Marveling at this trunk that contains the cosmos, like the mind
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And I beheld her before me, Her essence, a hazy scarlet-tinted light. Her serpentine limbs stretched around me, through me, Adorned in thorns dripping crimson tears of poison morphing into petals of light.
Worlds in Wood Ancient redwood roots

Campaign Melodrama: As The World Burns
Kurt Cobb - October 23, 2016
In the melodrama that passes for the U.S. presidential campaign, Donald Trump got practically all the post-debate headlines last week when he hedged on whether he would accept the outcome of the upcoming presidential election. But for those most concerned about genuine sustainability, what both candidates agreed on should be far more troubling. And yet, it elicits nothing more than a yawn these days in political discourse.
The candidates agreed that the U.S. economy needs to grow more rapidly. What they argued over is whose economic plan will make it grow faster. The push for economic growth has become sacrosanct in modern political discourse. Growth is the elixir that heals all social and economic divisions and makes possible the solidarity that comes from the feeling that the path to wealth is open to everyone.
For the vast majority of people on the planet that path was never really open. And, since the so-called Great Recession, it has been closed off completely for all but those at the top of the income scale.

A hard pill to swallow but we must. We need to rethink our idea of "the good life", start finding social solutions in a post-growth economy (for more on this read Tim Jackson's "Prosperity Without Growth"), and for God's sake curb the population of our species (I know, this is a wildly unpopular thing to say).
⠀⠀⠀ "The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up, as if orchards were dying high in space. Each leaf falls as if it were motioning "no." ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ And tonight the heavy earth is falling away from all other stars in the loneliness. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ We're all falling. This hand here is falling. And look at the other one. It's in them all. ⠀⠀⠀ And yet there is Someone, whose hands infinitely calm, holding up all this falling." ⠀⠀⠀ #Rilke
Almost died in this canyon
Visiting this Old Pearl River swamp I spied 800 year-old cypress trees, tupelos, gators, coons, hogs, herons, and some off-the-grid homosapians. The people living here have put up shacks accessible only by boat. They are from diverse backgrounds yet are sharing folks, evidenced by their "Cajun Refrigerators" - a mesh cage where they put extra fish from their catch for the neighbors. But the hogs here, an invasive, are more akin to humans elsewhere on the planet... Very intelligent, overpopulated, and they think nothing of destroying anything in their path for what they want, uprooting entire trees to get to a nest of insects.

"We are at a moment where, in lots of different ways, borders are hardening... And I think we need to be reminded that for a large part of our ancient past those borders didn't really exist; that actually, if there was a border, the thing to do was cross it."

If we can, for a moment, look past what we believe and closely examine why and how we believe it, two significant things can happen: 1) We see that people with seemingly polar opposite views are not so different at all. 2) We may end up overturning the beliefs we held so close if we recognize they were established on unstable ground
Viator et Satyrus The Satyr took pity on a traveller who was overwhelmed by snow and laid low by ice, and led the man into his cave. As the man warmed his hands by blowing on them with his mouth, the satyr asked why he did this, and the man said, "To warm them." Then when they sat down to dinner, the traveller blew on his porridge. Asked why he did this, he said, "To cool it." Then straightaway the Satyr threw the traveller out, saying, "I don't want you to be in my cave, since your mouth goes this way and that way." -Avianus

"When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind." #jiddukrishnamurti
