredith raised a browed, temporarily forgetting all the catastrophic situations that had been playing in her mind.
āThe dark, twisty thoughts.ā He had taken the phrase that Meredith had used to describe the early days in residency. āDonāt give into them. Letās just be thankful that for the first time in a long time, something has been easy.ā
Processing his words, Meredith slowly agreed with him. āI guess so.ā
āIsnāt life a little nicer when you arenāt trying to guess whatās going wrong?ā
āIām sorry but since when did you become a beacon of positivity and sunshine?ā Cormac wasnāt exactly known for his positive demeanour in the hospital.
He chuckled lowly, āI guess thatās what love does to you.ā
āOh gosh,ā Meredith rolled her eyes. āPlease, I donāt think Iām going to cope if you become all lovestruck and mushy.ā
āI thought youād like lovestruck and mushy.ā
āBrooding and moody seems more my type these days,ā she teased.
āMoody?ā Cormac feigned offence.
āUh, do you not remember the way you were when you first started?ā
āWell, there was a certain doctor there than insisted on pushing all of my buttons.ā
It was something that they constantly teased each other about. Whilst it had surprised them both when feelings had begun to develop, everyone around them had been waiting with bated breath for them to get together.
āI stopped think about the future after Abigail passed,ā Cormac voice had dipped. āStopped hoping and living. I was just in survival mode. Trying to get through one day at a time and just making sure that the boys were okay. You put everything I knew on its head. Made me feel like it was okay to be happy again. My world stopped crumbing when you entered my life, Meredith Grey, and between the two of us and the kids, weāre rebuilding it again.ā
The silence down the end of the phone call had made Cormac think that Meredith had gone to sleep but then he heard quiet sniffling. āMer?ā
āYouāre an idiot who makes me cry.ā
āAn idiot that you love though?ā
āYeah, for some unknown reasonā¦ā
Day Seven
Meredith had been praying the entire day that an emergency wouldnāt come into the pit. Usually, she would love the adrenaline rush that came with a full Pit and back-to-back surgeries but not today. Cormac was meant to be landing this evening and she was rallying the kids down to his house so that they could all have dinner together. The day was passing by unbearably slowly though. Even surgeries that flew by seemed to be agonisingly long.
Two surgeries in and lunch done, Meredith had walked back to her office. Her afternoon rounds didnāt start for another twenty minutes so she had some time to collect the files that she needed and update a few charts. Checking the time on her watch, Meredith realised that Cormac should be at the airport by now since his flight would be taking off in an hour.
Entering her office, Meredith slipped out her phone from her lab coat and rang Cormac. Turns out she couldnāt wait until he got back home to talk to him.
āHey, Mer.ā Meredith still couldnāt understand the effect that Cormacās voice had on her. The way it made her feel calm and safe.
āHey. Sorry, I know youāre going to be boarding your flight soon, but I just wanted to hear your voice.ā
āMissing me?ā He teased her, a cockiness in his voice.
Meredith huffed out a breath, āYou know, I could just put this phone down?ā
āAw, come on now. You donāt want to do that; I promise Iāll be on my best behaviour.ā
Scoffing, Meredith walked over to the window, her free hand in her coat pocket. āFat chance of that happening.ā
āIāll have you know that I can behave when I want to, you just bring out the worst in me. Always have and always will.ā
āSo, this is my fault?ā
āOh, completely and utterly.ā He chuckled before softening his tone, āWhat are you up then?ā
āStill at work, this day doesnāt want to end.ā
āAnything exciting happened?ā
āWell, the cafeteria changed the dressing on the salad⦠not sure if I like it or not though.ā
āIām surprised you even went for the salad.ā
Crinkling her nose, Meredith grimaced. āIt wasnāt out of choice; it was one of the only things left.ā
Laughing, Cormac shook his head. āOf course, donāt know why I expected anything else. What are you up to now then?ā
āHiding away in my office. Rounds donāt start for a little while yet and I just wanted to call you.ā
āIt wonāt be long until Iām back.ā
Sighing, Meredith rand a hand through her hair, āItās long enough and knowing my luck, Iāll be pulled into surgery just before itās time to go home.ā
āCould be sooner than you think.ā
Meredith jumped as she felt a kiss placed on her cheek, almost dropping her phone out of her hand. She spun around; a grin painted on her face the minute she saw her boyfriend stood in front of her.
