WHO:Â @jimmityjammity WHERE: James and Lilyâs flat, September 15
Sheâd left Harry with James to go in search of a change of clothes for the former, since theyâd been planning to take an evening walk to the park. Not that Harry could play there yet, but he liked to see the kids running around from his comfortable spot in the stroller. Only sheâd been frozen solid in surprise, rummaging around his sock drawer and finding a ring box instead. Assuming at first that it was her Christmas present (since when did James organise so bloody early anyway), Lily had snuck a look inside and found something that looked suspiciously like an engagement ring.Â
Maybe she shouldnât have looked. They couldnât get married - could they? Did James want to get married? She hadnât even been thinking about that, she had a baby, a degree to get through, no money ⌠it was hardly the right time to be getting married. Which could account for why the ring was hidden away. But in Harryâs sock drawer? What was James playing at? Lilyâs head was spinning as she returned to find James leaning over Harry.Â
âPotter, I ⌠have the socks. From the sock drawer. Harryâs socks,â she repeated with a pointed emphasis, half-hoping James would confess all on the spot, though truly Lily didnât know what she wanted him to say. The idea of being married was an overwhelming one - Lily had never wanted to get married until she was at least 30 and with a good career. The idea of being married to James, specifically, on the other hand - that was overwhelming in an entirely different way. One hand clutched a pair of socks, the other, the ring box, and in her fluster she handed the box over instead. âI picked out the ones with footballs-â her eyes fell down to the ring sheâd just given James, â-which that is not.â Â
Lying flat on his stomach on the living room floor, James watches as his son kicks his legs enthusiastically, his chubby hands flattening on the soft rug beneath him. James knew it was too soon to be sure, that Harry was too little, but he could have sworn that the little boy had the natural talent for football, if the way his legs flailed about suggested anything. Reaching one hand forward, James runs a finger along the arc of Harryâs tiny foot, watching as his son jerks away with a soft gurgle.Â
This seemed to be the longest their son had been awake since he was born; Harry had a tendency to drop off anywhere and everywhere, except his own cot in the middle of the night, but James had a feeling they would have a napping baby as soon as they got the little tyke into his pram for their evening walk. While James knew that a newborn could be enough to tear some couples apart, he couldnât help but hope that their constant doting over and simply watching their son would be enough to bond himself and Lily even closer.
Lifting his head at the sound of Lilyâs voice, James quirks a brow at her strange phrasing, turning his attention back to the baby in question before he speaks, âThatâs where his socks live, Lil. In the sock drawer and all,â he says, pulling himself into a seated position. âPass âem here, Iâll battle him into them if you want.â James holds out his hand for the socks without looking, frowning as a solid square is placed into his hand instead. Turning to look at it, James freezes where he sits, his own mouth gaping a little as his eyes instantly dart toward his girlfriend. âUh...yeah. Thatâs not a pair of socks, thatâsâŚâ he stammers, before snapping his mouth shut, determined to sort his words out before he speaks. The last few weeks since Harryâs birth had been a hazy blur, and James knew that heâd hidden the ring somewhere in their flat where hopefully Lily wouldnât find it, and somehow in his sleep-deprived state heâd forgotten exactly where heâd put it. Without a Lily-free day to go hunting, heâd pushed it to the back of his mind, knowing it would show up eventually, but he hadnât imagined that it would show up like this. âIâve got an explanation if you want to hear it. Otherwise, we can...I mean, we can pretend this didnât happen if you donât want it to.â
