Day 7's prompt is to write a microstory about an unusual love. I immediately knew what I wanted to do!

Title: Old Friend
Rating: General
Words: ~300
Summary: Ethan is happy today - but that doesn't mean he'd forget a small friend who had helped him all along the way.
~~~~~
Ethan would never admit to being sentimental. That was not the reason he kept his childhood teddy bear. No. If asked, heâd insist it was still in his possession because he admired the bear's resilience. After all, it had survived things that most never could.
Its fur had faded; what had once been a deep chestnut had paled to a washed-out taupe. There were patches missing, especially around its ears. The seam along its side remained uneven from where his father, Alan, had valiantly attempted repair by hand years ago after an unfortunate run-in with the family dog.
He kept it on a shelf in his closet, absurd for a man his age, he'd admit - even more absurd because he was a physician who trusted science over superstition, facts over feelings.
Still, on certain nights throughout the years - after losing a patient he tried desperately to save, or back when the silence of his apartment had reminded him of all the things he thought he could never have, on that night he almost lost Kaycee for good â he knew exactly where to turn for comfort. Sometimes he took it down and set it beside him, a reminder of a time when he had felt all the love and security in the world, and with this little bear by his side, he had held hope that perhaps one day, heâd feel it again. Â
And now that he had, he still couldnât bring himself to put it away for good, because a part of him understood that being loved in the present would never erase the things that had carried him through and brought him to the bright place where he was today. Â In fact, the love he was surrounded by now only made him more appreciative of his plush little friend. Â
It's taking me a little longer to do this than I had intended, but that's all right. :) I chose to write about Tobias & Casey today. One of her pet peeves is the dishwasher not being loaded correctly, and when she and Tobias had just started dating, she was in for a very rude surprise. Fortunately, it had a good outcome. đ
Summary: Tobias & Casey have not been dating long. One night, when she's visiting his townhome, she makes a ghastly discovery - how can he recover?
31-Day Writing Challenge Masterlist
Casey only wanted to put her wineglass in the dishwasher and return to Tobias, who was waiting â rather impatiently â on the couch. That was all.
But when she opened the dishwasher, her plans for the evening changed in an instant. She leaned in, as if closer inspection might change the horror she believed she had seen. Unfortunately, it did not.
Casey was aghast. Is this who she had gone and fallen in love with?
A large serving bowl was splayed across the bottom rack like it had been tossed there in defeat. She lifted it gently and shook her head. Yep, it was blocking the spray path in its entirety. Stoneware plates were wedged in varying angles, two of them spooning each other more perfectly than she and Tobias managed to do themselves.
There was a charcuterie board standing at attention and three mugs occupied the front row...right side up. Silverware was dropped into the basket in a chaotic cluster that left several forks nested together like they were there to be intimate, not cleaned.
Well, she laughed to herself, they are Tobiasâs forks.
She attempted to pull out the top tray, but couldnât as a large saucepan that had no business being there jammed it in place. That was her last straw.
âTobias,â she hollered, pinching the bridge of her nose. âCan you come here. Please?â
He all but raced into the kitchen, his signature smirk on his lips.
âWhatâs the matter, princess?â He asked. âI thought you were coming right back.â
He took a step toward her, but thought better of it when he saw the way she stood over the mangled array of dinnerware shoved into his overpriced Miele. Somehow, he knew he might be in trouble.
âWhat,â she said with a strained voice, âis this?â
âThe dishwasher,â he deadpanned. âItâs a Miele â top of the line, actually â it has a....â
âTobias â this is not a dishwasher,â she snapped. âThis is a cry for help!â
He stepped closer, playfully glancing her way. âItâs fine,â he shrugged.
âFine?â Casey asked, her eyes narrowed. âThis is not...fine.â
He wanted to take this whole thing seriously, but a chuckle escaped him nonetheless.
He reached for her, pulling her close against him. âYouâre being dramatic,â he said, hoping his amorous advances would steer the conversation.
They did not.
âPlease tell me that you gave your... staff... off today. Was this the first time my poor little rich boy had to load a dishwasher by himself?â She looked down at the abomination, her judgment beginning to morph into pity. âIf thatâs the case, thank God you have me here to help you today.â
He glanced at her, his mouth twitching.
âFor the record. I do not have staff.â
âYou have a housekeeper,â she countered.
âTwice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. So does half of Boston,â he defended. âThatâs not... staff.â
Caseyâs lips twisted into a teasing grin. âDebatable.â
He laughed under his breath. âI know how to load a dishwasher.â
âDo you?â
He opened his mouth to answer, but she grabbed his hand and led him toward the defiled appliance.
âI need you to see this.â She crouched and pulled out the lower rack. âBowls are not supposed to be placed like this. And plates - plates should face inward. Like this.â She shifted two into proper alignment. âYouâre creating dead zones.â
He raised a brow. âDead zones?â
âYes. Youâre blocking the water stream! It canât reach anything. Youâve created a ceramic fortress.â
He folded his arms, watching her with delighted amusement.
âAnd this,â she lifted the charcuterie board. âWhat on earth were you thinking?â
âIt fit,â he shrugged. âYou seem to feel very strongly about this.â
She ignored him, continuing to arrange things properly, then pushed the racks in and stood.
âThere,â she said, clapping her hands with approval. âAll better!â
Tobias looked at the dishwasher, then turned to Casey with a look that was equal parts amused and... aroused.
âThat,â he simpered, âwas incredibly hot.â
She turned to him, faintly suspicious now. Â
âHot?â
He took a slow step toward her. Â âIncredibly.â
He took another step, leaving almost no space between them. His hands found her hips, and he leaned in behind her, his mouth hovering by her ear.
âHot,â he repeated, his fingers sliding along her waist.â
âI just reorganized a dishwasher,â she said, with a soft giggle.
âExactly,â he hissed. âI may have to keep you around.â
Casey grinned. âBecause I know how to properly load a dishwasher?â
âFor many reasons,â he murmured teasingly as his hands moved lower.
The look on her face shifted. She leaned back into him, letting out a small gasp when his mouth brushed just below her ear.
âWell, if you think thatâs impressive,â she replied. âWait until you see what I do with your linen closet.â
That earned a low groan.
âYou know,â he said, already smiling against her skin, âthe linen closet happens to be upstairs. Right beside my bedroom.â
She turned in his arms then, looping hers around his neck, her eyes bright with mischief.
âWell,â she replied, âthen weâd better get to it.â
He let out a laugh before lifting her easily.
Caseyâs laughter echoed through the townhome as he carried her toward the stairs, and as they headed toward the bedroom, Tobias knew one thing with complete certainty: He would never... ever... load his dishwasher properly again.
Another 2-day late Valentine's Day fic for Open Heart. đThis one takes place during Open Heart, Book One - intern year. Participating in @choicesholidays Valentine event, prompt: The Secret Note.
Summary: It's intern year, and Kaycee has received a Valentine from a secret admirer. Her friends are playfully teasing her and trying to determine who sent it when Dr. Ramsey overhears - and he has very different feelings over the matter - until later in the day, when he receives one of his own.
Valentineâs Day had a magical way of transforming Edenbrook Hospital into a magical place. While the harsh fluorescent lighting and linoleum tiled floors remained, the halls were dotted with bright spots of pink and red as far as the eye could see. Mylar balloons, paper hearts, and childrenâs artwork turned the normally antiseptic environment into something cheerful and borderline romantic.
Based on the amount of flowers, candy, and cupcakes filling the nursesâ stations, it was clear that the staff was appreciated, even if it wasnât in a Cupidâs arrow kind of way.
But it was Valentineâs Day, so Cupid managed to make an appearance for a select few â and Dr. Kaycee MacClennan found herself in that elite little group.
She noticed the bright red envelope by her cubby the moment she walked up and dropped her chart onto the counter. She lifted it and tried to place it in her pocket surreptitiously, but there were too many witnesses nearby for her to achieve that.
Bryce was the first to notice, and he wasnât about to let it go.
âWell, well, well,â he drawled, leaning back in his chair with a theatrical flair. âWhatâs going on over there, Kaycee. Looks like youâre Miss Popular today.â
Kaycee shot him a look, envelope still in hand. âHush!" she said. "Is this from you?â
âMoi,â he said, feigning offence. âNot me. We said no strings, my dear â remember? And Valentineâs Day? That suggests... strings!â
âDid someone say Valentine?â Sienna squealed, popping up beside Bryce. âThatâs adorable!â
âItâs not adorable, itâs gross,â Jackie added, disgruntled. âUnless there is cash or a gift card in there. If thatâs the case, I hope this fool left me a card, too.â
Elijah, who had been observing with amusement, chimed in. âWell, thatâs reason to open it up right now! I wanted to know who it was from, but now, all I care about is if there was cash involved!â
âIf there is â lunch is on MacClennan today!â Bryce announced.
Kaycee gently shoved his shoulder. âThank you all for being so normal about this.â
âOpen it!â Sienna demanded. âCome on, Kaycee, we want to see who it's from!â
âNo.â
âOpen it,â Jackie echoed.
Bryce slid next to her, wrapping an arm over her shoulder with a sharpening grin. âOpen it, MacClennan.â
Kaycee exhaled slowly, looking at her name written in big, block letters across the envelope.
âThis is the penmanship of a serial killer,â she muttered, and Jackie quickly agreed. However, she pointed out that a wealthy benefactor who was a serial killer might be worth managing with student loans to repay.
Mostly to shut her friends up, Kaycee slid a finger under the envelope flap to open it.
Inside, she found a small card with a cartoon teddy bear holding a big red heart with the words Be Mine. A message - in the same block writing - said, âHappy Valentineâs Day, beautiful. Roses are red, violets are blue, Iâm so glad Iâm here at Edenbrook with you.â
No signature.
âAll right, which one of you did this?â Kaycee demanded â and all held up their hands, declaring innocence.
âWell, if thereâs no cash, that means it could be any of us," Elijah laughed.
Kaycee shook her head. âI really donât suspect any of you.â
âThen who?â Sienna asked, snapping her fingers. âDo you think it is the patient in room 305?â
âOh, yeah!â Elijah nodded. âYou have to admit, Kaycee, he seems to have his hospital gown open anytime you walk in.â
That elicited a groan from Kaycee, a chuckle from Bryce â but Sienna was still attempting to find the romance in it all. âA secret admirer is so romantic!â she cooed.
âSaid just like someone who has never watched a single episode of Law & Order,â Jackie chided. âLet me tell you â a poor serial killer is definitely not worth the hassle.â Â
Kaycee looked at the back of the card. âWell, they did spluge on three dollars to fail to write their name.â
âThree dollars?â Elijah said. âIn this economy? Thatâs true love, right there.â
âI say we look over the staff schedules and patient lists over the past 24 hours,â Bryce chimed in. âWe can narrow this down.â
âAbsolutely not,â Kaycee laughed, but the fun was cut short before she could say another word.
âMacClennan!â
The single word cut through the air like a blade â and every intern straightened at once, except for Kaycee. No one needed to turn to see who it was. Dr. Ethan Ramseyâs voice alone sent waves of terror through internsâ souls â no one got out of Edenbrook's residency program unscathed.
He stood at the end of the station, his unreadable expression somehow showing more disdain and carrying more authority than shouting ever could. His gaze moved across the group, inevitably landing on the red envelope in Kayceeâs hand.
