Today, I saw a blog post about DIY diffusers. Using my vast resources *cough kitchen drawers* I decided to make my own. 

Materials I used: empty bottle of Burt’s Bees something, cocktail picks (later replaced by barbecue sticks), perfume, rubbing alcohol, a piece of paper and yarn  

This is the bottle that I used. It’s a Burt’s Bees spot treatment thingy which I didn’t find a whole lot effective :/ I removed the rubber top and washed the inside. 

These are little cocktail picks that I dug out from my kitchen. But I soon came to realize the quite obvious fact that they were too short for the bottle. So later I switched them to a much longer barbecue stick (once again from the kitchen). I advise you to use sticks at least twice the height of the bottle of your choice.

Coco Mademoiselle eau de parfum. My dad recently surprised me by getting this from duty free on a business trip. Needless to say, I immediately fell in love! :D I really like the base note of it that lingers long after application, but one problem is that the scent is way too strong for casual, daily use. Especially in hot humid eternal summer of Panama. I’ve always felt like the depth and robustness of this perfume is better fit for autumn/winter. That’s partially why I decided to experiment by making a small diffuser before maybe thinning it down to a cologne for lighter, daily use. I was also worried the rubbing alcohol might alter the scent. But worry not; turns out it doesn’t! 

95% alcohol. 

I ripped out a piece from my gridded notepad + random yarn. Any string to tie around the bottleneck would do. One way or another, you will need something for cover to prevent the diffuser from evaporating too fast.   

Just a few spritz of perfume into the bottle… I used just a teeeensy bit relative to the amount of alcohol since I was trying to thin down the scent by like tenfold, and also because I wasn’t entirely sure if this was going to work xD (luckily it did!) Thus not wanting to waste too much perfume. Perfume-alcohol ratio depends the desired intensity. Or if you’re scared like me :) it’s wise to test with small amounts at the beginning.   

Add alcohol. Adjust the amount considering how intense you want the diffuser to be.  

Capped with paper and yarn.   

Voila! Your very own custom diffuser! The barbecue stick was definitely a better choice than those tiny cocktail picks.

Although I used a ratio of approx. 1:5 between the perfume and alcohol, my room is almost dizzyingly filled with the scent. Next time, I’ll use even less perfume and maybe make a larger one for the living room and inside of my closet :D
