Right up my alley
A commissioned floor lamp right out of a Jules Verne novel. This wasn’t part of the plan, it just happened. One day, I got this text message from someone I know asking if I would be interested in doing a commissioned floor lamp, he had been to my shop once before and liked my style. After spending a little time with the lamp base he had acquired that read “Century Lighting Inc. New York”, a better sense of direction for this design was unfolding. An industrial build with steampunk influence would be my focus in this floor lamp creation. My first thoughts were to slice up a couple cobalt blue bottles I had in stock but didn’t like how the pieces would fit around the copper body. More thought was needed and I decided to go with a cleaner look that added dimension to the body. This idea came from an early creation of mine called “Metallum” Latin for metal. Three brass rails and spheres would adorn the copper body in a minimalist way. For the most part, this design process was strait forward and right up my alley.
Here’s where things got a little tricky. When it come to the lamp shade, some trial and error was unavoidable in order to find the right formula for these panels. A series of folded galvanized sheet metal pieces were created to form a 16″ octagon lampshade with inserted stained glass for the final phase of this project.