Bryce cleared his throat. âWe were just trying to...â
âI can see what you were doing,â Ethan interrupted. âOr more accurately, what you werenât doing. If you have this much free time, Iâd be happy to correct that.â
âNope,â Jackie said, already gathering charts. âNo need. I was just leaving these clowns behind.â
Elijah grabbed a tablet, and Sienna vanished with impressive speed. Bryce shot Kaycee one last look, saying weâre not done here before retreating down the hall, and then just the two of them remained.
Kaycee leaned back casually, entirely unaffected by the crumudgeonly attndingâs presence. Ethanâs eyes flicked back to the card before returning them to her face.
âYouâre an intern, not a high school student, MacClennan,â he said in a measured tone.
Kaycee blinked. âAre you saying Iâm accountable for someone leaving a card for me?â A wicked smile appeared on her lips. âYou sound envious, Dr. Ramsey.â
âI sound like your attending,â he glared.
âMy attending who didnât get a Valentine from a secret admirer,â she said teasingly.
For the briefest moment, she swore she saw amusement in his eyes, but it was gone so quickly she second-guessed her assessment.
âI assure you,â he said dryly, âI won't lose sleep over that.â
âSure,â she smirked. âDonât worry, Dr. Ramsey â the dayâs not over, thereâs still hope for you.â
âHighly unlikely,â he said, and Kaycee was impressed, because that came with the slightest bit of a laugh.
She shrugged. âYou never know.â
A brief silence filled the air â it was familiar, charged, and, as always, ignored. Then a pager went off, bringing them back to reality.
âRoom 412,â Ethan said, but Kaycee was already on the move.
âOn it.â
She headed down the hall, the Valentine tucked into her pocket, a move Ethan didnât miss. He watched her until she was out of sight.
"This absurd holiday is almost over," he mumbled, with a shake of his head.
~~~~~
The hospital always felt like a different place late at night - and tonight was no different. The bright feeling that filled the corridors early in the day was deflating as fast as the mylar balloons. The lights were dimmed, voices soft â it was a time Ethan had come to appreciate â heaven knows he was one of the only doctors of his stature who still found himself there this late.
Exhaustion was etched on his face when he returned to his office, and he was relieved to fall into his chair. He removed his glasses, carefully placing them on his desk before rubbing his eyes - and that's when he saw it.
A small, red paper heart was lying in the center of his desk. It was cut unevenly, as if it had been done by a child, but folded neatly in half.
He let out a chuckle and reached for it â opening it at once. Inside, he found a message written in a neat, beautiful script.
âItâs Valentineâs Day, and Iâm here to say - youâre not as heartless as people say.
PS â Sorry, Â thatâs the best I could do.
Oh, and donât worry - that secret is safe with me.
Xoâ
Ethan read it â more than once â a hesitant smile playing on his lips. A slow breath escaped him, something between a sigh and a quiet, disbelieving laugh.
âOf course,â he said out loud â knowing exactly who left this for him.
He leaned back, the paper heart still open in his hand, and logged into his laptop to see Kayceeâs schedule. He was disappointed when he realized she was already gone for the day.
For months, this woman had been getting under his skin, and he did all he could to keep that boundary in place. He was an attending, she was an intern. It was a simple line he was unwilling to cross because he knew all too well that, once crossed, they could never be redrawn, and the fall-out would be swift.
Still, this small, ridiculous piece of construction paper had warmed something inside him more than he wanted to admit, even to himself.
âYouâre not as heartless as people say,â he read out loud, his faint smile growing wider.
He carefully folded the paper again, placing it into the pocket of his lab coat. He knew he wouldnât reply â it was doubtful that he'd even acknowledge it â but he couldnât deny this little moment had made his day. It felt good - and it felt dangerous. But as he walked toward the elevator, he knew one thing was certain: his own heart felt as light as the paper one tucked away in his pocket.
"Dangerous," he said, pressing the elevator button and watching the doors close - but he couldn't wipe the smile off his face if he tried.
I'm a day late - but surprised I was able to finish at all. Life's been busy. I miss Tobias and Casey so much. I still write for them all the time, but not to "post it" level. But on Valentine's Day, I wanted to make sure I did.
I'm participating in @choicesholidays Valentine's event - this prompt is reconnection, but in a unique way. If anyone is still here to read this - hope you enjoy it! :)

My Terribly Outdated and I Must Work On It - Tobias x Casey Masterlist.
Tobias had never spent this long choosing a card in his life.
In fact, it wasnât all that long ago when he wouldnât have stepped foot into the little gift shop he found himself in, much less spend an inordinate amount of time inside it trying to find the perfect card.
Heâd already been through rows of pink and red cards, but none of them were right. Some tried too hard â coming off like a Hallmark movie. Others were too glittery or downright corny. None of them felt like Casey.
Casey. He smiled softly just thinking of her. She wasnât a woman defined by roses and clichĂŠs. No, to him, she was the warmth that brought him through the cold Boston winter. The laugh that could make him smile on his darkest days. She was the light who changed his life, and he loved her. God, he loved her. This Hallmark holiday paled compared to what they shared.
Still, she deserved to feel special on Cupidâs holiday, and Tobias was going all out. He had already ordered the roses â two dozen to be delivered to her at the hospital where they both worked, and another two to their home â well, his home, but she really spent all her time there. He already secured chocolate-covered strawberries in a heart-shaped box â her absolute favorite. And, for good measure, he bought her favorite perfume.
There were still three days until the holiday, but he had it choreographed better than a Tony award-winning play. Theyâd start with a coupleâs spa day at a spot they both loved. That would be followed by a candlelit dinner at Yvonneâs, and afterward, letâs just say what he had planned for her back home made even him blush as he meandered through the rows of red teddy bears and overpriced sweets.
His fingers finally closed around a simple card - ivory paper with a delicate gold script. Its inscription was simple: With you, everything feels like home.
He smiled to himself. âYeah, this is it,â he said â when a voice pulled him from his thoughts.
âTobias?â
He turned and came face to face with someone from another lifetime. It had been years since he had seen Rachel Graham, but now she stood just a few feet away. She wasnât hard to recognize â she looked mostly the same, polished and composed - her delicate features framed by wavy brunette hair that was a few inches shorter than he recalled. And her perfectly arched brows lifted in mild surprise.
âIt is you,â she smirked.
âRachel,â he said carefully. âHi. Itâs been...â
âA very long time,â she replied.
They exchanged the brief, polite pleasantries expected from people who once knew each other in ways that now felt distant. It was an awkward exchange, but not unkind. Then her gaze dropped to the card in his hand, and a soft chuckle escaped her.
âSo, whoâs this yearâs victim?â
The words hit Tobias harder than they should have, his own eyes widening in response.
âVictim?â He said quickly. âThereâs no... victim. This is for Casey, my girlfriend, I love her, and...â
He paused because something in her expression caught him off guard. Leaving him feeling cold and defensive in a way he didnât quite understand.
Rachel folded her arms. âOh, come on, T. Valentineâs Day? It was always your favorite holiday. Wine, dine, impress⌠and then some poor woman wakes up in your very expensive sheets, honestly believing you might call again. Iâm sure there was a local support group or two back in the day.â Â
Tobiasâs jaw tightened. âThatâs not fair, Rachel.â
âIsnât it?â
âI was always honest back then,â he said, more firmly. âI never promised anything serious. The women I dated - they knew what I could and could not give. I never gave anyone false illusions.â
She tilted her head, not quite believing. âMaybe. But you also knew when they cared about you a lot more than you did in return â and you were more than happy to let them hope anyway â as long as you got what you wanted.â
The silence fell thick between them. He could hear the words she didnât say, âincluding me.â His defences fell. He knew he had never meant to harm her, but he also knew that we donât get to tell others if we hurt them, so he softened.
âIâm...Iâm really sorry if I hurt you,â he said quietly. âThat was never my intention.â
Rachel shook her head, raising a hand protectively. âItâs ancient history, now,â she replied, sternly, but not unkind. âTrust me, Iâm fine, Tobias. You did no permanent damage here.â
Her eyes flicked back to the card in his hands.
âBut, Iâve hoped youâve changed â for this Caseyâs sake. Otherwise â best of luck to her - sheâs going to need it.â
And with that, she was gone.
~~~~~
Tobias didnât want to admit it as he walked home on the cold city streets, but Rachel had gotten to him. No matter how hard he pushed the thoughts away, they kept returning.
Was I that bad? He thought. But the question that haunted him the most was - Â and have I honestly changed?
The thought terrified him. His past reputation was colorful, for sure. Even those who loved him most had him painted as an eternal bachelor â his mother and aunties had long given up on expecting more from him. But that wasnât him anymore, he thought. He loved Casey with all his heart. What they shared was real, deeper than anything heâd ever known in his life. He was confident of that, but Rachelâs voice lingered in his mind, chipping away at that confidence bit by bit - which upset him more than he wanted to admit.
~~~~~
Casey was in the kitchen when he stepped inside. The sleeves of her blue sweatshirt pushed up, long blonde hair pulled into a ponytail atop her head as she stirred something that made his former bachelor pad smell like something he had only recently come to know. Her face lit up the second she saw him.
âHey, you!â She beamed. âYouâre early! I tried a new recipe, and Iâm not sure if itâs going to work, itâs...â
She stopped mid-sentence when she saw his face. Because she could read him better than anyone in the world, and one glance told her that all was not right. She placed the spoon on its rest and wiped her hands with a towel, stepping toward him.
âWhatâs wrong?â she asked softly.
He hesitated, choked on his own words when he started to speak. Then the truth tumbled out without a second thought.
âAre you happy with me? Because Iâm⌠Iâm not sure I deserve you.â
Her brow knitted together. âTobias, donât be ridiculous,â she replied. âYou know how happy I am, and we both deserve each other. Where is this coming from?â
So he told her â about Rachel, about his past, of which Casey was already well aware. But Rachelâs words wouldnât release him, nor the fear they ignited in his heart â fear that maybe, deep down, he was still the cad people once believed him to be â and Casey deserved so much better than that. Â
Casey listened without interruption, and when he finished, she took his hands in hers.
âT,â she said gently, âweâve all made mistakes. We all look back at things and wish we had made different choices. Thatâs part of being human. The fact that youâre even reflecting on this says something. People grow, we change â if we do it right â and I think you are.â
She gave him a small, crooked smile. âAnd if I remember correctly, Bostonâs former Casanova did the impossible. He spent months at my side as I walked through the worst time of my life - Â celibate as a monk â even though neither of us knew if Iâd ever be more than your friend. That doesnât sound like a shallow, careless man to me.â
She watched him swallow.
âAnd, besides,â she added softly, âWeâre already time-tested. I mean, our relationship is relatively new⌠but new-new. It may be our first Valentineâs Day...â
He huffed a quiet laugh at their ongoing argument, recalling last yearâs freezing Valentineâs trip to an alpaca farm. They were two idiots hopelessly in love, but pretending they werenât.
âThat was our first Valentineâs Day,â he insisted.
âIt absolutely was not,â she said, with a smile that melted his heart.
âYou were never a bad person, Tobias. Sure - you liked your freedom and werenât ready to settle down. Maybe you misjudged some situations, but at least you were honest. And... youâre not that man anymore.â
Her eyes were shining brightly as she gazed up at him.âYouâre the most loving partner I could have asked for. I think Iâm the lucky one in this scenario.â
He felt something inside him break loose. Warmth and love rushed in to fill the crevices where guilt and doubt had started to settle.
âSo,â he smiled faintly. âYou donât mind being stuck with me?â
Her smile answered him before a word was spoken.
