Hansel psychologically is highly empathetic to other people besides himself, selfless to the point of what most would call suicidal but still pulling it off. He has low emotional/mental response to the traumas enforced on him during the Trials leading them to be very... ineffective/useless. Just acting as tests every time on Hansel's survival and intelligence. Which is unsurprisingly very high. Despite this, he is still a very mentally flawed person, and this perfectionism/emotional absence is seen through the veil of Easterman's perspective of him, which Hansel calls out. Because it helps Easterman justify everything horrible he is doing to Hansel and has done to him is fine because it isn't 'hurting' him. I would honestly say this perfectionism is just a defense mechanism on Hansel's part.

Hansel's strong convictions lie in the injustices continuing and being employed by Murkoff in Sinyala against the helpless/forgotten. That everything MUST be exposed and everyone employed under this system is guilty of horrible crimes/liable to all within it. And to help reagents escape Sinyala/prolong their continued life in the hell of the facility. He does not want anyone to die to Murkoff. And will put out his own neck for them because he can.

They have a push/pull dynamic that never turns off at both sides. Except instead of both of them switching between pushing and pulling they are doing the exact same thing. One pushes, the other pushes. One pulls, the other pulls at the exact same time. However, in this, Easterman is the one that started this dynamic and has the power here. Hansel has none and is the one heavily impacted by it.

Easterman misses Irene dearly and tries to seek out the closest to her which unlucky for Hansel as a lot of him aligns to her but not enough where they are basically the same person. And if Easterman was looking for the exact same person he wouldn't be attracted to Hansel in the first place. Easterman wants someone who can make him feel 'better' and in working order, take care of him. Normalcy in his usually chaotic life. And given his mental deterioration wants absolutely anything to make him feel better. Hansel makes Easterman engaged, hyperfocused, and most of all obsessed. Hansel is everything that goes against Murkoff and Easterman yet is also the most smartest person Easterman has ever met. He sees Hansel as an equal, though the definition of equal is heavily skewed here. Hansel quells his loneliness, and gives a point that he can point his heart to. Hansel is obsessed with taking down Easterman, and Easterman is obsessed with keeping the man to himself. He wants Hansel to actually like him, he WANTS Hansel. He doesn't want Hansel to die, because that would be a waste, instead of admitting to himself his true affections which are pointedly obvious. Easterman is fiercely protective of Hansel, in the excuse of protecting an important asset. I think Hansel would be put into a trial with a dummy bomb to his chest and everyone else has real bombs. They are both very manipulative people and good at hiding their intentions. It's just inevitable once the pulling or pushing lands them both in the same spot. And all is revealed. *cough cough* Sinyala Escape Event.
