Hidden secrets of Yale’s 1491 world map revealed via multispectral imaging

The map, which dates to about 1491 and depicts the Earth’s surface from the Atlantic in the west to Japan in the east, is dotted with descriptions in Latin of various regions and peoples.

Perhaps the most interesting revelations, say the researchers, concern southern Africa. By studying visible river systems and legible place names, Van Duzer had previously determined that Martellus based his depiction of the region on the Egyptus N[MC1] ovelo [BL2] map, which survives in three manuscripts of Ptolemy’s “Geography.” The Egyptus Novelo used geographical data from native Africans, not European explorations. It is thought that the map was based on information shared by three Ethiopian delegates to the Council of Florence in 1441.

The new images show that the Martellus map’s depiction of southern Africa extends further east than the known versions of the Egyptus Novelo do, suggesting that the German cartographer was working from a more complete version of the map that showed the eastern reaches of the continent.

“It’s a seminal and tremendously important document of African mapping by the people of Africa, in this case preserved by a western source,” says Van Duzer.

It has echoes of “Broken Arrow”, “Empty Quiver” and all those other codes for “We had a thermonuclear device here just a minute ago, where is it now?”

The source of Balbriggan cotton was the Smyco mill in, surprise, Balbriggan.

Why the fabric wasn’t called Smycotton I don’t know.

Over the last twenty years they have been working on building a medieval fortress by hand with building methods that would have been used in the 13. century. They expect to be done in about six or seven years

The castle is ‘standardized’ because about a thousand castles were build at the same time by King Phillip II. as a defnece against the english

It already looks beautiful just like that

The even move the stones around on little carriages that have to be moved by two people

Even all the safety structures are made by hand and out of wood (while they are safe just like that, they have to be screwed together as well so they are up to today’s standards)

This will be the highest and most secure tower where the owner would escape to, should the castle be under siege. It has its own water and works mostly independent from the rest of the castle.

These are the wheels used to lift the stones and get them to the top of the wall. They are still moved by people walking inside and the only thing they added was a break so it’s safer otherwise this is a complete reconstruction

The small chapel has the most beautiful window which was made completely by hand and it’s so symmetrical it’s unbelievable

Also there was a little nest of swallows in the chapel which made it extra amazing

The great hall is the only room with very big windows which made the room very lovely and bright. Below the great hall is the storage connected to the kitchen. Above the kitchen behind the great hall is a guest room which would be the warmes room since the cooking fire would be burning below it.

The guest room also had beautiful paintings and the even made the pigment for it themselves

There was so much more and it was so interesting I could have stayed there forever. Anyone who is interested in medieval history and has a chance to go there should definitely do that

“Ok folks so this is a post for some debunking of transphobia related to specifically sports,exercise,working out.

There’s lots of other aspects of transphobia in society generally and there’s lots of further nuance to various issues in society concerning how to best approach some issues but let’s clear up the common bullshit we hear about trans folks, more specifically trans women in sports.

The resources listed here aren’t things I wrote,just collected and laid out. Sadly not all of it uses proper inclusive language all the time but most of it does and  overall we have a lot of useful info here.

What’s this post for?

So that if you are arguing with a transphobic person that’s trying to claim that trans women have some unrealistic unfair advantage in sports you have some specific evidence and resources to counter that.

And just as much for anyone who simply doesn’t understand the science and cultural issues behind it and wants to educate themselves.

It’s ok to not know-society as it is today teaches us a lot of oppressive viewpoints and ideas,and it can be difficult to shake that off,but it is our job to do so to the best of our abilities.And it should not be the burden of those oppressed to keep proving their humanity but on us all to do our best. With that in mind here’s a number of links.

Furthermore there are the often mentioned IOC guidelines used in Olympics which are one of the greatest if not the greatest, biggest sports competition in the world, and can be used as a metric-if one of the most competitive sports environments can be at least somewhat trans inclusive why would it make sense for various other spaces not to?

They are not perfect,I’d argue they are in some ways behind the conclusions of the first article noted here and the other two links after it but they can be used as a guideline alongside the links above if for no other reason than because they are a recognized world wide sports event and can help institutionalize trans inclusiveness in sports where that might otherwise prove to be difficult due to transphobia around us.