âI plan on being stuck with you as long as youâll have me.â
âThen weâll have to keep loving each other when weâre old and gray,â he murmured, brushing a lock of hair from her face. âBecause I never plan on letting you go.â
âGood,â she said, jumping into his arms. Â
This kiss that followed was soft and slow â filled with the comfortable familiarity between them, but never devoid of the fire that burned underneath. When they parted, she reached into a small bag on the counter and handed him a tiny chocolate heart.
âHappy Valentineâs Day, baby.â
He let out a little laugh. âBut itâs three days away.â
She shrugged, playfulness in her eyes. âWhen do we play by the rules? We can start celebrating early.â
He stepped toward her, letting out a little groan when his hands found her hips. Dinner sat forgotten on the stove.
âThen I say we start right now...â
And they did â right there and then. And for the remainder of their lives together, Valentineâs Day would always be a multi-day event filled with the playfulness and love that defined who they were. And one thing was for sure: the two of them? They were forever. â¤ď¸

Summary: The guys tried to get a little revenge on the girls for the little game they played last time they went out, but now, things may be getting a little out of hand. đ

Tobias waited for the laughter to subside before moving back to Caseyâs side, his hand slipping easily into that familiar spot at the small of her back.
âYou played that off perfectly, beautiful,â he murmured, leaning in to plant a kiss behind her ear.
He nodded toward Pete - the new Red Sox pitcher the guys "set her up with" earlier that night. Pete was still standing there looking equal parts amused and concerned, his arm still very much looped in Caseyâs.
âYou did good, man,â Tobias told him pleasantly. âBut the gameâs over.â
Then, to his shock, Casey didnât drop Peteâs arm; in fact, she tightened her grip around it.
âGame?â she questioned, blinking up at her husband with wide, innocent eyes. âWhat game?â
Tobias lifted his brows â amused, concerned...confused.
âAll right,â he grinned like the Cheshire cat. âCute, babe - but do I need to remind you weâre married?â He tapped the ring on his finger lightly for effect and went on with a wink. âAnd youâre married to me. Come on, can anyone else possibly compare?â
At the bar, Ethan rolled his eyes, muttering, âJesus,â under his breath as Casey let out a melodic laugh. Still not letting go of Pete, she reached up and dragged her fingers over Tobiasâs jaw, tracing the edge of his bemused smile with something soft and a little dangerous in her eyes.
âOf course not, my love,â she said sweetly. âThat goes without saying. But Iâm married, not dead.â Her gaze flicked deliberately back to Pete. âAnd look at him. I mean, heâs⌠heâs really hot, T.â
Behind them, Bryce let out a low whistle as Merida waved down the bartender. âPlease, shots, for all of us. We're going to need them for what weâre about to witness.â
Olivia covered her mouth, her wide eyes sparkling. âYou donât think theyâre really going to â I mean, do you?â
Bryce handed his beloved a Jolly Rancher shot. âWatch and learn, my dear,â he kissed her forehead. âWatch and learn.â
Tobias blinked, at a loss for words, for once - something that wasnât lost on Ethan. âYouâre... youâre serious.â
âI mean, weâre open-minded,â she shrugged, with a wicked smile. âAnd I think Pete would be a memorable addition to our repertoire for a night. Or, you know⌠two. Or three. Depending on how it all goes, of course.â
âOh, of course,â Tobias nodded - as if there were any question.
Ever the team player, Pete leaned in toward Casey. âWell, you are hot as hell.â He glanced over at Tobias. âAnd youâre not so bad yourself. Iâd be down.â
Merida shrugged, patting Oliviaâs knee. âItâs OK, we donât judge... and besides, they wonât involve you.â
Tobias glared at Pete for a second. Then he calmly lifted his glass, draining its contents in one smooth gulp, his eyes never leaving Caseyâs. Finally, he smiled.
âAll right,â he said, casually glancing at his watch. âSo, do you want to hang out here a little longer? Or should I go rent a room right now?â
Casey didnât flinch. âWhy rush?â she teased, leaning in close enough that only Tobias could hear her voice. âWeâre having fun.â
Tobias leaned back, unfazed, his signature smirk on his lips. Pete, on the other hand, was beginning to crack.
âUh, guys,â he said, finally releasing Caseyâs arm and rubbing the back of his neck. âAs much as that would be⌠really fun, I donât, uh⌠I donât think this would be a good idea.â
Casey pouted. Tobias tilted his head. âOh, come on," Tobias chided. âYouâre already here.â
Pete laughed nervously, slowly backing away. âYou two are⌠incredible. Really - and know it would be... memorable. But Iâm gonna bow out before I accidentally ruin my entire life.â
Then, with a quick, polite nod, he was gone.
Tobias and Casey turned toward each other as Bryce appeared at their sides with two fresh drinks in hand. He handed one to each, and they immediately clinked their glasses together.
âGod,â Casey said, grinning. âThat poor man had no idea what he was walking into, did he?â
Tobias slipped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. âThe poor son of a bitch was no match for us, sweetheart.â
âNo one is, baby,â she replied, resting her head on his shoulder. âNo one.â
âAnd weâre thankful for that,â Ethan shouted from a few feet away. âThe world can't handle more than two of you â the fact that the universe brought you together is dangerous enough.â
âI donât know,â Merida chimed in, looking delighted. âI think that was extremely impressive!â
Olivia stared between Tobias and Casey. âYou guys,â she blurted. âI was this close to thinking you were really going to do it.â
Tobias and Casey met eyes over the rims of their glasses, identical smirks forming in perfect sync.
Oliviaâs eyes widened more. âWait. Were you?â
âI guess the world will ever know,â Tobias said casually.
âI mean, we do,â Casey smiled. âBut weâre not telling.â
Ethan let out a groan. âIâm not hanging out with any of you anymore.â
Merida slid an arm through his. âLike you have a choice.â
âNope,â he sighed. âI know, Iâve got a life sentence with the lot of you.â
âThatâs right,â Merida winked. âAnd that makes you one lucky man!â

Confession: I have polar bear plunged! Twice, to be exact. I came across the photos last night, and I was inspired to write a little fic. đđťââď¸đ§
Fandom: Open Heart (Playchoices)
Pairing: Tobias Carrick x F!MC (Casey MacTavish)
Rating: Teen
Words: ~930
Summary: Tobias and Casey are participating in Boston's Polar Bear Plunge - and one of them is just not feeling it!
Participating in @fluff-cember - Prompts day 7 - polar bear, day 9 - frigid, and day 10 - mistletoe.
It was absolutely freezing. It was so cold that not only could Tobias see his breath â he swore he spotted little icicles hanging off of it, too. He glanced over at Boston Harbor, which was no more than a sheet of ice, and took a long swig of coffee from his Yeti tumbler. He shook his head. How did he agree to this?
Casey was standing a few feet away â although standing probably wasnât the right choice of words. Already stripped down to her bright red sweatshirt and oversized Edenbrook hoodie, she was simply vibrating with excitement. She couldnât stay still, and Tobias wasnât sure if that was due to excitement or to prevent frostbite. Either way, he couldn't deny - she was glowing.
âI just want to say,â she announced, though absolutely no one asked, âthat this was the best idea ever! Iconic! I can't wait to jump in -Â I feel so â alive!â
Tobias just stood there, hands shoved deep into the pockets of his North Face parka, his expression neutral. He looked⌠fine. Totally fine. Not at all like a man accustomed to the âbalmyâ winter climates of Washington D.C. and Boston, a man who had spent the better part of his life perfecting the art of avoiding hypothermia. Yet... here he was.
âMmmh. Alive,â he hummed. âYou say that now.â
Casey grinned, her eyes filled with delight. âHey - youâre the one who signed us up for this,â she reminded.
âThat was under the influence of far too much wine and absurd amounts of peer pressure,â he insisted. âEthan called me a chicken. What was I supposed to do?â He sipped his coffee again. âMeanwhile, I'm sure his pale ass is at home, currently buried under an overpriced goose down duvet... and Iâm... here.â
The sound of Casey's giggles filled the air and â just for a moment â he thought the sound alone might warm him to his core. âYouâre going to love it!" She reassured. "Sure â itâll be frigid for a moment or two, but then â youâll feel amazing.â
He lifted a brow. âHave you done this before?â
âNo,â she shrugged. âBut my cousin Peter did, and he told me all about it.â
He exhaled through his nose, glancing toward the water where a small crowd of fellow âpolar bearsâ were swaying to the sounds of the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett. But no amount of summer songs would make this foolâs errand easier â it was thirty-six degrees, and he was officially questioning every life choice that had brought him to this moment.
In the distance, a volunteer blew a whistle far too enthusiastically, and Casey began tugging off his clothes â an activity he usually enjoyed much more than this.
âCome on, Dr. Carrick,â she beamed. âYouâll love it - mind over matter! Besides, itâs for charity!â
âFine,â he sighed. Stripping down to a black swimsuit that hadnât seen the light of day since August on the Cape. The cold bit him immediately, and Casey saw his shoulders tense.
âAre you OK?â she asked with genuine concern.
âYeah,â he smiled, good-naturedly. âBut Iâm a bit terrified.â
âCome on,â she said, taking his hand. âIâll be with you the whole time.â
They counted down with the group: three... two... one... then they were off â running toward the ice-encrusted water.
The first hit stole the air from Tobiasâs lungs. It wasnât cold; it was pure torture. He felt the frost climbing his legs, seizing his muscles, and he swore his brain would short-circuit. Â
Beside him, Casey gasped, then laughed. Actually laughed. As much as he adored her, he found himself wondering if they were as well-matched as he had believed up until now.
âWhat is wrong with you, woman?â he said sharply, though his eyes were lit up with amusement.
âOh my god,â she panted. âThis isâthis is incredible!â
âIncredible is not the word Iâd use,â he managed through chattering teeth. He was very aware of his heart rate. He was also very aware of Casey splashing water at him like it was a summer day at the lake.
âI feel like my entire body is coming alive,â she beamed.
âAnd I feel like my soul is trying to escape mine,â he replied.
They stayed in the water longer than he had anticipated â longer than he thought was medically advisable.
âOK,â he finally said, voice tight. âOK, I am officially done.â
âYeah," she said - a little sad. âWe probably should get out.â
They stepped onto the shore together, skin burning as the frigid air assaulted them. Event volunteers were already draping towels over their shoulders as Tobias reached into the pocket of his parka.
Casey, shivering but still smiling, tapped his arm. âYou hated it - didn't you?â
âI did,â he agreed quickly. Then he pulled out a small sprig of green, lifting it over her head. âNow â make it up to me.â
âIs that...â
âMistletoe,â he said solemnly. âI brought it for warmth.â
âFor warmth?â She laughed. âI donât think thatâs how it works!â
Before he could respond, she wrapped a giant, fluffy blanket around them, cocooning them together. Her cold hands found his chest; his chin rested against her temple. He dipped his head and kissed her, slow and deliberate, relishing the warmth of her lips against his ice-cold skin. She melted into it, laughter humming between them, the harbor, the cold, and thoughts of impending frostbite nearly faded away.
When they finally pulled back, she looked up at him with bright eyes. âSo,â she says. âAre we going to do this again next year?â
âAbsolutely,â he grinned, pulling her closer. âAs long as we do it in July.â

Summary: Christmastime tends to make Casey & Olivia emotional every year, but this year, Tobias & Bryce really have their hands full.
Casey sniffled for the third time in as many minutes. She was curled into the corner of the couch, snuggled next to Olivia, who was clutching a red-plaid throw pillow like it was a life preserver.
