Album review: "Atum," part one, Smashing Pumpkins (Nov. 15, 2022) It Could Have Been Epic When I think of The Smashing Pumpkins, I think of epic music - huge-sounding guitars and drums, searing guitar solos and well-timed effusions of sound from Billy Corgan's sometimes nasally, sometimes growly voice. When I listen to Atum, for an album that's supposed to be the first part of a rock opera and a continuation of a classic like Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, no less, I don't hear anything that approaches the epic. I hear a few truly good songs, a few potentially good songs that are hampered by either poor production choices or poor arrangement choices and a few that should have never seen the light of day. First the good: - The Good in Goodbye. I don't care for the 40 seconds of sound before getting into the actual song, but once the drums kick in, the song kicks. This is, sadly, the only song that Jimmy Chamberlain, legit one of the best drummers in rock and roll today, gets to shine fully, and even on this song, it feels slightly restrained compared to his previous work, and if that is the case, I truly don't understand the approach. The song also has a killer guitar solo, but again, while top-notch and better than most guitar solos you'll hear in alternative rock these days, it's less compelling than nearly all the solos on Siamese Dream and Gish, as if Corgan was like, "Fine, here's a little guitar solo for our fans. Can I play with my synth toys now?" Production-wise, this song and the whole album are too "perfect." This record, and Cyr and Shiny and Oh So Bright are quantized all to hell, and they sound like it. The brilliance of the band's first three records were that they weren't quantized at all. They were big and messy, and that's what gave them character ... (cont.)
