Add Magic To Taste aesthetics 19/20: In Like Flynn by Jo Mathieson @jmathieson-fic
Add Magic To Taste is the debut publication from @duckprintspress, an anthology of 20 spell-binding (and scrumptious!) heart-warming queer stories.
This is so awesome, thank you!!! Here is the art of Flynn I comissioned from an artist friend of mine:

How to hide tags (and be warned of works that contains those tags)
So, Ao3 has made a lot of changes lately that allowed us to hide specific fics and works by specific authors.
There still no way to hide works with specific tags (that doesnāt mean there wonāt be in the future, but I have no idea if that is in the plans or not) unless you use the filters in your search. But while you can bookmark a search with all the filters, thereās no way to carry these filters in separate searches and you have to write it every time.
Unfortunately CSS doesnāt have a way either to hide those fics either, at most it can hide the single tag, which we donāt want to do because at that point everything becomes so much worse, as you donāt even have the tag as a warning.
I have an option:
It hides the tags so I do not have to read them and it warns me that this is definitely a work I donāt want to read.
Because those black black boxes are very visible in a wall of tags.
(you can use white if you are using darkmode btw)
It can:
be used in conjunction with all the other hiding skins you have, you can either copy/paste it in the bottom or make a new skin and add the other one as a parent.
be used for dark mode, you just change the āblackā in white in the text
You can also do something midway, if you donāt need to obliterate the tag, just highligh it.
Thereās no way to see what it is once you click on it though! (you either copy and paste the tag somewhere or read the address bar)
you can also do a mix of those, blacken out some tags and highligh others
The code is very simple and straightforward:
a.tag[href*=āwordā] {
background-color: black;
color: black;
}
You change the āwordā in the first line in whatever tag you want to hide, but be careful of these things:
It is case sensitive. so āskinā wonāt catch āSkinā, if thereās something that you aggressively donāt want to see youāll need to copy/paste the code for all the instances.
it will search even part of the word. so ātickā will catch āticketā ātickingā āticklingā āticksā (if you see that thereās a specific word that keeps getting stuck in the filter you can add the same code AFTER, and change the colors in something thatās readable, so like, the background-color: white)
you can hide as many tags as you want, just copy/paste the code again and again and change the āwordā to what you want to hide next
It refers to the url, not the name of the tag, so this part here in the address bar:
which means if you need to use more than one word you canāt use the space but youāll need to use %20 instead.
example:
a.tag[href*=ātwo%20wordsā] {
background-color: black;
color: black;
}
To change the colors
the two lines of code:
this one changes the background: ābackground-color: black;ā
while this other one changes the text: ācolor: black;ā
You can change āblackā in whatever color you prefer using a hex color code (just google ācolor pickerā) or one of the html names for colors (so, white, grey, red will all work fine). for example: ābackground-color: #e6a4ea;ā will give the example in the image above, the pink highlighted one.
Always remember the semicolon at the end of the line!
As I said, you can use both.
Obviously not on the same tags but you can use the black one on tags, and the highlight on others. for example:
a.tag[href*=āangstā] {
background-color: black;
color: black;
}
a.tag[href*=āfluffā] {
background-color: #e6a4ea;
color: black;
}
So, you can use the black thing for really hard limits that you NEVER want to touch and the highlighted ones for tags you might want to have a warning in advance most of the time.
Thatās it. I know itās finnicky, but it can be helpful to people.
oh! cool! thank you @greenarmadilloetteā I didnāt know that!!
Copying pasting the comment in the image:
Add an āiā to make the word non-case sensitive. a.tag[href*=āwhatever%20tagā i] Add a slash to make the it only apply to the first word of the tag (ā/wordā will get āword vomitā but not ānew wordā) a.tag[href*=ā/whatever%20tagā i]

The Masquerade Commences on January 31st, 2022
Welcome to Duck Prints Press LLCās newest project: a pair of anthologies which share the same theme, but feature different kinds of relationships. For these anthologies, we seek pitches for stories featuring masquerades - the more unusual, the better!
She Wears the Midnight Crown and He Bears the Cape of Stars will each be collections of eighteen 6,000-word stories. She Wears the Midnight Crown will feature wlw relationships; He Bears the Cape of Stars will feature mlm relationships. Genderqueerness and polyamory welcome! Where do you come in? You tell us! We want to know how you think those relationships unfold at an unusual or trope-subverting masquerade.
For these projects, weāre seeking 20 fanfiction authors who have not published their work with the Press before and who are interested in making the transition to publishing their original work! (The 16 remaining spots are reserved for authors who have previously worked with us.) New applicants must have published fanfiction, and must want to write an original story, aligned with our theme, of up to 6,000 words in length, at a minimum pay of 1 cent US per word - and with a maximum earning potential of up to 8 cents per word, depending on how our crowd funding goes. And, in case you didnāt knowā¦our first crowd-sourced project, Add Magic to Taste? Successfully funded and earned enough to pay authors the maximum. This is a great opportunity for fanfiction writers who aspire to transition to writing professionally to get some experience, build a resume, and see their work in print!
This post is not a call for story submissions. Like a fandom zine, weāre asking prospective authors to submit writing samples and brief story pitches. Weāll select authors based on these samples and pitches. You must write and post fanfiction to apply to these anthologies, but all stories in She Wears the Midnight Crown and He Bears the Cape of Stars will be 100% original!
Want to be one of the selected authors? Now is your chance! Learn more about this project:

I published with Duck Prints Press this year (Add Magic To Taste, an anthology of magically queer fluffy romances, is available now as an ebook!) This is a great opportunity for fanfic writers who want to write original fic as well!
Everyone wants you to go the extra mile, but no one gives you the gas to do it.

god seeing people afraid to id as ace/aro because "what if it is just a phase? what if it is just hormones? what if it is just mental illness? what if I do find "the right person?"" makes me so righteously angry because I promise you, I promise no one in the community is going to revoke your aspec card on account of hypotheticals. if someone told you that then the stupid motherfucker lied to you. you do not look at water and go "well I'm not sure if I should drink this, because if the temperature drops below zero, it'll turn to ice." relax. let yourself just be. drink the water if you're thirsty. because it's water right now. doesn't matter if it'll be ice by tomorrow, or mist by next tuesday. it's water and you can drink it if you want to.
IMO this is part of why "queer" is an important label; it leaves room for nuance and exploration. It leave room for the possibility of change.
I'm asexual. I'm 99% certain I am, anyway. But I've also noticed A Lot of changes since I came out and again throughout my transition.
My first therapist warned me about getting fixed in an identity and the need to be able to let go of them when they no longer work. He was right.
Maybe it is a phase, but that's okay - life is a series of phases. There's no such thing as a permanent state of being.
So you want a *different* book about magic schools...
Carry On is an obvious choice if you are a big fan of *certain* magical school chosen one stories but really want something new. Its gay, it subverts tropes, it's fun.
The OG! Wizard of Earthsea is really the grandfather of the wizard-school idea. Ursula K LeGuin is one of the best fantasy writers of the last century. Start here and follow the series as it grows and evolves.
Equal Rites- how could I not recommend a Discworld book? Many Discworld books take place in the Unseen University, but this is the first, and Esk is an amazing protagonist.
Lobizona- girls are witches, boys are werewolves...except that this girl is a werewolf too. Very fun world building, and a great example of bringing latinx influence into this well worn fantasy trope.
The Lightning Thief- ok, its summer camp for demigods, not school for magicians. But the vibes are going to feel very familiar for fans of he who shall not be named, the series only gets better as it goes, and the fandom rocks.
The Fifth Season- the darkest and certainly most adult suggestion here. NOT a YA rec. But incredible world building. Tragic and fascinating and powerful. Jemisin really is one of the front runners in fantasy, especially Black fantasy, right now.
Adding this one:
More of a āmanual for magicā than a magic school, but an awesome start to a wonderful series which has a vibrant fandom!

This is hilarious. And sad. But hilarious.
this took me far too long to learn, so Iām going to tell you something that you need to internalise.
you donāt have to tell people anything you donāt want to tell them. itās not rude or disrespectful to be private about things. you donāt owe anyone that information, so how could it be wrong to withhold it?
queer but donāt want to come out? donāt!
have a trauma disorder but donāt want to tell people what your trauma was? donāt!
disabled but donāt want to talk about it? thatās right, simply do not!
practice telling people to go away when they ask invasive questions.
the responses Iāve been using in particular are āthatās between me and my therapist/doctorā, and āwhy does it matter to you?ā
you donāt need a āreasonā to want to keep things to yourself. you donāt need to tell someone your entire history so that they can label you as āvalidā.
donāt tell people information you donāt want to share.
"I'm surprised you feel comfortable asking that question."
Itās that time of the year again :)

Picard:
Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful.
And since weāve no place to go,
Make it so! Make it so! Make it so!
Now, it doesnāt show signs of stopping,
And Iāve brought some tea earl grey hot.
The lights are turned way down low,
Make it so! Make it so! Make it so!
When we finally kiss goodnight,
Riker: How Iāll hate going out in the storm!
Picard: But, if you
Wesley: really?
Picard: Shut up, Wesley!
All the way home Iāll be
Beverly: warm.
Deanna: Oh, the fire is
Beverly: slowly dying,
And my dear,
Worf: weāre still goodbye-ing.
Geordi: But, as long as you
Data: love me so,
Geordi: Make it so!
Data: Make it so!
Riker: Make it so!]