âItâs all right to be emotional,â Olivia consoled, her own eyes glossy. âItâs just⌠that time of year.â
Casey let out a little laugh. âI know,â she sighed. âI get that, but I also have to admit that weâre being completely ridiculous.â
Olivia nodded with utter sincerity. âCompletely ridiculous.â
âI mean, I cried over a stupid Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer commercial!â Casey laughed, though there may have been tears as well.
Olivia gasped â borderline offended. âCrying over that commercial is one hundred percent valid. Did you see the Land of the Misfit Toys? That whole island is just an emotional trauma wasteland decorated wth bows and glitter. Iâve been crying over it for decades!â
âYes,â Casey smiled, âBut this year... is worse.â
âOh! Itâs so much worse,â Olivia agreed, sobbing. The two women collapsed into each other, arms wrapped tight. They were two blubbering messes under a red fleece blanket lit up by the glow of a perfectly decorated tree.
In the kitchen, Tobias and Bryce exchanged sympathetic looks over mugs of steaming tea.
âOh, boy,â Bryce muttered.
Tobias slowly stirred his hot chocolate. âWe have officially entered the danger zone, my friend.â
âEntered?â Bryce asked, eyes wide. âWhen did we leave it?â
They worked in silence after thatâtea bags steeping, cocoa steaming, chocolate chip cookies stacked high on holiday plates. They fell into a familiar rhythm - after all, they had both seen this show before.
Bryce shook his head good-naturedly. âYou realize theyâre going to be like this all month, right?â
âYep!â Tobias grinned. âAnd weâre going to love them every second of it.â
They carried the mugs and plates into the living room, holding them out before themselves like peace offerings.
Olivia looked up first, tears in her eyes. âOh my goodness! You made us tea? And cookies!â Her voice wobbled. âThatâs so sweet.â
Casey accepted the treats as Tobias sat at her side, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. But then, she squinted at him over the rim of her mug. âYou two were making fun of us... werenât you?â
Tobiasâs face reddened brighter than Rudolphâs nose â caught!
âOnly in the most loving, deeply enamoured, totally obsessed with you way possible,â he said, leaning over to kiss her temple.
âHeâs right," Bryce grinned. "You know we worship the ground our semi-emotionally unstable queens walk on.â
They all settled inâBryce at Oliviaâs side, Tobias pulling Casey closer. She exhaled, her hand drifting reflectively to her stomach.
âAre you just being so sweet because â well â you know â weâre having your babies?â
Tobias snorted. âCasey â seriously?â He rested his hand protectively over hers. âI adored the hell out of you long before you decided to grow a whole human... and Iâm going to adore you long after youâre done.â
âSame,â Bryce said, placing a kiss on Oliviaâs huge bump. âBut right now?â Â He looked between the women. âRight now weâre both in love with you about a thousand times more.â
The room went still â then Casey and Olivia stared at each other.
âYouâ?â Casey breathed.
âYou too?â Olivia whispered.
Then they both burst into tears simultaneously, clutching each otherâs hands as their partners held them close, giving each other eyes over the weeping womenâs shoulders for moral support.
After the chaos settled and the hugs and gentle belly rubs tapered off, Olivia leaned back against Bryceâs chest, staring at the tree.
âI canât believe that we'll be celebrating our next Christmas with our little ones."
Tobias tightened his arm around Casey, and Bryce kissed Oliviaâs hair. The tree lights somehow felt warmer, matching the glow on the four friendsâ faces.
Next year, there would be more stockings to fill, lots of midnight feedings, and so much more chaos â and they couldnât wait. There was one thing they were all sure of - life couldnât be more perfect than it was right now.

Ethan knew something was off from the start. The teenage boy behind the ticket counter glanced at himâthen at Emma, who was holding his hand and talking a mile a minuteâthen back to Kaycee.
âAre you sure youâre up for this?â he asked, amusement flickering in his eyes. âThis rideâs not for the faint of heart.â
Kaycee raised a brow, her Philly attitude kicking in. âItâs a hayride,â she declared. âI think we'll survive.â
âAll right,â he shrugged. âThatâll be seventy-five dollars.â
As they followed the dirt path toward the waiting wagon, Ethan leaned close, lowering his voice so Emma wouldnât hear. âKaycee... what do you think he meant by that? Do you think this ride is scary?â
âScary?â Kaycee scoffed. âThe only scary thing about it is the price. Seventy-five dollars?â
Ethan had to laugh. âUsually Iâd be the one griping about that. Your role is to say, as long as we make family memories and get great pictures, itâs worth it.â
âAnd Iâd be right,â she smirked. âThereâs nothing better than pumpkin season! And I assure you â this is wonât be scary!â
A half hour later, she was eating those words.
The wagon jolted forward through a tunnel of barren trees draped in cobwebs.
âItâs all right,â Kaycee insisted. âTheyâre fake â itâs not like real spiders spun them.â
But as they rolled beneath the branches, dozens of rubber spiders dropped from above, prompting a chorus of shrieks.
âGreat,â Ethan deadpanned, draping a protective arm around his daughter. âPerfectly wholesome family fare.â
Moments later, a bloodcurdling scream emerged through a thicket of trees, and Emmaâs head shot up. âWas that part of the ride?â she asked, eyes wide.
âProbably?â He replied, though his voice was laced with uncertainty.
Before he could elaborate, a cloaked figure lunged from the trees, chainsaw roaring. The wagon erupted in screams, and Kaycee nearly launched herself into Ethanâs lap.
âOh my God!â she cried, clutching his sleeve. "Why would they do this?" she cried. "It's a hayride!"
"I think you missed the word haunted in the description," Ethan grumbled, before carrying on about researching before we book an outing, but he stopped cold when he heard Emmaâs delighted laugh breaking through.
âThat was awesome!â The pig-tailed girl beamed.
Ethan's jaw dropped. âAwesome?â
âYeah, awesome!â Emma confirmed, sticking her tongue out at a scary monster.
âYouâre... youâre not scared?â Kaycee asked, breathless.
âNo, Mommy!â Emma giggled. âItâs just pretend!â
Another shriek echoed as a headless horseman charged past them in the fog. Kaycee gasped â Ethan jerked so fast his glasses flew into a nearby hay bale. But Emma? Emmaâs laughter only grew louder.
âDaddy, did you see that? He didnât even have a head!â
âYeah,â Ethan managed, forcing a smile. âI caught that.â
As they moved deeper into the woods, skeletons swung from branches, a mummy rose from a coffin, and a zombie clown stumbled toward them with a ghoulish grin. Kayceeâs heart was racing. Ethan shut his eyes. But with each new creature that jumped out at them, Emmaâs exuberance only grew.
When the wagon finally pulled away from the trees, Ethanâs shoulders sagged in relief. Kaycee exhaled, half laughing, half trembling, while Emma beamed like she had conquered the world.
âAgain! Again!â She screamed as Ethan helped her off the wagon. âCan we do it again?â
âYou didnât think it was too scary?â he asked.
âNah!â she said proudly. âIâm brave. Just like you, Daddy.â
âJust like, Daddy!â Kaycee exclaimed. âWhat are you talking about? Daddy was shaking like a leaf!â
Ethan cleared his throat. âYouâre right, Emma â youâre exactly like me!â
Kaycee straightened Emmaâs scarf with a laugh, then looped her arm through Ethanâs.
âJust like you,â she whispered as they walked toward the cider stand, boots crunching over fallen leaves. âYou screamed before me.â Â
âI was startled,â he said, solemnly. âNot scared â thereâs a difference.â
âThereâs no difference,â Kaycee laughed. âYou jumped higher than Anthony Edwards â but nowhere near as graceful.â
âMaybe next year, we should stick to apple picking,â he sighed, pulling her closer.
âAgreed! No masks. No chainsaws. Just apples.â
But Emma had different ideas. âUh-uh!â She sang, hands on her hips. âWeâre doing this again next year! But next time â can we sit closer to the front?â
Ethan groaned as Kaycee laughed. âWho does she get this from?â
âBeats me,â he said. âBut next year, weâre sending her with Uncle Bryce and Uncle Tobias.â
âWould we warn them?â Kaycee smirked.
Ethanâs eyes twinkled with delight. "Now, where would the fun be in that?"
I'm not sure if I'll get through all of @kisstember like I had hoped, but I needed some Ethan x Kaycee representation in there. So here's one for 9/29's prompt - good night kiss.

Summary: Ethan & Kaycee find themselves stranded at a conference in New York City, with memories of Miami fresh in their mind. How will this one turn out?
A/N: I did this really quick - be kind. :)
This wasnât supposed to be an overnight trip â a quick flight into New York, a presentation, then back to Boston the very same day. But Mother Nature had other plans in store. By eleven oâclock, the storm had turned Manhattan into a blanket of white, though it didn't seem to concern Ethan and Kaycee, who found themselves wrapped in the soft, warm glow that only hotel bars seemed to provide.
They had abandoned any hope of catching a flight hours ago and closed their laptops shortly thereafter. They promised themselves theyâd share just one drink before retiring to their separate rooms â rooms - no more Miami slip-ups, that lesson had been learned. But one drink turned into two, two into three, and thatâs how they found themselves here at this late hour.
At first, the conversation stayed in safe territory: research, patients, hospital politics. But eventually it steered into dangerous ground - childhood memories, first loves, where they saw themselves in five years. Thatâs when the tender looks started, punctuated with awkward silences that stretched on a moment too long until one of them inevitably broke the tension, cracking a joke or gently turning away.
Neither wanted to leave, not when the bar thinned out nor the snow continued to pile high outside. Finally, the bartender made the call for them.
âSorry, you two,â he said, glancing up at the clock. âWeâre closing up a little early tonight in light of the weather. I hope you donât mind.â
âOh, not at all!â Kaycee replied at once. âDo you have far to travel? Will it be safe?â
Ethanâs lips curved faintly; that was Kaycee â his Kaycee - always concerned about others â as if he needed another reminder of why he loved her, even if she could never know.
Only when the bartender assured her he only lived three blocks away and, as a lifelong New Yorker, he wasnât afraid of a bit of snow, did Kaycee relent, slipping a twenty on the bar. Ethan quietly slid it back, leaving a hundred in its place, making the bartenderâs night.
The thick carpet muffled their footsteps as they headed to the elevators, their shoulders brushing once, then again, as if neither wanted distance, but they were terrified of what closeness could bring.
The elevator chimed on the twenty-third floor. âThis is us,â Kaycee muttered.
âYes,â Ethan said softly. âUs.â
Their rooms were at the very end of the hall, side by side. For two tall people, their strides had never been shorter â knowing when they reached their rooms, the night would be over.
The memory of Miami was still fresh in their minds. Ethan knew he couldnât allow it to happen again, and Kaycee, well, she had made a vow to never feel that sting of humiliation and rejection again.
As they approached the doors, Kaycee paused. The keycard in her hand felt like a rock, and her heart raced in a way she hated to admit he could still cause. Ethan was close â too close - she could smell the faint trace of Scotch mingled with the clean cedar scent of his after-shave.
She closed her eyes, tempted, so tempted to give in. When she opened them, his gaze was fixed on her â unwavering, searching, as if a thousand memories were flooding his mind. A lifetime's worth of missed chances, but none greater than the one standing before him now. Heâd turned her away once and regretted it every day since. He couldnât make that mistake again.
So he kissed her.
It wasnât like the kiss in Miami - it wasn't frantic, desperate, or driven by need. This was deliberate, certain â though no less full of passion. His mouth was on hers, warm and steady, asking, rather than taking.
