“What if I tipped you extra to make me the grossest pizza you can think of...what would be on it?”

“I mean, I guess I could understand the appeal of wanting to rent a hard copy of a movie,” she shrugged, “but if I can just hop on Vudu and pay $4 to see a movie instead of hunting down the nearest video store.. I gotta say I would rather do that.”

“And I get that, I do. Convenience isn’t what I’m after here. It’s the act of it. Picking out a movie, talking to a clerk for suggestions, getting some Ben n Jerry’s on the way home. It’s all so poetic. And gone now.”

“Three days, you haven’t slept in three days? I think I’m exhausted for you, Joni. I slept 4 hours last night, and I already want to go back to bed. Well, did you at least bring any of this cold brew or am I goin’ to have to make my own caffeine for this run?”

“You won’t need sleep after my cold brew.” Joni presented Janet with a sample of her brew with a wide, slightly unsettling smile on her face. “Come on, get changed. Time waits for no one.”

He looked out as the sun was setting and thought to himself that after doing this nearly every day, he was still so appreciative that he got to see it. “You did a really good job,” he said honestly. “Surprised me, that’s for sure.” The smile he wore told her he was joking. “Here I was thinkin’ I might have to help you up off the ground after fallin’ off or something,” he said. “Next time, gotta get you out here for the sunrise. It’s even better.” It was true, it was a better site but he figured getting Joni here at five in the morning was a little less likely than eight at night so he laughed. 

“I’m still deciding whether or not I’ll throw myself off a horse and have you save me just for the story.” Joni winked. She looked at the setting sun as a sense of calm overcame her, everything out here was still yet full of life. It seemed cinematic, she knew there was no way she could retell the sight of the countryside sunset without sounding cheesy and cliche. “Sunrise? Good luck with that one. That’s like what, 4:30-5:00 because we gotta saddle ‘em up n’ everything? Sorry, we gotta wait til we’re more established before I’m willing to get up that early for you.”

“See, but I think you’re just tryin’ to ignore the gems out there, Joni. Even Dua Lipa alone reignited the pop movement. And a bunch of new Carly Rae Jepsen. And Gaga? Pop music is experiencing a revolution.”

“I mean as far as pop goes Charli XCX graced us with a new album. But honestly, I’ll say Fiona Apple probably won 2020 even over anything that’s been unreleased.”

“See, I just wanna know what your favorite album of the year so far is? There are so many good ones already! 2020 ain’t backin’ down, yet.”

“Feel like 2020 has been a slow year for music, Rory. We’re halfway in and nothing has with resonated with me. Though Neil Young released a new song and that has me hopeful.”

Cara put her guard back up pretty quickly, knowing her company. “How sweet,” she said with heavy sarcasm. 

“Come on Car, you were smiling just a second ago. Why do you insist on being reluctant to talk to me?”

“i think you’re wrong,” she stated, quickly adding, “sorry.” ( @frostfordstart​ )

“Nah that’s understandable.” Joni paused. “I just think that Blockbuster still could be in business today. I think people are always horny for nostalgia. Who cares about all these stupid streaming services. Wouldn’t you pay good money to rent a DVD right now?”

“Now, it is 8:30 in the damn mornin’, pardon my language, but what could you possibly want from me at this hour?”

“I made this cold brew experiment. I brewed it for over 24 hours, now I haven’t slept in three days. I’m making stops at everyone’s houses because my roommate is officially sick of me. So uh, what’s up? Wanna go for a run?”

“Joni, I love you. Thank you for supporting me.” He narrowed his eyes slightly, was she going to give him the same talk he gave her about Tommy? He couldn’t tell. “I already consider myself thicc with two C’s, am I not? Is it cause I have abs?”

“I think you’re a little too muscle-y. You can skip a workout day you know, trade tossin ol’ pig skin for some fried pork rind.” She paused for a moment stealing one of the fries that came with the cheddar biscuits. “Speaking of Anna....Sit with me, Boone. Bring the biscuits.”

Tommy laughed at what she said, like genuinely laughed. “Yeah s’me. Caught,” he said. “Thought she would keep my secret, guess not.” He led them for a few silent seconds. “I do, actually. If I’m still workin’ when the sun’s goin’ down, I’ll try to. M’sure skylines are better in  ton’a others places but it always seemed real nice to me out here.” 

Tommy’s laugh was contagious, she couldn’t help but snort more at his laugh that probably woke up any sleeping creature. The ride was nice, tranquil even. They’d exchange a few sentences here and there, but mostly Joni spent her time split between praying this horse didn’t kick her off, admiring the slowly setting sun, and analyzing the guy before her. Man did he look like an extra scrumptious value meal with complimentary dessert on that horse. They approached a stopping point. She relaxed the reigns she was holding and started a braiding small section the horse’s mane just to have something to do with her nervous hands. “I think I did a pretty decent job. Come on, give me some validation. It’ll help build you a good case when I retell this date to Fiona.”

Joel chuckled. “I try not to come into town too often unless I’m really, really bored.” And he was  really, really bored as of lately. He shrugged at her question. “I don’t have a story, really. Just got hungry and my personal chef was off.” He took a drink of his beer as he continued. “Went to Star Diner and decided a nightcap was the next solution to my boredom problem. Why are you here?”

“Oooo personal chef, alright then guess instant ramen isn’t in your vocabulary.” Joni teased. “Ah well, my schedule’s free. Figured why not pester a rich boy just trying to enjoy his beer in peace?”

“I know the pain of losin’ your first plant baby. Lord, when my grammy finally let me take home some hydrangeas and they died a week later, I was a wreck. But, the best way to grieve is to get back on the horse. There’s no time like the present. Besides, that calathea was a pain in the ass.”

“Alright, fine. Bring Spidey in.” Joni motioned for Annie to come inside with the spider plant she’d already accidentally named. A pathetic name, but still a name that showed she was open to motherhood again. “Can I get you anything? Since you come bearing gifts n’ all?”