āWhat are you-? I thought- How are you here?ā
Cormac brushed a stay hair out of Meredithās face, āI got an early flight out. There werenāt any other talks I needed to stay around for, so I didnāt see the point of spending any more time away from my family.ā
Meredith would never admit how her heart skipped a beat when he called her and her kidsā part of his family. The momentary shock now gone, Meredith wrapped her arms around Cormacās neck, inhaling the woodsy scent of his cologne.
āIāve missed you so much,ā she mumbled into his shoulder.
āIāve missed you too, bub. You have no idea how much I love you.ā He squeezed her, holding her close.
I was really excited for the Premiere and I have never been so disappointed in my life. It took me a few days to write this review because Iām just so unimpressed. I feel like the only interesting parts of the Season 18 Premiere were the Meredith and Hayes FaceTime call, Levi in that outfit and Jo with that hair, and the interviews. Thatās it. I mean Teddy and Owenās two weddings were interesting if youāre a Teddy and Owen shipper, but I never have been so that didnāt really do anything for me.
The pacing of the episode was super slow and it was just altogether boring. There were also just so many inconsistencies. For example, Teddy and Owen originally planned to get married at the park with just Megan, Farouk, Evelyn, Leo, and Allison which doesnāt make sense because prior to their break up they were talking about planning their dream wedding. Now they finally get married and Richard didnāt even know about it? They asked Megan to fly in, but they didnāt tell their friends at the hospital after they just all attended Maggie and Winstonās wedding two weeks earlier?
Itās also not clear if Meredith knows that they got married which is weird because sheās the main character of the show and was an integral part of Owenās previous two weddings one of which was held at her house. Also, Amelia and Link werenāt there and itās not clear if they even knew about the wedding which is weird because Meredith, Amelia, and Link were all present when Owen proposed to Teddy at Christmas at Meredithās house and they are all co-parenting Leo together.
While I appreciated the shift to a lighter tone and that they chose to have this season exist in a post-COVID alternative universe where we can see the actors faces again without the PPE and return to escapism the Premiere didnāt pack the punch I was expecting. The premieres are usually super shocking and action packed and this one just wasnāt. It was just boring and all of the most interesting stuff happened off camera during the two weeks between the Season 17 Finale and the Season 18 Premiere which is just stupid.
I saw the priest getting hit by one of the cyclists coming a few minutes before it happened based on the promo and the context of the scene and there wasnāt a big shocking event like there usually is. The pace of the Premiere really felt off to me. My friend Amy who I watch with every week described it as the pacing you usually associate with a nice stroll through a moonlit garden. Fine for episode two or three or a connecting episode but not the Premiere. I feel like they really misjudged what fans were looking for and Iām hoping that they do the work and course correct now that the Premiere has aired and the completely dismal fan reaction as come out.
One of the few bright spots for me was the introduction of Peter Gallagher as Dr. David Hamilton. I love him as an actor! Heās great! His recent roles in Grace and Frankie and Zoeyās Extraordinary Playlist were fantastic! I was super excited when I heard he was coming to Greyās. I like Dr. Hamilton so far and Iām interested to see how his relationship with Ellis and Meredith having dreams about her mother following her battle with COVID will play into the story this season. While it would be interesting to see Meredith work in Minnesota temporarily like Cristina did back in Season 9, I donāt want her there permanently. Seattle is as much a character in the show as any of the main characters weāve come to love, and something would be missing for me if she moved.
To be perfectly honest, it doesnāt make much sense to me for Meredith to move to Minnesota permanently when she only knows a few people there. Who would watch her kids? If sheās going to move to me, it makes more sense for her to move to Kansas where Alex is or Switzerland where Cristina is. Her kids have already lost their father and so many other caregivers and Meredith has stuck it out in Seattle for so long after everything thatās happened that her moving to Minnesota for me would be bonkers.
Also, where were her kids in the Premiere? All of the interviews that came out prior to the Premiere talked about how Meredithās focus at the beginning of the season would be on her work and her kids, but they were nowhere to be found in the Premiere and itās not clear whose watching them while Meredith is in Minnesota. The interviews also made it seem like Meredith and Hayes would still be circling each other at the start of the season with quotes about how timing hadnāt been on their side, that they still needed to have an official drink and go out on a date, and that while Meredith wasnāt looking for a relationship one might find her.
That had literally nothing to do with the Premiere we saw whatsoever! The kids were MIA and it turned out that Meredith and Hayes started dating off screen following Maggie and Winstonās wedding and we didnāt get to see ANY of the firsts they talked about so much over the last two seasons. So stupid. The Premiere was a total rip off. I hate that Nick Marsh is back and Iāve never gone from liking a character and an actor to hating them in such a short period of time ever. My God. Iām so pissed off about this. What the hell were they thinking? Why did they think we would want this at all?