Her fingers curled into his lapel, every inch of her body set aflame. She had dreamed of this when she slept, and when she was awake, it was all she ever hoped for. It would be so easy to pull him into her room, so easy to give in to what they had been fighting for so long.
But as the kiss deepened, something inside her snapped. She tore herself back, breathless, trembling.
âWe canât,â she whispered, her voice raw. It sounded like she was convincing herself as much as him. âAll the reasons you pushed me away in Miamiâtheyâre still here. Nothingâs changed, andâŚâ
Her eyes glistened, torn between desire and resolve. She stepped back, silently begging him to contradict her, to tell her this was worth it, that theyâd waited long enough.
But he didnât. Ethan didnât reach for her, didnât argue. He merely swallowed, jaw tight, as if agreement was the only way to keep from breaking apart.
âYouâre right,â he whispered, voice pained. âGoodnight, Kaycee.â
âGoodnight,â she replied, through quivering lips. Her hand trembled as she slipped the keycard into the lock. The green light blinked, and she disappeared inside without looking back.
She leaned against the closed door, eyes shut, listening to the muted sound of Ethan doing the same next door.
And then there was only silenceâheavy, restless, silence filled with all the things they hadnât said. Two hearts separated only by a single wall, but they may as well have been miles apart. Longing consumed them both, a hunger they couldnât satisfy, but for tonight, at least, they kept warm with the memory of one stolen goodnight kiss.

Pairing: Tobias x Casey (F!MC) Carrick
Featuring: Samantha Carrick, Pietro (Original Cat)
Rating: General
Words: ~990
Summary: A typical Sunday morning with the Carrick family leads to a magical discovery.
A/N: For @kisstember prompt 9/22: Magical Kisses - written quickly and not edited - be kind :)
The house was suspiciously quiet for a Sunday morning â with a toddler, baby, and an adorable fluffball of a cat under one roof â quiet was a rare thing. Casey was still upstairs, humming softly as she attempted to coax baby Brooke back to sleep. The little angel didnât yet understand that seven oâclock in the morning was far too early for a Sunday. Although, truth be told, their toddler, Samantha, seemed to miss that memo, too.
Tobias sat with a coffee in hand, doing his best to stay awake after his failed attempt to convince Sammy that a cozy family snuggle in bed would be the perfect way to spend the morning. Her chubby little hand grabbed his and led him away. Casey didnât even have to say a word; her grin said it all - No use trying â Sammyâs had you wrapped around her finger since the day she was born.
In the living room, Sammy sat cross-legged on the rug, her curls still askew from sleeping, and her favorite stuffed toy, Bunny, in her hand. But it wasnât Bunny she was talking to. No, it was her other partner in crime that had her attention.
âPietro,â she called, her little voice full of wonder.
The fluffy Balinese cat stretched in the spot of sun he had been napping in, flicking his tail in momentary protest before he rose and padded lazily across the floor, flopping down at Sammyâs feet. Tobias had to laugh. That cat didnât listen to anyone â it looked like Tobias wasnât the only one under the toddlerâs spell.
âHow do you do that, Sammy?â he asked.
She tilted her cherub-like face up at him, brows knitting together. âDo what, Daddy?â
âGet Pietro to listen to you. If I had called him over this early in the morning, heâd hiss at me and go back to sleep.â
âOoohhh!â Sammy giggled with delight. âThatâs easy, Daddy! Magic kisses!â
Tobias lowered his mug â this was a story he had to hear. âMagic... kisses?â
âYes, I give him magic kisses.â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
He tried not to laugh, but the smile gave him away. âReally? And how do these magic kisses work?â
âLike this!â she declared. With exaggerated flair, she leaned forward and planted a kiss right on Pietroâs head, humming a loud âMuuuah!â just to make sure the spell would âholdâ.
The cat barely stirred, but Tobias swore he heard him purr. Maybe there was magic in it after all.
âThere!â Sammy beamed with pride. âAll done. Now, Pietro is sparkly â you see the sparkles, right, Daddy?â
âOh,â he nodded seriously. âOf course!â
âThose sparkles will make him happy forever, so he always listens to me. No one else can give him magic kisses â not yet. Maybe one day Brooke will, too. But sheâs too little. Only big girls can give magic kisses.â
âI see,â Tobias smiled, lowering himself to the rug and wrapping an arm around Samantha, holding his daughter close.
He wondered if thatâs what had done it to him, too â the magic kisses. But, in his case, they didnât belong to Sammy alone. Brooke was still too young to pucker up, but he was no less under her spell. And there was their mother â he changed his life on a dime after one kiss from Casey years before. It's no wonder his daughters also possessed this fairy dust.
Just then, Casey came down the stairs with Brooke in her arms. She settled beside them on the floor. âWhatâs going on here?â
âOh, just a little witchcraft,â Tobias smirked.
Casey raised a brow, amused. âWitchcraft?â
âYes. Sammyâs enchanting Pietro with magic kisses â thatâs how she has him completely under her control.â
âOh, I see,â Casey teased. âAnd where did she learn how to do that?â
âShe didnât learn it,â Tobias said, grinning as he pulled his wife close and kissed the top of her head. âShe inherited it.â
Casey laughed, startling baby Brooke before soothing her again. âSo, she inherited these magical kisses from you?â
âFrom me?â he scoffed. âOh, no. They definitely come from you. I mean, youâve had me under your spell since our very first kiss.â
âMmm-hmm,â Casey protested. âMaybe not our first kiss... I seem to remember it taking a little longer than that.â
âNope,â he said. âIt only looked that way because I had some work to do - I had to change my ways. But there was never any doubt in my mind - the moment you kissed me, I knew Iâd be under your spell for life.â
âDaddy!â Sammy piped up, reminding them she was listening. âIs that true? Does Mommy have magic kisses, too?â
âWell, letâs test that idea,â he said, sitting up straighter. âPietro â come here, boy! Come on â come to Daddy.â
The cat cracked one eye open, glared at him with disdain, and promptly flopped his head back down with a sigh.
Tobiasâs eyes flickered to Casey, who understood what needed to be done. âPietro,â she whispered in a sing-song voice. âCome here, sweet boy! Come on over by Mommy.â
To no oneâs surprise, Pietro immediately hopped up, trotted over, and leapt into Caseyâs lap - nudging Brooke just enough to make room for himself. Casey laughed, stroking his silky fur.
Tobias glanced at Sammy. âWell, sweetheart, what do you think?â
Sammyâs eyes widened as she took it all in. âSo all the girls in our family have magic kisses?â
âWell, everyone except your Grandma Vivian,â Tobias laughed. âThe juryâs out on her.â
âTobias,â Casey scolded, playfully nudging her husband.
Tobias pulled all three of his girls into his arms. âBut every single one of you has magic kisses. And thatâs why your daddy will be enchanted forever.â
Casey met his gaze with a knowing smile, and with Pietro purring and both girls nestled close, they had no doubt that magic was real and that they were blessed beyond measure to live it every single day.

A fic for @kisstember 9/15 Prompt: Kiss My Ass. I had to go with a Hopkins era fic for Ethan & Tobias to do that justice! lol
Fandom: Open Heart (Pre-Series/Hopkins Era)
Featuring: Ethan Ramsey, Tobias Carrick
Rating: Teen
Words: ~558
Summary: Ethan and Tobias are enjoying a night out on the town when Tobias turns on his "never fails" charm - but everyone's luck runs out sometime, doesn't it?
It was a packed night at Benders, the go-to watering hole for the Hopkins med school crowd eager for a night of forgetting exams and clinical rotations. A place where stress dissolved into cheap, watered-down beer and the music blaring from an antique jukebox forced their minds to focus on something other than anatomy⌠well, at least in a clinical sense.
Third-year student Tobias Carrick was a fixture here, and tonight, he was fully in his element - confidently leaning against the bar, beer in hand, and his blue eyes glistening in the low light as he fixed his signature grin on the brunette heâd been tracking from the moment she walked in.
Ethan sat back and sipped his whiskey as he watched the show unfurl before him. Heâd seen Tobiasâs routine more times than he could count, but it never failed to amuse him. And for a moment, things unfolded exactly as they always did.
Her name was Brenda â interest apparent in her hazel eyes from the moment she approached. It didnât take long before she was leaning in closely, coquettish smile firmly in place, giggling with far too much animation at everything he said. Tobiasâs magic was working - she was charmed and he loved every second. He knew the scene by heart â banter, laughter, a touch of flattery, then heâd bring in the closer, and theyâd be heading back to his place. It always worked, and tonight was no different â until it was.
It was just one joke. A mall one, maybe a little offhand, but it landed wrong. He saw it right away and attempted to recover, but instead of smoothing things over, he only dug himself in deeper. Ethan sat back and chuckled. FINALLY - for once the plot had changed and things were getting interesting.
âUnbelievable,â the beauty snapped. âCould you be more full of yourself?â She shoved past him, heels clicking on the warped floorboards as she stormed toward the exit.
If the incident hurt Tobiasâs ego, he sure didnât show it. He called after her, voice warm. âCome on, Brenda, you know I didnât mean anything by it. Come back â Iâll make it worth your while.â
She spun on her heel, fire in her eyes, and spat, âKiss my ass!â
The crowd rippled with laughter. Ethan nearly choked on his drink, grinning as he shook his head. âI always told you this day would come. That olâ Carrick magic wasnât going to last forever.â
Tobias turned back, unbothered, though one brow was arched. âYou doubt me?â He said, raising his glass in a mock-toast. âJust wait, my friend. Sheâll be back. They always come back.â
âYou really believe that?â Ethan snickered.
âNo,â Tobias said, smirk deepening. âI know that. Set a timer â 10 minutes - youâll see. Sheâll be here.â
Yet, for once, Tobias was wrong â it took fifteen minutes.
The door swung open, ushering in a cool breeze and one beautiful brunette. Her cheeks were still flushed, irritation still in her eyes, but she walked straight back to Tobias.
âWell, look whoâs back,â he smiled. âYou missed me after all.â
Brenda crossed her arms. âShut up,â she said, though there was a teasing nature in her voice. âI just figured out a way you could make it up to me.â
âOh, did you?â Tobias replied, his smile, downright scandalous. âDo tellâŚâ
She leaned down and whispered something in his ear; by the widening smile on his lips, it was clear he approved.
Without a word he drained the last of his beer, slapping a twenty onto the bar. Extending his arm to her, he wore the grin of a man who knew he already won. âLetâs go.â He shot Ethan a look over his shoulder, it wordlessly screamed I told you so.
Ethan sighed, tossing back the rest of his whiskey. âOne of these days, Carrick⌠your luckâs going to run out.â
âPerhaps,â Tobias smirked as the woman curled an arm around his. âBut that day is not today.â
Continuing with the @kisstember prompts - I decided to try a fanfic for one of my new obsessions - High Potential. As much as I'd love a Morgan x Karadec kiss - I don't think they're ready yet - so I got a little creative. đ 9/8 Prompt: Kissing a wound or hurt.
It's my first stab at a High Potential fanfic - I hope I did all right. đ
Fandom: High Potential
Pairing: Morgan Gillory x Adam Karadec
Featuring: Lt. Selena Soto
Rating: Teen
Words: ~1,100
Summary: When Karadec is injured on a routine stop, a frazzled Morgan is determined to make it all better - but to what end?
The day had not gone as planned. What should have been a routine visit to a person of interest somehow devolved into this: Detective Karadec crouched on the floor, his back braced against a cold concrete wall, pressing his hand against a nasty-looking scrape that stretched from his elbow to his wrist. It wasnât a life-threatening injury  â no gushing blood, neither an ambulance nor stitches were required. But it was deep enough to sting, painful enough that he clenched his teeth every time the slightest breeze blew over it.
