One Holiday
The bell dinged above her head as she walked into the music store. Her hands dusting over the shelves. Claire tried her best to make it look like she was actually interested in the instruments. She'd be lucky if she could remember playing a single song on the old piano at her grandmother's house. Cringing at the thought of being around family again. That being the whole reason she had came here in the first place. She knew she should be in her dorm studying.
Putting her foot in her mouth on her lastest phone call from home a few nights before had changed all of that for her. She had been tired of hesring about how well off everyone else in her family was in the relationship department. Blurting out that she did have someone romantically in her life now.
That being a complete lie. She was twenty-three years old and completely alone, working a job at a grocery store and trying to complete her degree. All of that left so little time for someone to find interest in her.
Her head smacked against the one shelf as she looked at the variety of guitar picks. Trying to keep an eye on the front counter for when the person she came here to see would be done with the only other customer in the store. A sweet looking older man she waved hello too as he walked out the door. She grabbed one of the picks at random and made her way to the counter.
Trying to make herself calm down, she leaned against the counter off to the side in case any one else came in and needed his attention. Laying the item on the glass top between them. She knew John was a good guy from the classes they had ended up having together.
"What are your plans for the holiday break?" she asked, trying too seem like she was just making casual conversation between classmates.

Swearing under his breath john was grumbling after he was made to haul off the heavy music equipment under his arms as the newest shipments came, short staffed after one of his mates had decided to have one drink to many and he was forced to cover his mates shift and work the long hours. He didnât mind though. He loved music, writing a bit of his own when he wasnât in class studying and up saving for his own upgrades.Â
It was close to Christmas; over-time was a necessity and he was only barely able to make time between both work and school. In that time, he had afforded half of the new guitar he had on reserve thanks to his manger but he knew he had a way to go before he was finally able make up for the rest.
He signed. the pain and sweat was well worth it he told himself making his way from the backroom and walking back to the front where there were one or two mingling customers and picked up one of the guitars that he had placed behind the counter; needing a re-string before it was placed for display.Â
John was nearly done after a few minutes of tinkering, snipping off the ends of the strings after they were perfectly tuned. He played some scales, making sure they sounded perfect before setting it back down.Â
A voice interrupted his focus, turning back to see a girl he remembered from one of his classes and only did so because he had mentally thought that she had the height of a hobbit from one of his favourite books. Of course, he was nice enough not to tell her that. They were friends, not the best â not the drinking and partying kinds but they got on well with each other whenever they were paired to work together.Â
âWhy do I not the sound of that question?â he said suspiciously, putting his hands in his pockets with a raised brow. She wasnât usually the type to be found in a shop like this. As far as he knew she lived in the libraries. John knew it wasnât anything to do with class they had just announced break from studies earlier that week.Â