Donāt get me wrong, I loved Nick Marsh as a character and Scott Speedmanās portrayal of him when he first showed up in Season 14. I was all ready for him to be Meredithās next great love and I was on board. But then he disappeared and was never heard from again and it was reported that Speedman wanted to take a break from TV for a while so I mourned the loss of what could have been and moved on. I sat through the out of character nonsense that was the DeLuca storyline in the belief that eventually that storyline would end, and Meredith would get a real proper love interest that made sense and would be her post-Derek endgame.
So, I was really excited when they introduced Hayes and I have really come to love his character and his budding relationship with Meredith. I feel like Iāve been waiting forever to finally see them go on a date and I am super pissed off that we didnāt get to see it. I would have loved this storyline with Nick if they had introduced it at any previous point in time, but now after theyāve spent so much time setting up Meredith and Hayes itās just infuriating.
I feel immense rage over how they handled Meredith and Hayes and Meredith and Nickās storylines in the Premiere. Iām so angry. The whole thing just made no sense. That Premiere should never have aired. It never should have gotten past the draft stage. It was that bad. The first date and all of the firsts that come with a new relationship are the most exciting parts of a romantic storyline for me and I love seeing all of that on screen. They hyped Meredith and Hayesā relationship up so much and even had the two of them talk about āfirstsā and dating after death so for their first date to happen off screen along with Austinās panic attacks and bad reaction to his Dad starting to date again is just such a rip off.
I have stuck with this show through thick and thin and for them to reward that loyalty by having the most interesting parts of that storyline happen off screen while showing a bunch of stuff on screen with other characters that they could have just told us about? So ridiculous. I was so excited for this season and now Iām just angry. Iām hoping that they are building to a big mid-season finale where Meredith is going to return to Seattle and by that time Bailey will have helped Hayes out with Austin and the two of them will finally get together on screen but Iām starting to feel like every time I get invested in one of the Meredithās new love interests, they pull the rug out from under me and Iām getting really fed up.
In other news, Iām not too surprised that Megan and Riggs broke up off screen only because Virgin River, which I love, just got picked up for two more seasons and I imagine Martin Henderson is busy filming that and it looks like Megan is going to be around for a while and they had to explain it somehow. I loved Meredith and Riggs together and I hated how they ended that storyline so Iām not sad about them breaking up off screen.
The Premiere also broke my heart over Amelia and Linkās storyline. Itās just so stupid. Itās drama for dramaās sake thatās all it is and itās tired. When did marriage become so important to Link? In the span of a few months, he went from being totally fine with not getting married and checking in with Amelia every few weeks on how she felt to convincing himself that Amelia wanted him to propose so he did so at her sisterās wedding and used her dead brotherās children to do it. Ameliaās right the whole thing was super messed up and manipulative and she was right to say no.
Link decided marriage was important to him and that fostering Luna would be totally fine without ever talking to Amelia. Yes, Amelia should have shared her thoughts with him too, but he also should have paid attention. Now their otherwise healthy relationship is over because she doesnāt want to participate in an archaic ritual that involves signing a contract and exchanging vows? Thatās just stupid. I hope they find a way to work it out and get back together because I really like them as a couple.
I like Dr. Michelle Lin the new Head of Plastic of Surgery that Bailey and Richard are looking to hire. I thought for sure after that photo of the other guy made the rounds on social media that he was going to be the new Head of Plastics, but then he said that he doesnāt do āfreeā and I knew he was out. Iām excited for there to be another female surgeon of colour on the show as the gender and racial balance on the show has been more white and male as of late and I think Greyās is at its best when you have a roughly equal number of women and men and as many different races being represented as possible.
I think it makes the storylines more interesting and authentic and personally gives me more characters that I can identify with. This new doctor seems driven, determined, and could have a potentially interesting dynamic with Richard and Bailey. Sheās also giving me some Cristina Yang vibes and Iām all for that. I love Cristina. Always have. Always will. That being said, Iām a bit confused as to where they are going with Joās storyline as I thought for sure the new Head of Plastics would be a guy and her new love interest. But Bailey did say they still needed to hire a new general surgeon and a new neurosurgeon so maybe one of them will be for her?
