Rewatched 3.33
…People hated this movie?
On my rewatch of all the mainline Evangelion stuff, and just finished 2.22.
I’ve not watched the rebuilds in years, and I realised I’d never actually seen the post credits preview before.
And…
Why am I mourning a movie that never came to be?
Now the rebuilds aren’t my favourite thing ever (they’re alright, just nothing on the 90s series for me personally - 3.33 is my favourite of the 4), but this actually looks so cool.
I finally watched the End of Evangelion movie.
And it basically drives home what I felt about the 26ep anime. This franchise is not about mechs or cool fights or religion, it's about the most insane psychological abuse children can go through at the hands of terrible adults but like... in a surrealist scifi setting. It's honesty in the same genre as Utena imo. Evangelion about the self-hatred felt by lonely people. It's about pain and trauma and an inability to connect.
It fucking hurts watching Shinji, Asuka, and Rei being used as pawns and getting treated like dirt for daring to need unconditional platonic love. I was furious with how Misato would yell at Shinji for having anxiety or fear or any emotion he's "not supposed to have". He's 14!!! He's gonna cry when he's scared!!! That's normal child behavior!!!
At the same time, I see why Shinji is viewed poorly by the fandom now, but omg he doesn't exist in a vacuum. He was doomed to turn out wrong from the start. Same with Asuka and Rei. None of them even had a chance. Seeing Shinji turn all of his self hatred into violence against the women around him made me sick, 10/10 peak existential horror. Watching Misato groom and manipulate the Eva pilots whilst trying to maintain a "I'm just trying to help you" mask, 10/10 peak psychological horror. Man I feel bad for all the kids. Like Shinji is no angel (haha angel) but it can't be overstated how every single adult in his life fucked him over and his peers were just as abused as he was so they couldn't be a source of comfort to each other at all. Poor Asuka got stuck with two of the most mentally ill teammates on Earth (one of which, isn't human???) and none of the adults in her life attempted to bond with her or get to the root of her anger. And then there's Rei... Everything about that girl is unfortunate. Shinji's dad really made her just to groom her into being/helping him reunite with his wife. Fucking evil.
Anyway, I'm just rambling. I liked the movie and I'm glad i didn't watch it as a teen because I wouldn't have understood any of it. The movie was really pretty. Fucking amazing music and color design. I have a big fondness for surrealism and psychological nonsense in film so even when It got weird I was like "Yeah, ok, I guess this is happening :)"
Final note: Whatever Kaworu and Shinji have is v v gay. Like astronomically gay. Not even subtext, just text.
This review/analysis is everything.
I’ve almost done with my rewatch of the original show (before I move onto the rebuilds), and it is sooo much better than the first time I watched it as a teen. It never really hit me as a kid just how messed up the 14-year-old pilot system was, and just how much these adults failed them. Even Misato, despite her care for Shinji and Asuka, can only see them as pilots first and children second - hence her treatment of Shinji as a “man” (without even getting into the direct sexual abuse in EoE). She’s an amazing character, but also a terrible person. Kaji too - even if he’s more mature in his handling of Asuka, he does manipulate her crush when she refuses to pilot (“I was so looking forward to seeing you in action”).
Though Shinji’s mindset and treatment of women in End of Eva is utterly despicable, but you’re right it wasn’t born in a vacuum. He’s constantly torn between joy and despair in the series, which in the film’s case unfortunately results in selfish apathy. Something I really noted (sadly) on my rewatch, was his complete shift in attitude in the episodes following when Gendou praised him. Despite his hatred for his father, acknowledgement is all he’s ever wanted - he’s a lot more like Asuka than he thinks.
Rei is a character I’ve appreciated much more on my rewatch. It’s so clear her personality is a product of the environment she’s been raised in - one she’s never been able to leave. Thinking back to End of Eva (though I haven’t got to it again yet), she only leaves Gendou by devoting her will to another Ikari - devotion is all she’s ever had in her isolation for the sake of Gendou’s plans.
Asuka has always been blorbo of mine, and only became even more so on my rewatch. Seeing her beg for attention in Magma Diver (comedic as is portrayed then) means so much more when you have the whole picture of her character.
It is such a great show. A painful one. But great.
Ranulf for #FEModernPulse !!!
He's tired of dealing with everyone, esp. Skrimir.
Seeing fantastic art of Ranulf always brings me such joy 🩵

the best female characters are the ones that online discourse calls annoying and cannot stand. this is a fact sorry. the more hated she is by the online sphere the better her character is sorry
Asuka, get behind me
"It's just a quote from a book."
The quote:
“If I could, I would have you use me as your stepping stone, the bridge you take apart after crossing, the bones you need to trample on your climb, the sinner who endures the agony of a million knives. But I know you won’t allow it.”
By far my favourite line in the entire novel.
Which Fire Emblem game would make the best movie adaptation, and why is it the Sacred Stones?
I remember last year when I first played Apollo Justice
I booted up the game for the first time on a plane, thinking to myself "I'll give it a go, but I bet I won't get as invested as I was in the original trilogy."
Only for Apollo Justice to become my favourite game in the franchise...
Trucy, Kristoph, Klavier and Apollo flooded my Top 5 characters (Franziska still holds her spot at least). And Beanix somehow became (perhaps) my favourite era of Phoenix's character. (Though I still wish we got some interaction between him and Maya in this stage of the timeline). Love the development of Ema too.
It ain't perfect, but I adore the overarching narrative of the game.
Krisnix divorce, you will always be famous.
WISE WORDS, USAGI

My Once Upon A Time - a Sailor Moon lyric parody
Basically, I've rewritten the lyrics to this song from the perspective of Usagi in the last 2 episodes of Season 1 (I recommend listening along to the song for the rhythm if you don't know it - My Once Upon a Time, from Descendants 3).
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR EPISODES 45 and 46 OF CLASSIC SAILOR MOON SEASON 1
