Senior Capstone Experience - Harper Okamoto

What's good all!? This is going to be a small update. These past 2 weeks have been nothing short of stressful. I am still waiting on my internal review for my artwork.

It's coming close to graduation, and I'm seeing that it may not get installed till next year. So now my deliverable has taken a shift, which thankfully I have accounted for, as I will be delivering a smaller deliverable that still holds as much impact as my original.

For the final few weeks, it will be me gathering all of my assets and making a final presentation that shows my creative process and, in the end, shows what I was able to accomplish!.

What’s good, all? This is going to be a small update from me. 

These past 2 weeks have been all about tweaks for my mural, according to COCA (refer to the last post for an explanation).  This revision hopefully addresses their points.

For clarity, Black = glass panel, and White = vinyl.

-Create a type of visual flare and use some negative space between the glass and vinyl.

-Make design motifs more defined instead of leaning mostly abstract.

-Pull back on the size of the pueo's wings to give room for the quilt pattern to make the whole artwork more connected instead of separated.

These next 2 weeks will be in the fields of production, as i work to get these files cut into the vinyl with Signs Today (My chosen vinyl company). 

No hurdles at the moment; I’m feeling pretty good about this project as a whole.

Currently I am on track with things for production. Stage, but the end of this stage is drawing closer.

Update:

Heyo all! This update is a big one but a short one at the same time.

The past 2 weeks I have been working to get my murals vectorized in Adobe Illustrator. I have also been working on my update presentation to MOCA Hawaii (Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts) and COCA Hawaii (Commission of Culture and the arts). 

These recent weeks I had attended a meeting along with others who are assisting me in my project for moral support. Safe to say That I got approval to move forward with installing my mural, but with a few minor updates.

So that is now the plan for the next 2 weeks: Revisions, and getting in touch with Signs Today Hawaii for a quote on vinyl printing costs and seeing if they're willing to help out with my project.

Only hurdle with this is that I’ll need to put my vectorizing on hold as i make way for the revisions and, in the end, will have to vectorize that one. Which is a bummer, as the first one took me a while, but I’m just glad I got approval.

I am on time with my schedule; production is now in full swing with this approval done.

UPDATE:

Heyo all! Things are rolling along; let’s see what's been going on since the last update.

I’ve been at work bringing my sketch design up to scale, and it is a massive difference haha. With my current measurements, I will need to go back and readjust my design so it can fit proportionately. 

In terms of design approval from COCA (Commission on Culture and the Arts), I have a short meeting schedule, so now I will be creating a short presentation to present for approval. Should take less than 5 minutes to present.

Currently no hiccups or road bumps. And the next 2 weeks will be to continue to bring the rest of my design up to scale and get ready for my presentation to COCA.

From top to bottom are my layout measurements, plus some mock-ups of what is to happen.

Update: What's good all! since the last update, I've been really busy physically by heading back to the site to gather some measurements of all the glass panels I intend to place my mural on. and have laid it all out. Here are some mock-ups for you guys to get a visual understanding of what I want to do.

The next 2 weeks, I will continue to work on bringing my designs up to scale and making any refinements needed. I'll also have a conversation with my professor, helping me get in contact with SIGNSTODAY (preferably), for the vinyl printing situation. I know West Oahu has worked with them in the past for vinyl installations before.

Luckily, so far there have been no major setbacks to my project. I'm still awaiting approval from COCA. One hurdle I see is with my measurements. since I'm using an AR ruler, naturally some of the bigger panels may not be as accurate, but I'll be okay if I can get them close enough.

I am still ahead of schedule in the production phase, which does allow for a lot of fallback room if I should need it. Bringing my design into illustrator and upscaling will take some time.

Update:

Heyo all, let's see what ive been up to… since the start of the semester, I’ve been developing draft designs for my mural design and collecting ground site photos for my mock-ups. As of now I have done some major revision that I feel is more me.

Upcoming 2 weeks are flexible, but it should be getting the approval for my design and installation at the station. In the meantime, I’ll be working on getting more accurate measurements for my template and bringing my design up to accurate scale as much as possible.

Good thing is that there are no setbacks. One hurdle was my revisions; my original designs were good, but it all felt very plain, stiff, and uncohesive. But it was such a breakthrough when I finally made my new design, which I feel is more expressive and dynamic. I am definitely more proud of the version.

The design aspect I am ahead of the track with my project schedule, which keeps me on track with the meetings aspect of talking with my other professors helping me with this project and also getting in contact with vinyl print companies. I know those will take some time.