I canāt really say that there was anything I loved about the Premiere which is disappointing. Joās parenting hair dye mishap was funny, Leviās outfit cracked me up, and I liked that Bailey agreed to help Hayes out, but thatās about it. The thing I was most excited for coming into this season was Meredith finally being back on her feet and seeing the romantic storyline between her and Hayes finally come to fruition.
Finding out that sheās going to be in Minnesota for the foreseeable future, she and Hayes started dating off screen but had to call it quits because seeing his Dad date someone new caused Austin to have panic attacks, and finding out that Nick Marsh is back? I hated it. I donāt understand how the same person who wrote the Season 16 masterpiece āSnowblindā with that amazing snow scene between Meredith and Hayes wrote the Premiere. I just donāt understand.
I really hope theyāre not going to do a love triangle with Meredith, Hayes, and Nick because that would just be so stupid.
Sheās a forty something award-winning surgeon whoās a widowed single mother of three. Love triangles made sense when she was young intern, but at this point itās just dumb. I also didnāt feel the chemistry this time around between Meredith and Nick like I did the first time. It felt forced and flat. I like Maggie and Winston together, but I didnāt find their storyline in the Premiere particularly engaging. Iām glad that Amelia stayed true to herself, but I hate that Link has decided marriage is the only way forward and that theyāre still fighting.
The only moment that really made me laugh out of the hour was when Jo opened the door and Levi was in that ridiculous outfit. I loved the FaceTime call between Meredith and Hayes, but I hated the context. Honestly, Iām not really excited about any upcoming storyline this season which makes me really sad. Iām usually super positive and hopeful when it comes to this show, but this episode just stomped all over my dreams. All I can hope for now is that they pull a twist and everything I was hoping for happens in the mid-season finale otherwise I donāt think Iām going to like this season very much.

I think levi could help Austin cope with his panic attacks and anxiety.
I think Levi's always had a sorta underlining panic and I wish they would explore it more in depth, I think Levi interacting with Hayes could lead to Levi unknowingly offering some rather perfect yet accidental advice
I would rather see this than see them clickbait another character comeback NOTE TO GREYS: UNLESS IT IS ALEX OR CRISTINA OR DEREK ARIZONA OR CALLIE THAT IS COMING BACK NOBODY CARES! I WOULD RATHER HAVE ADDIE AS THE SURPRISE COMEBACK
āHeyā Meredith smiled, hoping her confusion was evident on her face, as she looked up to see Liam standing in the doorway of her office. Heād not been the person that she was expecting at all āAre you looking for your dad?ā
āNo, heās in surgeryā Liam replied, feeling as awkward as ever around Meredith. He wasnāt sure what it was about his fatherās girlfriend that he didnāt like, what made her someone that heād rather not spend time with but heād promised to make an effort and he always stuck to his promises āI came to see you actuallyā
āOh, alrightā Meredith nodded, gathering the paperwork on her desk into a slightly neater pile, worried about what might have inspired the teen to stop by her office. She had no doubt about the fact it had to be something big. Liam stayed standing in the doorway, bouncing nervously on the balls of his feet until Meredith gestured to the chair across from her "Come in"
āThanksā Liam mumbled, nodding his head once in Meredithās direction. A gesture she couldnāt help but smile at, it was something his father did too when he was nervous and Meredith had always found it to be a rather endearing trait. Silence overcame the pair just like it did whenever they were left alone without Cormacās attempts to start a conversation between them or Austinās incessant chatter to avoid any awkward pauses.
It wasnāt that Meredith didnāt want to talk to Austin, itās just that she didnāt know how to āIs everything okay? I know your dad said you were stopping by after school to wait in his office till he was ready to head home, did he leave it locked I know I have a spare key in here somewhereā¦ā
āNo, I just came from his officeā Liam revealed before Meredith had the chance to start sorting through the various keys held together by an Ireland keyring. One he had seen his father pick up for her on their last trip there, Liam wasnāt sure why exactly it bothered him that not only did Meredith have a keyring from his father but also a key to his office but it did. It got under his skin in the way that only things relating to Meredith seemingly could and he let out a gentle sigh, remembering the fact heād promised not only his father but his brother that heād try to make more of an effort with her. Something Liam was only willing to do as long as Meredith did the dame āLike I said, I came to see youā
"Yeah, sorry" Meredith apologised, hating how frazzled she seemed. It really wasn't helping her quest t convince Liam that she was cool "What's up?"
