German commercial for Magic the Gathering/Marvel Super Heroes starring Daniel Brühl
one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.
which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes
and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts
holy shit I've never seen this articulated but OP is EXACTLY RIGHT.
From my own observation, #1 and #3 are the key truths here...but I don't think #2 really correlates?
I've interacted with perfectly pleasant people who are off enjoying extremely OOC shipping AUs in their nice little bubble. And I've seen toxic fans who act as champions for canon compliance when making Epic Dunks intended to stir up drama on twitter.
The issue has less to do with how a given fan relates to the source material, and more with how they relate to other fans.
I feel like OP Is saying "when someone is a nexus of fandom drama, then it's usually because of one of these three things." I do not think OP is saying "when someone does one of these three things, then it usually makes them a nexus of fandom drama." That is, "if P then Q" doesn't mean "if Q then P."
I have also met people who clearly engage in behavior #2, who were perfectly nice and reasonable. It'd be more difficult to do #1 or #3 without becoming a problem, but it's at least theoretically possible.
I think any fan is capable of acting toxic, whether they engage in those three behaviors or not. But OP is specifically talking in terms of creating fandom drama, which is so sustained that it breaks containment to non-fandom coverage, and gives fandom a bad name. And in my experience that type of wank often goes hand-in-hand with delusions of grandeur, whether it's 1) my opinions must influence the creators, or 2) my interpretations are objectively true, or 3) my fandom needs to care what I think.
Even the toxic enforcement of canon compliance frequently boils down to a narrow-minded view of canon (#2) dictated from the authority of mods, olds, or BNFs (#3) who assume without evidence that the creators implicitly agree with them (#1).
I don't believe there is a "wrong" way for fans to relate to a fandom's source material, whether it's curatorial, transformative, originalist, or even hostile. So in that sense I agree fandom drama is more about how fans relate to one another (and the authors) than how they relate to the text. But the more I think about it, the more I realize a lot of fandom drama I've witnessed is caused by fans letting their relationship with the text determine how they relate to other people.
filmation he man is something else u don't understand. when i watch it there is NOT a single second during which I don't LAUGH. that show is fucking hilarious nothing actually makes sense and i just love it sm, like ten seconds and i'm already on the floor ROLLING.
ok the mini comics the actual lore and everthing are so cool wow i love them sm ok but filmation he man is just a cult and u can't do nothing about it but accept it and enjoy every second of it.

It’s a magical liopleurodon.
Thankful we don’t share the water with these guys anymore - or mosasaurs, spinosaurus, plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, etc. etc. etc. I had a hard time choosing which one to draw.

Steel by Matt Bors
Okay i see some people shipping He-Man and Skeletor and I just want to make sure this information is right, okay, don't jump me
...
Is that not his uncle...or am I tripping..cause that's what I remember....
CAUSE....IM PRETTY SURE THEY'RE RELATED.....
It depends.
The 80s cartoon never really got too deep into Skeletor's origins, and never introduced a brother for Randor. Post-cartoon, late in the toyline, there was a minicomic about Skeletor trying to stop Randor from learning what happened to his brother Keldor, and it comes across like maybe Skeletor IS Keldor, but the story never gets around to just saying that.
As I recall, the 2002 cartoon established Skeletor was originally a man named Keldor, but never got around to revealing Keldor was Randor's brother. That was a reboot, so it's debatable whether you can use that 80s minicomic as evidence.
Years later, I think a toy pacakage bio finally connected all the dots so Skeletor is Keldor AND Keldor is Randor's brother. But that was yet another separate continuity, cherry-picking elements from the earlier stories. And the movie isn't strictly beholden to any of those stories.
So I'd say it's a 50-50 chance whether Travis Knight means to reveal Skeletor is He-Man's uncle someday, or if he thinks that's dumb and doesn't want to do it. And we don't even know if the next movie will actually happen, let alone if it'll be a true sequel or a reboot.
Most of the unresolved questions in Masters of the Universe canon are like this, so I wouldn't worry much about it. Unless you're shipping them and want to avoid a "we put Luke and Leia on our wedding cake in 1979!" predicament.

Transcript: Why does this shit always ha - every time I go to the beach, some fuckin mollusk or dead thing pulls up. Are you at least alive? I mean, I don’t remember you being on my towel, so I’m gonna [pokes the crab] oh! wait [pokes it again] Oh! Big boy. [gasps as the crab runs away] He’s a fa - what the fuck? Does he - live in the sea? [gasps]
I’m not Christian, I don’t go to church anymore, and my pastor died, but when he was alive I’d sometimes go to his sermons and I remember one time he said “it feels good to hate, but we know that it isn’t allowed, so when we’re told that we’re allowed to hate someone we get so excited that we forget we’re supposed to love”, and if my humble atheist ass might borrow some church talk I’d like to perhaps submit that
Anyhow sometimes on the day to day I feel disgust or revulsion and I have to ask myself “is this a danger to anyone at all or am I just looking for something I’m allowed to hate” and a solid 98/100 times it’s the latter so once again thank you pastor D
