Heather Havrilesky, How to Be a Person in the World
I donāt think a lot of people understand that no matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something thatās so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And youāll say āHuh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but youāre right,ā and that doesnāt mean you were āmorally toxicā before, it means youāre a non-omniscient human capable of growth.
Also, some preferred terms for things will change and evolve, and terms we prefer now might eventually be considered gauche or even offensive, and that doesnāt mean you were a bigot at the time for using them. It means we evolved as a society and chose new terminology to reflect that change.
Nobody is a fully formed realisation of progressivism that can predict all shifts and modes of thought. The world will always change, and hopefully you will, too
āWe try to preserve lifeāeven when we know it has no chance of enduring its body. We feed it, keep it comfortable, bathe it, medicate it, caress it, even sing to it. We tend to these basic functions not because we are brave or selfless but because, like breath, it is the most fundamental act of our species: to sustain the body until time leaves it behind.ā

āThe only trick of friendship, I think, is to find people who are better than you areānot smarter, not cooler, but kinder, and more generous, and more forgivingāand then to appreciate them for what they can teach you, and try to listen to them when they tell you something about yourself, no matter how badāor goodāit might be, and to trust them, which is the hardest thing of all. But the best, as well.ā

āSome people have a softness that draws water from the earth. Call it dream. Call it flight. The opening & closing of your eyelids, like sparrow wings beckoning the trees. The music of your bones, startling spring from the earth, the dazzle of your smile squeezing honey from the bees. You are kinder than the cruelest thing thatās ever been done to you. You are so good, bad people are ready to break every cruel word over their knee. You are so good, lazy people line up to be the coffee-mug at your mouth. The religious talk about the second coming & you talk your shadow into starlight. If you asked the clouds for shade the sky would split itself like apple. If you asked me to cut out my heart I would do it with my own knife.ā

when hĆ©loĆÆse in portrait of a lady on fire asked ādo all lovers feel as though theyāre inventing something?āĀ
and when sarah ruhl saidĀ āthere was once a very great american surgeon named halsted. he was married to a nurse. he loved her-immeasurably. one day halsted noticed that his wifeās hands were chapped and red when she came back from surgery. and so he invented rubber gloves. for her. it is one of the great love stories in medicine. the difference between inspired medicine and uninspired medicine is love. when i met ana i knew: i loved her to the point of invention.ā
and when yehuda amichai saidĀ āwe were such a good and loving invention. an airplane made from a man and wife. wings and everything. we hovered a little above the earth. we even flew a little.ā