āI, uh, I need some adviceā Liam stumbled over his words before taking a steadying breath, he had come to Meredith for a reason and it was too important to let his embarrassment force him to back out āThe school is saying itās time to get serious about college applications and I have no idea what I want to beā
āI donāt know what I want to be eitherā Meredith admitted, shrugging her shoulders slightly. Her response clearly catching Liam off guard āI mean I used to think I wanted to be Cheif of Surgery here but now I donāt know if I ever want that and when I was your age? I wanted to be a lawyer?ā
āReally?ā Liam asked, his face scrunching up in disbelief āI thought doctoring was in your blood or somethingā
āDo you think itās in yours?ā
āI donāt know, Iām not the best around blood or sick peopleā Liam shook his head, and Meredith chuckled remembering the stories sheād heard about Liam trying to comfort Austin whenever he was sick or in pain. It never seemed that those moments brought comfort to either of them āI donāt want to be a doctor or a nurse, I would hate itā
āWell, at least we can rule that outā Meredith exclaimed, feeling like they were making progress āWhat are some other things you hate?ā
āMaths and chemistry, so that probably rules out a lot of jobsā Liam replied, realizing what Meredith was doing. Everyone had been telling him to focus on what he liked, what he wanted to do but nobody had thought to help him narrow that down. Nobody but Meredith āI donāt mind art but I couldnāt do it every day like my mom didā¦ā
āSee weāve already ruled out so many things!ā Meredith smiled, glad to see Liamās shoulders sag in relief. Clearly, this problem had been causing him quite a lot of stress, it was the only explanation as to why heād be coming to her for help.
āI like English and history I guessā Liam admitted, sharing a smile with Meredith. Sheād already suspected as much considering his nose always seemed to be buried in some sort of book when she was at her boyfriendās place, she was just glad it was because he liked to read not just because it was a valid excuse to not engage with her āThereās probably some courses I can do with those right?ā
āQuite a lot, Iām guessingā Meredith nodded, smiling when the silence that overcame them didnāt feel as awkward as it usually did. They were making progress āPlus itās not like college is your only option, there are other things that you can do instead but thatās something Iād say you should talk to your dad aboutā
āI will, I think Iāll go back to his office now though. He should be finishing up in a few minutesā Liam nodded, checking the time on his phone. He was glad that he and Meredith had gotten to talk things out a bit, that sheād been able to offer him some guidance, but it didnāt mean he wanted to spend any longer than necessary in her office āCan you not tell my dad about this just yet? I donāt want him knowing I was stressing outā¦ā
āSureā Meredith nodded, both of them knowing it would be hard for her to keep this from Cormac. It was obvious that she wanted to beam about the moment they had just shared, Cormac would likely sense her happiness and question her immediately about it āAs long as you remember that you can come to me any time okay? When you need me, Iām hereā

Prompt: a fluffy merhayes fic of Hayes sweetly convincing Mer to get out of bed in the morning š
Better - Merhayes
For @chachkayes who might need some merhayes tonight. Thank you so much for the prompt...enjoy...
Other than surgery and sex, the other activity that Meredith Grey enjoyed partaking in the most was sleep.
Over the years working at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Meredith had learned how to sleep in a number of places from on-call rooms to the coch in her office no matter what time of the day or night it was. She would snore softly and let herself be revitalised just in time for her next surgery. Some of her colleagues were dependant on caffeine, Meredith was simply dependant on naps.
In recent months, after a long stint of sleeping alone, Meredith had found herself falling asleep at night wrapped in the arms of one Cormac Hayes. A man who claimed to hate cuddling yet always seemed to be the one to initiate it. Wrapped in her boyfriend's arms, Meredith found herself sleeping soundly each night, her dreams being as sweet as the reality that she and Cormac were building together.
All of Meredithās favourite activities seemed to be better than ever once once started doing doing with Cormac, not just sleeping. The surgeries became more enjoyable and the sez became more passionate. He improved her life in every possible way, having even manged to find away to make mornings enjoyable for her.
For as long as she could remember, Meredith had never been a morning person. She hated leaving the comfortable sanctuary that was her bed to face the drab and dreary morning yet Cormac had even managed to find a way to make that better. The first morning that he'd jostled her awake gently only to hand her a cup of coffee before greeting her, Meredith had thought it was just a one off. Something sweet that he'd to ease any awkwardness either of them might have felt have spending their first night together.
However, nearly six months into their relationship Meredith had gotten used to the routine of being woken gently by her boyfriend only to be immediately presented with a steaming mug of coffee as three words fell from his lips...