To make matters significantly worse, he wasnât alone. Normally, the rulebook would state that it was better to have your partner nearby when an injury occurred - but the rulebook never met Morgan Gillory â and, right now, Karadec would have given anything to be waiting for help in silence.
Instead, Morgan hovered anxiously at his side. She would have preferred to haul him directly to urgent care - if only the seemingly innocent young woman whoâd been the last to see their victim alive hadnât jumped into their car and sped off, leaving them stranded. Karadec valiantly attempted to stop the perp, which is precisely what led to him being on the floor, wincing, eyes screwed shut as he tried in vain to tune his partner out.
âOK...OK... Itâs not terrible,â Morgan stated, her ankles wobbling precariously as she paced the cracked pavement in five-inch snakeskin heels. âDefinitely not terrible. This is more like⌠mild. Minor, even. Itâs practically cosmetic. If injuries had Yelp ratings, Iâm telling you... this would be a two-star situation. Three max.â
His eyes remained shut as he let out a long, measured sigh, then he shot her a sidelong glare. âMorgan...if itâs really a two-star situation â then, please, just sit down and be quiet. Youâre not helping.â
âYouâre right,â she said, immediately crouching beside him and pressing a napkin against his wound. âSee? Now Iâm helping. Pressure on the wound. Straight out of the first aid textbookâexcept, you know, itâs a napkin, not gauze. And there may be a little soy sauce on it...â
âSoy sauce?â he barked, attempting to yank his arm away, but Morgan held fast.
âOh, relax, big guy! Itâs soy sauce, not anthrax!â She rolled her eyes. âHonestly, how did you end up such a germaphobe? Youâre a detective, not a lab tech. Itâs not like crime scenes are exactly sterile. Maybe you shouldâve been on the cleaning crew, but then again...â
Her words ground to a halt when Karadec hissed through his teeth.
âOh God! I'm sorry! Too much pressure?â she blurted, easing her hand. âBut youâre fine. Totally fine. I mean, you look a little pale, but I think that's just you. Truth is â you need to get out a little more. But youâre not gonna faint, are you? Whatever you do, donât faint, because Iâm bad with fainting. I usually just yell at them to wake up, which is probably not the most effective medical advice, but...â
âMorgan!â His voice came out strong despite the pain, and she was startled silent - his exact intention - too bad it only lasted two seconds.
âWhat do you want me to do? Because I am trying here. Do you want water?â She rifled through her purse. âOr a snack? I think I have Mentos. Or Altoids, maybe...â
âMorgan,â he repeated, the sound half-laugh, half-plea. âNone of that is useful.â
âUseful,â she nodded. âRight! Got it! I need to do something... useful.â Working on pure muscle memory and without pausing to think, she leaned in and pressed a quick kiss on his arm, just above the scrape on his elbow. âThere!â She smiled with satisfaction. âA boo-boo kiss. Kissed it all better! A classic remedy.â
Karadec froze - he went absolutely stiff. With his ears red, spine locked against the wall, he felt his breath catch in his chest. His eyes darted left - right - anywhere except at Morgan. For one brief, horrifying moment, he was confident heâd forgotten how to speak - then, he snapped.
âYouâwhatâWHY???!!!! Why would you do that!â
Morgan threw up her hands. âBecause you told me to do something useful! And for the record, boo-boo kisses are backed by science. Iâve used them on my kid for years â though the older two have begged me to stop for a while now - but they work! Comfort. Endorphins. They help - look it up.â
Karadec groaned, dragging a hand over his face. âMorgan, I am not your child, and that isnât helping me! That was... it was completely inappropriate.â
âOh, listen, buster!â She said, âI was trying to help! Itâs not like I...â but the sounds of footsteps echoing down the alley cut her off.
âOh, thank God!â Karadac sighed with relief as Lieutenant Soto approached, a medic at her side.
"What have we got going on here?" She asked.
"He's hurt," Morgan said, springing back, she gazed at him. "But now, youâre in good hands. Iâll, uh, go make sure no one hot-wires this car. Wouldnât want that to happen twice in one day!â And before anyone could stop her, she was gone.
Selena crouched as the medic began examining Karadecâs arm. Her eyes flicked from the wound to his face, then down the alley where Morgan had fled. A slow smile tugged at her lips.
âYouâre face is red,â she observed.
âIâm injured,â he countered flatly.
âMm-hm.â Her smirk deepened. âFunny - Iâve seen you with worse, but you never blushed like a teenager.â
Karadec began to sputter. âWhy donât you try having Morgan hovering over you while you're injured, then tell me how you handle it?â
Selena chuckled under her breath. âThought so. Sheâs under your skin, Detective.â
Karadec just shook his head. âSheâs under everyoneâs skin â thatâs her speciality â isnât it?â
âIf it is," Selena smirked, "sheâs very good at her job.â
The medic finished the bandage with a quick tug, and Karadec flexed his hand to test it before clearing his throat.
âQuick question,â he muttered to the medic. âIf someone kisses a boo-booâthat wonât cause gangrene or anything, right?â
The medic froze â and Selenaâs eyes went wide.
âHush,â Karadec snapped before either of them could say more. âNever mind â forget I said anything - Iâll Google it later.â
He pushed himself to his feet and shook his head as he made his way to the car.
âThis is my life now,â he groaned. And he was right - it was. He had the same nitty-gritty existence, only now it was punctuated with pink sequins, th sound of smacking bubble gum, and the occasional boo-boo kiss. He acted like it mortified him, and in many ways, it did - but deep down, in the place heâd never confess out loud, he knew the truth: if given the chance, he wouldnât change a single thing.
All right, I'm tagging my PERMA folks - though I'm not sure if you know or care about High Potential - lol. I'm not sure I'll be writing any more for them, but if you don't want to be tagged (if I do), just let me know. :)
Another fic for @kisstember 's 9/8 prompt: drunken kisses. I've REALLY been missing Tobias & Casey, so this made me happy! :)
Book: Open Heart (Post Series)
Pairing: Tobias Carrick x Casey (F!MC)
Featuring: Ethan Ramsey, Bryce Lahela, Sienna Trinh, Jackie Varma, Aurora Emery
Rating: Teen
Words: ~1,030
Summary: A pub crawl in Boston leads to all sorts of bets & mayhem.
Theyâd been looking forward to this night for weeks. Pub crawls were practically a rite of passage for medical residents in Boston, and both Tobias and Casey had done their fair share back in the day. But since their residencies were separated by nearly a decade, they'd never experienced one together. And after a night of playful ribbing over who had handled it best, Bryce suggested the only way to really find out - and that's how this evening was planned.
The first stop on the crawl was a cozy Irish bar tucked in a quiet little street in Back Bay, the kind of place with Guinness signs in the windows and dark wood that gleamed under dim, barely there lights. Tobias gallantly held the door open for his wife, his face lighting up as his eyes traced her curves, barely hidden under her burgundy boucle dress. That hadn't gone unnoticed.
âWhat are you doing, Dr. Carrick?â she asked, lashes fluttering with mock innocence.
âIâm checking out the hottest woman in the bar,â he drawled. âKind of hoping Iâll get lucky and take her home tonight.â Â
âOh, really?â She teased, running her finger over the stubble on his jaw. âI hear sheâs a sure thing. Are you sure you donât want more of a... challenge? The redhead at the jukebox looks promising, too.â
He glanced over his shoulder, giving a solemn nod. âNot bad,â he admitted, then turned back, voice dropping. âBut why go for silver when Iâve already got gold?â
He leaned in, their lips a whisper apart, when a swinging door and a blast of cold air pulled their attention.
âJesus, are you two at it already?â Ethan groaned, shaking snow from his coat and placing it on the back of a stool. "I knew I shouldâve stayed home with my Macallan.â
âHere, here!â Jackie chimed in, biting into a Bavarian pretzel. âBut on an up note, these two will make me queasy long before the tequila does â so it could save me some money.â
âReally?â Tobias laughed, motioning to the bartender to bring a fresh round.
âReally,â Sienna grinned. âHow about a new rule tonight? You two have to keep it PG for once. PG-13 if you absolutely must, but nothing beyond that.â
âYeah, right!â Bryce chuckled, lifting a fresh pint to his lips. âThey wouldnât make it an hour.â
âWhat?â Casey frowned. âYou really donât think we can do it?â
âOh, I know you canât,â Jackie declared.
Bryce smirked, peeling a twenty from his wallet. âLetâs put our money where our mouths are. After all, we all know where their mouths will be...â
Tobias raised a brow. âYou people act like weâre animals! Weâre an old married couple now, have a baby at home... we know a thing or two about restraint.â
Aurora, who had been sipping her beer quietly, laughed. âIf you knew a thing or two about restraint, you wouldnât have a baby at home.â
âHey,â Ethan deadpanned. âLeave my goddaughter out of this â Thatâs the only thing Carrickâs ever done right.â
Tobias leaned down to whisper something in Caseyâs ear, and she flushed pink â a grin stretching on her lips as her handsome husband kissed her temple â not even her lips - but their friends were groaning.
âPoolâs open,â Bryce reminded. âTwenty bucks says theyâll be making baby number two within the hour.â
âHopefully not in our line of sight,â Jackie groused.
~~~~~
They headed to bar number two, several blocks away. A loud sports bar with dozens of TVs scattered across the walls, one highlighting every local team and beyond. They squeezed into a wooden booth, shouting to hear each other over the noise.
Casey sipped her drink slowly, aware of the eyes on them and the growing pot of cash â she was determined to keep temptation at bay. But Tobias was less restrained. His arm was draped over her, his thumb tracing patterns under the shoulder of her dress. It only took one more whisky, then his grin turned wolfish.
âYou promised to behave,â she reminded him, though the sparkle in her eyes betrayed her amusement.
âI have behaved,â he insisted, his gaze dipping to her neckline before flicking up to meet her eyes again. âBut itâs hard, baby. So⌠hard.â
Casey snorted mid-sip, nearly choking on her beer as Jackie smacked the table. âChrist almighty! Do you two even hear yourselves?â
âYou brought this on yourselves,â Casey shot back, laughing. âTrying to stop us from being usâit was always going to lead to pent-up depravity.â
âItâs been an hour!â Jackie wailed. âNot even an hour!â
âExactly,â Tobias agreed, his eyes glazed over, whisky still lingering on his tongue. âAnd I wonât stand for this cruel and unusual punishment anymore.â
Casey slammed her empty shot glass on the table, wiping her lip with the back of her hand. âHear, hear!â she cheered, her grin wide, tipsy delight radiating from her as she wrapped her arms around her husbandâs neck.
Before anyone could stop them, Tobias pulled her in, their mouths crashing in a kiss that was far too hungry, far too naughty for public consumption. It wasnât neat - it was searing, lips crashing, teeth grazing, tongues tangled with an urgency that was only fueled by too many drinks and too many moments pretending they could keep their hands off each other. Casey laughed into his mouth, and he swallowed the sound, one hand sliding into her hair, the other braced against the small of her back. They showed no sign of stopping, deepening until it was less of a kiss and more breathless, shamelessly indulgent claim. Mine â all mine.
When they finally broke apart, both breathless and laughing, the table erupted in groans and scattered applause.
âAll right! Pay up,â Bryce beamed, extending a hand. Tobias shoved a bill at him without looking.
Casey pulled back, with a mock scowl. âWe lost,â she pouted. Â
Tobias shrugged, eyes sparkling. âWell worth it,â he grinned, sliding an arm around her waist and bending her back right there in the booth, kissing her again with drunken abandon.
