In alchemy, the Ouroboros symbolizes the perpetual cycle of transformation and renewal. It reflects dualities such as creation and destruction, or chaos and order, as parts of a whole. The earliest known depiction of the Ouroboros comes from ancient Egyptian funerary texts called the Enigmatic Book of the Netherworld (around 1600 BCE). Here, it symbolized the cyclical nature of time and the unification of Ra (the son god) with Osiris (the god of the afterlife). In medieval alchemy, the Ouroboros represented the philosopher’s stone, a mythical substance that could grant immortality or transform base metals into gold. It symbolized the never-ending process of refinement and transformation. The Ouroboros also inspired scientific thought: DNA Structure: The cyclic nature of the Ouroboros mirrors the double-helix structure of DNA. Benzene Ring: Chemist Friedrich August Kekulé famously dreamed of a snake eating its tail, which led to his discovery of the benzene ring’s structure. The Ouroboros is a timeless and versatile symbol that transcends cultures, disciplines, and eras. From ancient mythology and alchemy to modern science and philosophy, it represents the eternal cycle of life, death, and renewal.
