Hit me right in my heart.
Illustration for “The Adventure of the Three Students” (anonymous artist), Four Sherlock Holmes Stories, Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1970.
“Historically, whenever women [especially young women] are interested in a form of media, we like to tell them it is bad for them and that they are bad for liking it — unless the media goes mainstream, in which case it becomes no longer feminine and hence okay. Novels are dangerous and cause insanity, until they become classics worthy of being studied in college. Beatlemania is the province of ‘the dull, the idle, the failures,’ until the Beatles become a band that everyone loves. Women are so attacked for loving the media they love that it is a radical act for a woman to love something unashamedly. And transformative fandom is the most radical act of all, because it reverses that ‘lady thing to respectable thing’ process. It takes a piece of media that may not have been designed for women and makes it for women.”

Holmes really was like “the worst thing watson ever did to me was get married to someone who was not me” hello????
And in sign of four when Watson tells Holmes that he and Mary are engaged holmes is like “well at least I have cocaine still” what the fuck that’s literally crushingly sad

some of my favorite pics of victorians:
like... idk i just like photos that remind me that people have continually been people. and that there is a shocking amount of portraits from that era that are incredibly well preserved, some of which look almost modern.
Holmes is a bit on edge in ‘The Final Problem’ and briefly takes refuge in Watson’s kitchen. Being chased by assassins will do that to a man.
I got a Holmes theory: Since The Gay was not socially accepted in (was it victorian era? I think it was) and Homes never talks about his parents, only his brother, my theory is that Mycroft taught Sherlock the observation and deduction thing to keep himself safe. What do you think? I mean it's not really that great, but I came up with it, and also found a fic that used it.
I really like this idea I think it’s fascinating! I’m probably going to spend the rest of the day thinking about it
Oh I've read something along those lines in another fic too!
So if you want another suckerpunch to the chest re: holmes' early life and the dangers of being a gay man in the victorian era, please consider: why should a chemistry student with little to no interest in sociality go out of his way to learn that many different self-defence/fighting techniques?
@two-nipples-maybe-more yes! It was Notes On a Love Story! I am a complete fool for Good Big Brother Mycroft ever since I read that bit where he drives Watson to the train station himself, dressed as a cabbie, to dodge Moriarty. Mycroft is fantastic.
there is no usual in this case

FIC PLEEEEASE!!!
… the address
I found the shop in a 1895 directory (I searched for an earlier one but that was the first that came up) just to see what else was in that area. They’re between about a million photographers and dressmakers. I don’t know what the general distribution of commerce was in London at that time, but I love the thought of Holmes and Watson strolling down the street window shopping.