Their friends groaned in unison.
âGod help us,â Jackie muttered. âHow many more pubs do we have to hit?â
âThree,â Ethan sighed, lifting his glass. âItâs going to be a very long night.â
Another fic for @kisstember 's 9/1 prompt: kissing under the stars. This time, the smooches go to my favorite post-apocalyptic throuple, Eli, Zoe & Troy. đ
Fandom: Wake the Dead (Playchoices)
Characters: Eli Sipes x Zoe Rivera (F!MC) x Troy Hassan
Rating: Teen
Words: ~800
Summary: Zoe loves kissing under the stars - but tonight that leads to mayhem - and perhaps a miracle or two, too!
The deck creaked beneath Zoeâs feet as she stepped outside, lifting her eyes toward the night sky. The stars were burning bright tonight, glistening like a thousand flecks of gold falling across a tar-black sky. The silence echoed around her, and for a moment, she thought they were shrinking just for her. She cherished moments like this; it's what carried her through the hard times, which she knew were always lurking around every corner.
The peaceful interlude was interrupted when footsteps sounded behind her, but she didnât need to turn. She knew Eliâs stride as well as she knew her own heartbeat. He had yet to say a word when the bushes rustled below, and he moved protectively in front of her. Zoe rolled her eyes. She could take care of herself , and sheâd be sure to remind him of that later, but she had to admit, his presence did calm her in ways she could never fully explain.
They surveyed the area closely, confident their culprit was nabbed when a tiny raccoon scurried away. With the âthreatâ gone, Eli took a step away, but Zoe had other plans. With a sparkle in her eye and an impish grin on her lips, she clutched Eliâs tattered shirt with her fists and pulled him close. Â
âWhat are you...â
The words had barely escaped him when her lips crashed into his â soft, warm, and possessive â they claimed him in a way only she knew how to do. His hand quickly found her waist. Resistance was futile, and the two of them were absorbed by the tender moment. But it didnât last long. The sound of crunching leaves startled them, and they reached for their bows with practiced ease. But once again, it was a friendly intruder.
âWell, well, well,â Troy drawled, the cocky tone in his voice leaving no question that it was him.
Zoe laughed without letting Eli go. âHello, Troy.â
Troy leaned against the railing, the moonlight glistening off his signature grin. He eyed them up and down judgmentally before he continued.
âSo, what have I stumbled upon? You two - locking lips under the stars like youâre the stars of some cheesy, post-apocalyptic romance, while I stand here â my lips tragically alone. Deserted. Sad. Iâm left to wander this zombie-infested wasteland, unloved and unwanted....â Â
Eli rolled his eyes as Zoe giggled, âTroy, please. You  know I canât resist kissing under the stars... and your lips... well, they just werenât here when they were needed.â Â
âWait a second,â Eli groaned. âAre you saying I was kissed solely out of... convenience?â
âOf course not, sweetheart,â Zoe started, but Troy cut in, clutching his chest dramatically.
âEli, donât you dare complain! I should have expected it - people warned me. In every throuple, one poor soul gets left out in the cold, and, apparently, tonight â thatâs me. Poor, pathetic me, standing here while the two people who are supposed to love me....â
âOh, for fuckâs sake!â Eli grabbed the front of Troyâs jacket and yanked him into a fiery kiss â a kiss filled with such passion that Troyâs toes curled, and with it, a miracle occurred â he rendered Troy Hassan speechless. Â
When Eli pulled back, Troy blinked in stunned silence.
âWow!" Zoe exclaimed. âIt looks like Iâm not the only one who canât resist kissing under the stars.â
âNo,â Eli muttered, fighting the faintest smirk. âI just wanted to shut him up.â
"Well, you did that!" She grinned. "And you've left Troy speechless - that qualifies as a miracle."
Troy finally came to, still dazed but grinning. âWell, congratulations, Eli. You managed the impossible. But for the record,â he looped an arm around each of them and pulled them close, âthe best kisses under the stars are when all three of us are involved.â
Zoe laughed softly, leaning in as all their lips found each others. âI have to admit, you're right on that one, Troy."
âYeah,â Eli chuckled. âI have to agree as well."
âWow!â Zoe exclaimed, searching the night sky. âThose must be magical stars! Eli left Troy speechless, and the three of us are in agreement! How often does that happen?"
"Pretty much never," Troy concurred. "But - even though we're in agreement - I think the three of us should kiss again - you know, just to prove the theory, once and for all."
"Of course," Zoe cooed. "We wouldn't want to leave anything that important to chance."
Eli rolled his eyes again - even though he was clearly unbothered. "Oh, fine," he scoffed. "But only for research purposes - and if the two of you tell the others I've gone soft - I'll never kiss either of you again."
"As if you could resist," Zoe said, locking lips with Eli once more.
"She's got you there, Sipes," Troy laughed.
Their lips met again, this time slower, more deliberate, as all three found themselves lost in the warmth between them. The deck creaked beneath their weight, and the forest echoed around them.
"Why don't we move this inside?" Zoe beamed - and there was no disagreement. The night, it seemed, had only just begun.
I've missed writing, but I've been stumped over what to write about. So, I'm really grateful to @kisstember for giving me a little inspiration. I'm going to try to write a little fic for each of their prompts this month, after all, what's more fun than kissing?
Pairing: It's complicated :)
Characters: Ethan Ramsey, Tobias Carrick, Kaycee (F!MC), Reggie
Rating: Teen
Words: ~1,000
Summary: Most days, Kaycee can keep her feelings for Ethan under control - but tonight isnât one of them. Watching a beautiful woman flirt with him at Donahueâs while she drowns her sorrows is bad enough. But then, something unexpected happensâŚ
A/N: This is not part of my HC. It takes place during Open Heart Book 2, following Ethan's trip to the Amazon and preceding the chemical attack. @kisstember 9/1 Prompt: Surprise Kiss
Donahueâs was bustling one late autumn night - dark and crowded, the buzz of dozens of conversations was enough to drown out any thoughts that couldnât escape oneâs mind - that was exactly what Kaycee had been hoping for when she stepped inside.
It almost worked.
She lifted her glass, motioning toward Reggie, who strolled over with his usual swagger.
âAnother drink, my friend?â He asked with a sympathetic smile. âI feel like I should ask how youâre getting home before I agree to that.â
Kaycee glanced up from under her bangs with an air of indignation that quickly melted to amusement. âReally, this is Boston. Itâs not like I'll be driving home,â she scoffed, shooting a pointed look toward Ethan Ramsey, seated directly across the bar. âBesides,â she shrugged, âwe canât all be pompous assholes who own three luxury cars.â
âOuch,â a smooth voice shot out beside her - his tone dripping with glee.
âSpeaking of pompous assholes,â Kaycee sighed.
Tobias Carrick cleared his throat, ignoring her jab. âGet the lady another drink, Reg,â he winked. âIâll take responsibility for her safety.â
That got Kayceeâs attention. Her head flung back, and her laughter rang out above the din. âYou... responsibility... safety?â she stammered. âPlease, Reggie. Tell me you're not falling for that.â
Reggie snorted, already reaching for a fresh glass. âFall for it? Not a chance. But if Dr. Carrickâs volunteering to be your knight in shining armor, Iâm making this one a double. Youâll need it.â
With a fresh drink before her, Kaycee settled in. âSo, what are you doing here tonight, Carrick?â
âSame thing as you,â he shrugged. âKilling time. Maybe hoping for some decent conversation.â
That's when Kayceeâs eyes, traitorous as ever, drifted across the bar where Ethan stood with that posture she knew all too well: back straight as could be, composed, as if the chaos in the room had no effect on him.
He was listening politely to a woman Kaycee didnât recognize - she was beautiful with red lips, long, jet-black hair, and a laugh that seemed too animated, given the company she was keeping. Every few seconds, her hand brushed his arm, and while he seemed to be tolerating it more than enjoying it, Kaycee noted he wasnât exactly walking away, either.
âKaycee... Kaycee.â Tobias waved a hand in front of her face, then followed her gaze. Understanding flickering in his eyes. âChrist, K,â he muttered. â Are you still hung up on him?â
Words were unnecessary as her head snapped toward him, eyes narrowed to tiny slits.
âWhat?â he leaned in, his tone half-amused, half-exasperated. âYou canât keep sulking around like this - especially over Ramsey. Personally, I think the guyâs lost his damn mind letting you go. But you? Youâre too young, too beautiful, and too special to keep wallowing like this. Either make your move or move on.â
âDo you think I like this?â She shot back with a small, brittle laugh. âIâve tried moving on, believe me.â
âDoesnât look like it from where I'm standing,â Tobias replied, tipping back his glass but never taking his eyes off her. âYouâve been staring at him like a love-sick puppy all night. Thatâs not what âmoved onâ looks like, sweetheart. So I sayâmake a move.â
âPlease,â she bristled. âLeave me with some dignity. Ethanâs made it more than clear â he doesnât want me.â
âNah,â Tobias scoffed, draping his arm lazily across the back of her stool, the picture of confidence. âHe wants youâheâs just a moron.â
âHe does not,â she insisted, brusquely knocking Tobiasâs arm back to his side.
âReally?â he leaned closer, voice dropping conspiratorially. âBecause he hasnât managed to keep his eyes off you for the last five minutes.â
âWhat?â she blinked, heart racing.
âDonât look now,â he smirked, âbut that manâs going to burn a hole right through your skull any second now.â
âI am not,â he replied, a wicked thought curling into a devious smile. âYou want him back? Then play along.â
Before Kaycee could ask what he meant, his hand slid to the back of her neck - steady, warm, unexpectedly gentle - and then his mouth was on hers.
âMmmh!â she protested, though not as fiercely as either of them would have expected.
The kiss was brazen, bold, nothing like the hesitant but passionate ones she had shared with Ethan so many times before. This was different - Tobias kissed her as though daring her to stop, but she never did. The heat of it left her head spinning, caught between the shock and dangerous thrill of it all.
And then, just as quickly, he pulled away, eyes glistening with mischief. Kayceeâs lips tingled; she could hardly catch her breath. âWhat... what was that?â She demanded.
Tobias didnât answer her right away, but his grin sharpened when he found Ethan across the bar - standing stiff as a board, his face flushed, and his jaw locked so tight it was a wonder he didnât crack a tooth. He made a pitiful attempt at composure, pretending to focus elsewhere before muttering something to the raven-haired woman at his side and slipping away.
A low, satisfied laugh rumbled in Tobiasâs chest. He didnât need years of training to diagnose this scene: Dr. Ramsey was seething, and Tobias was savoring every second.
âThat,â Tobias said, downing the rest of his drink in one smooth swallow, âwill have Dr. Ramsey pounding on your door before the nightâs over.â
He rose from his stool, straightening his jacket with infuriating nonchalance. âAnd one day - when Iâm best man at your wedding?â he added with a wink. âThisâll be my favorite part of the toast. You're welcome.â
With that, Tobias slipped into the crowd, leaving Kaycee breathless in his wake. She reached for her purse, intent on settling her tab and escaping as fast as she could, when her heart lurched.
Because walking toward her â eyes on fire, stride purposeful, and every inch the man she could never quite let go of - was none other than Ethan Ramsey.
I'm not sure how much longer I'll be getting commissions for my Choices MCs, but I'm not quite ready to let go of these two yet. When I was talking to Ainna, I realized that I never did a pregnancy for my favorite OTP, and I needed to change that immediately!
