Can we just all agree that the draft of Tagah's fight against the gaang that didn't make it into the movie is actually what happened and the movie just showed a slightly wrong summary that idk Aang imagined after the others told him what happened? Because I actually need it to be canon so bad.
Katara actually kicking ass and being very much prepared to abandon the Aang way and take him out out?
Sokka rushing in front of Katara and actually dealing some damage?
Toph being as badass as she's always been admittedly but it's pretty cool that Tagah apparently looked at her and decided "yup, this one has to go." And then her just. Dying, like that. And the way the others stopped in their tracks to just stare because, hoo boy. Hoo boy. Process that in the middle of a fight, huh? After all they did and survived, at times unscathed, and it's Toph, of all people, who goes first. Toph! Literally undefeatable, strongest earthbender eveeer Toph? Christ.
And then Zuko just getting absolutely decimated, with the choke slam hand falling limp scene? That he couldn't even try to defend himself hits as hard as Toph being the first to go, imo. His fire did nothing, and after Tagah told Aang all about how fire can only burn.
I also love that the others always have time to actually see and realize that they lost one of theirs. Katara crying is so valid, jfc. If this actually made it into the movie I think a lot more people would have cried. They never had to face something like this before, not for anyone but Aang, I suppose. They don't even get a moment to process what this means before being forced to fight again, which might be for the best.
And possibly my favorite changes, the fact Tagah bypasses Sokka at first to push back Katara bc he sees her as the bigger threat, Katara being helped by Momo (a crime that we didn't get this), and then!! Katara being forced to watch her brother die.
I seriously need to talk to whoever decided to cut this out.
No seriously, after losing Toph and Zuko and then being forced to see Sokka get killed, apparently slower than the others too considering Tagah's just holding him up, wow. The eye contact. You know he was telling her to get herself out of this. And then she still can't do anything.
Also, it's such a neat tie-in that she gets thrown into the ocean, it brings in the whole healing thing much more easily! It's also way more devastating after seeing all of that to realize Katara clawed her way out of death's depths to drag the others back too. She must have been scrambling to get to them and devastated and absolutely desperate, to know they're dead but to still try, because maybe. Maybe.
Long story short, I'm so glad we got to see this because it was brutal but frankly needed, if you're gonna mention that our protagonists literally died in this scene.
The only detail I liked more about the version we got is the added teamwork - specifically Sokka getting boosted by the others. Idk, I think it said a lot about how often they've fought together without needing to be mentioned. Buuuut it was kinda ruined by the fact it went by so quickly and the attacks seemed extremely weak considering Tagah just kinda... dodged.
I'm glad we got to see the draft.
