My Thoughts on Media

Ok, so here’s my issue with Aang. Long story short, Bryke fumbled the Buddhist enlightenment metaphor set up by the guru episode. Buddhism says there are two types of love: attachment and non attachment. The former is selfish and takes, the later gives and is selfless. Bryke seem to think non attachment means no love or emotions allowed, and that’s just not true, at least according to other Buddhists I’ve met. Aang, as stated in the guru episode, uses his crush on Katara to fill the void in his heart left by his ppl’s death. While understandable, he needs to mature his feelings for Katara in order to unlock the avatar state and date her. He briefly does so in s2…..but then regresses emotionally in s3–in my opinion, and Bryke hand him the avatar state anyway. That is……bad imo.

i agree. this happens because he functions as a vessel for mike's ego; his asian cultural references are all flattened into an ignorant teenage white boy character. real monks do not hate or make fun of other cultures, but aang thinks everyone needs to behave like the air nomads because their way is the only way.

if I may add my two cents, they also fumble the Buddhist enlightenment metaphor and ignore that many Buddhists use violence-shaolin monks for example.