While my masterlist is a mess (and I need to fix that), this is a list of most of my Tobias & Casey Wedding & Baby Stories.
It was always intoxicating to watch Boston come back to life when the dreary days of winter finally melted away. After months of home confinement, city dwellers looked for any excuse to be outdoors - and who could blame them? With birds singing overhead, ducklings back at The Pond, and flowers blooming everywhere, spring fever became Dr. Tobias Carrickâs most common diagnosisâone he wasn't immune to himself.
This was the time of year when he most appreciated the hospital's proximity to Boston Common, and if the sun was shining, you could be sure heâd be there; today was no exception. As he took in nature's rebirth all around him, he couldn't help but think of an impending birth much closer to homeâand that was all the inspiration he needed.
It took just a quick stop at a Beacon Hill maternity boutique to pick up the floral dress Casey had been eyeing, a call to a photojournalist friend, and, just like that, a springtime maternity shoot had been put in motion.
When the day arrived, you would have thought Tobias had called in a favor with Mother Nature; there couldn't have been nicer weather, a bluer sky, or a more attentive husband.
The photographer was inconspicuous, eager to catch every tender moment. Like when Tobias knelt among the flowers, his hands resting gently on the curve of Caseyâs belly, his thumbs gently rubbing the spot he kissed just moments before.
âDid she kick again?â he asked softly, looking up with that look of wonder that never seemed to leave his face, despite already being the father of a toddler and a doctor, to boot.
Casey smiled in return. âThey did. I think the baby knows your voice - but we don't know if it's a she, darling."
âShe better,â he insisted, pressing another kiss to her belly. âBecause sheâs going to be hearing a lot of it.â
Casey ran her fingers through his hair, her eyes filled with love. âYouâre such a good dad. I'm sure Sammy is going to tell her little sister or brother just how amazing you are."
âWell, it's easy to do with you at my side,â he whispered. "Our little girls are so lucky to have you as their mom."
"We're all lucky to have each other," she said, as he rose to his feet. "I can't wait until this little one is here, so they can feel it, too."
I came across this photo by chance, and I immediately thought of the Carrick's cat, Pietro. I haven't been able to get this silly story out of my head, and finally got to write it down! I hope it brings some smiles!
Book: Open Heart (Post-Series)
Pairing: Tobias x Casey Carrick (F!MC)
Featuring: Pietro - (Original Cat)
Rating: Teen
Words: ~1,600
Summary: The Carricks are enjoying a cozy family morning when the doorbell rings and a scandal ensues. Will it be a cat-astrophe?
A/N: Regarding the photo, I thought it was funny that the adult cat on the right has a smug little expression (a la Tobias) and the other adult cat is blonde ( a la Casey!) đđ
After trying to finish this for over a week, I gave up on editing. So please forgive any blemishes. :)
It was a typical, lazy Saturday morning in the Carrick home. Tobias was cleaning up the remains of their pancake breakfast, while Casey finished her tea on the couch in the adjacent parlor. Her hand absentmindedly stroked her swollen belly as she watched little Samantha belt out what was sure to be a Grammy-winning performance of "I'm a Little Teapot" with her favorite teddy bear, Mr. Wiggly. It was the picture of domestic bliss - so peaceful, so idyllic - that no one could have imagined they'd be thrust into the center of an illicit paternity scandal by day's end. But as the doorbell rang⌠that was precisely what was about to happen.
Tobias entered the room, drying his hands on a dish towel. "Are you expecting someone?" he asked.
"Nope," Casey replied, already waddling toward the door with her six-month bump leading the way. "But I swear if it's a salesperson or someone trying to convert me, I'm going to let the hormones take control."
Tobias stifled a laugh as Sammy clung to his leg, then Casey opened the door to reveal a vaguely familiar middle-aged woman. Her greying curls were neatly tucked under a wide-brimmed hat that perfectly matched her jewel-toned paisley dress. When she spoke, it was clear that her energy was just as vibrant as her attire.
"Good Morning," she chirped, waltzing past Casey and into the foyer as if they were lifelong friends.
Bewildered, Casey took a step back. "Good morning. Uhm, can I help you?"
"Yes. As a matter of fact, you can," The woman said, placing a bedazzled magenta folder on a side table with a flourish. "My name is Ursula. I live two townhomes away, and I thought it was about time for us to become better acquainted. We are about to be family, after all.â Â
Casey arched a brow. "Uh â I'm sorry â but what?"Â
Tobias stepped to Casey's side as Ursula reached into the folder and pulled out a photo with dramatic flair. She handed it to Casey, and Tobias peered over her shoulder to find a peculiar-looking... sonogram?
Tobias looked at Casey anxiously, then tapped the photo in his hand. "What's this about?" he asked, his patience wearing thin.
"Thatâs Persephone!" Ursula proclaimed with pride. "Well, at least it's her sonogram. And those six adorable blobs are her little babies. She's due in just a matter of weeks now!"
Caseyâs brow furrowed as she attempted to make sense of things. âUh...congratulations?"
"Thank you!" Ursula beamed. "But the congratulations aren't all mine, they're yours, too. After all, we're all about to be grandparents!"
âGrandparents?â she asked, completely befuddled.
âYes. Grandparents. After all, your Pietro is the father of Persephoneâs kitties.â
"Pietro?" Casey blinked. "Our cat, Pietro?"
"Yes! Your handsome little Lothario knocked up my darling Persephone."
Casey turned toward the window ledge, where Pietro lay licking himself with all the nonchalance of a man who definitely wasn't concerned about the specter of impending fatherhood.
"Maâam,â Casey said politely. âIâm afraid thatâs impossible. Pietro is a house cat. He never goes outside â I mean â he doesnât even like fresh air. There is no way he could have done... this... Â to Persephone.â
She waited for Ursula to retort, but the only sound in the room was that of Tobias nervously clearing his throat.
âTobias?â Casey questioned, eyes narrowing.
âOkay,â he winced. âSo, funny story. Itâs possible â theoretically - that Pietro may have gotten out of the house one morning recently.â
âWhat?â
âI found him wandering in the yard before you and Sammy came back from her dance class. I never told you because I didnât want to stress you out,â he added sheepishly. âThat was the morning you had been crying because I picked up strawberry jam instead of raspberry preserves.â
âWell, that makes perfect sense,â Ursual interrupted. âRaspberry preserves are far superior! Persephone and I would never settle for strawberry jam!â Â
âUh, yeah...â Tobias stammered - wondering if he had been transported to the Twilight Zone. âBut as I was saying...Pietro made it back home safely. I thought no harm, no foul. I didnât tell you because itâs my job to keep my pregnant wife happy, and I didnât want to worry you over nothing.â
Casey rubbed her temples as a headache began to brew.
âHe seemed fine afterwards, Case,â Tobias protested.
âOf course,â Ursula injected, unfazed by the domestic tension. âHe was fine, he had his fun, but the same couldnât be said for my beloved Persephone! In any case, obviously, I could never part with any of her precious little angels. So I will be keeping them. Iâm sure we can agree on a fair settlement for kitten support. Wet food is preferredâorganic, of course. And I only use Pretty Litter. We could work out regular visitation if your schedules allow.â She eyed Sammy, then Caseyâs belly. âI mean, you do seem to have your hands full already.â
Tobias and Casey were slack-jawed. Too dumbfounded to address their neighborâs apparent jab.
âKitten support?â Casey groaned.
âVisitation?â Tobias added.
âYes. I created spreadsheets, which you can find in the folder; however, we should consider creating a shared Google calendar instead. Iâve already created a birth plan with Persephoneâs veterinarian â and itâs lovely! There will be soothing harp concertos playing during labor, and I think it would be best if Pietro remained at home. I donât think his presence would bring any comfort to my girl.â
Casey sank onto the decorative bench that lined the wall â the one she had told Sammy was never to be sat on; it was just there to look pretty, but this â this was a special occasion.
As if on cue, the previously unbothered Pietro pounced onto the floor from his throne and walked to the center of the foyer with a detached air of indifference. He circled the spot where the sun beamed in through the decorative window above the door, and then he plopped on the floor with a big yawn.
âAll right. Where are the hidden cameras?â Casey asked. âIs this some weird TikTok trend Iâm not aware of? Something where we trick very pregnant ladies. Because this canât be real.â
âOh, Iâm afraid it is, darling,â Ursula grinned. âWhile I understand having grandchildren the same age as your children might be difficult for you, I think with the right amount of therapy, weâll all survive â no, flourish!â
âOh, therapy is definitely needed,â Tobias agreed.
âVery well!â Ursula stated, placing the garish folder in Tobiasâs hands. âIâm sure the two of you will need some time to look over the papers and discuss. We can talk again tomorrow. Ta-ta!â
Casey wasnât wasting any time; she turned to Tobias â glaring. He looked over his shoulder, unable to fathom that look could be for him.
âWhat?â He said, a little defensive. âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âWhy?â She said, rising to her feet. âBecause this is your fault! Your son is apparently just...like..you.â Â
âExcuse me?â He squinted. âI donât think I like what youâre implying.â
They both looked at Sammy, who was blissfully shoving crushed goldfish crackers into Mr. Wigglyâs mouth. Pietro was quick at her feet to lick the mess up. Casey stepped closer to Tobias, her voice low.
âPietro escapes for twenty minutes â twenty minutes â and he knocks someone up!â Casey pointed to her own belly, and Tobias raised his hands.
âHey! Our baby was planned,â he said, resting his hand on Caseyâs bump. âI mean â at least this one was. And my feral tomcat days are ancient history.â
âAh!â She said, triumphantly jabbing his chest. âBut you admit you were a feral tomcat!â
He opened his mouth, closed it quickly, and smirked. âI think Iâm going to plead the fifth.â
âLook,â he said, kissing Caseyâs cheek. âYou domesticated me, and maybe this is just what Pietro needs. Iâve seen Persephone, sheâs a feisty little thing â and quite a beauty â just like you. I think sheâll make an honorable cat out of Pietro.â
âMmhh,â Casey hummed. âPerhaps, but after this, you and Pietro are both getting fixed. The virility of the men in this family is nothing to be trifled with.â
âWe can go to different doctors, though, right?â He asked nervously.
Casey had to laugh at the absurdity of it all. âI donât know,â she shrugged. âYou may want to talk to Ursula. She probably already has it scheduled as part of Persephoneâs post-partum plan.â
~~~~~
A month later, the kittens were born - all six of them. And there was no denying they were Pietroâs. They looked just like him, down to the permanently unimpressed expressions fixed on their tiny faces. Â
Samantha was obsessed with them. Every morning, sheâd pull the photo Tobias had taped to the fridge and point to a different cat, declaring. âI want that one!â
But Ursula held firm. âSamantha. Theyâre Persephoneâs babies. They stay with Persephone.â
When Sammy pouted, Tobias decided to lean fully into the insane drama.
âWell,â he said. âI did have my lawyer, an official kitten support agreement. Pietro has not missed a payment, and if necessary, Iâll pursue legal visitation.â
âAbsolutely not,â Casey said, turning around in horror. âWe are not hosting six kittens in this house!â
Ursula exhaled a deep sigh. âFine. Miss Sammy and Pietro can visit the kittens at my place once per week... as long as the visits are supervised.â
Tobias nodded as he sipped his coffee. âFine. But Persephone is the one who will need supervision. Iâve been watching her â she canât keep her paws off of Pietro. She finds him irresistible, and we donât want to end up with more mouths to feed.â
âTobias!â Casey scolded with a laugh. But he just winked.
âWhat can I say, dear? Like father, like feline.â
