i think renee's cross necklace has some really good symbolism.
renee gives her necklace to jean because she has faith in him. she believes that he will learn to heal and be happy. she's come from darkness like he has and she knows that he is strong enough to find his place in the light. she shares this positivity in her life with him, hoping it will help but she can't do much else from across the country
jean accidentally breaks the chain after the interview, where he's reminded of his family and what happened to elodie. the borrowed source of strength isn't enough to protect him from the overwhelming grief. why should anyone have faith in him, when elodie should be the one alive?
cat untangles laila's necklaces looking for a replacement chain as they listen to jean and kevin talk and untangle jean's past. and yet, they don't waver in their support. laila comments that it's something difficult to talk about. cat even apologizes for prying with everything else that was laid bare.
after cat hooks it together she says the chain is longer, it's lower, it's closer to his heart. it will hold up the cross and support renee's faith in jean, as cat and laila will support him.
renee believes in jean but laila and cat will the ones to hold him up.
