I had to go all the way to Ireland to meet an American red-tailed hawk. Back on 🇺🇸 soil but desperately 🤒 so holiday photos (including other adorable lil winged cuties from amazing Newgrange Falconry 🦅🦉) will trickle in over the next few weeks! 😘 (at Wicklow, Ireland)

Belfast "peace lines" separating neighborhoods divided by deep religious/political differences, including controlled gates allowing access. People living near the wall have fenced over their back garden for safety, which I'm told has vastly improved for everyone over the years. Belfast is a beautiful vibrant city, and I hope to return seeing the derelict courthouse restored to its former glory. I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to say much or form an opinion but do encourage people to learn about the conflict. As an American, aspirational inmate artwork on the now closed Crumlin Road Gaol (yes I visited another prison) of our Statue of Liberty felt at odds with how divided we are currently - a devastating feeling. It's an important reminder to me that having empathetic conversations with people different than me and understanding their viewpoints are essential to maintaining the freedom we enjoy. I will say this: I never want to hold another rubber bullet again... (at Peace Wall, Belfast)

Kilmainham Gaol is a decommissioned Dublin prison built in 1796 based on progressive ideals for penal reform - the reality of life there, however, was the same overcrowding, cruelty, and suffering it (and many similar institutions) hoped to prevent. It permanently closed its doors in 1924. Today, restored buildings are a museum that serves as an important monument linked to the history and struggle for Irish Independence. I think it's important to spend RESPECTFUL time understanding the painful parts of humanity in situ, and encourage you to learn more about the history of the penal system. Unsurprisingly, I have book recommendations on the topic in my library if you are interested!
