Looking back on it, Jenna would say that her life has been little more than a series of cliches. Like tropes made a reality. Confused teenage girl dating boys because she’s “supposed to,” lesbian discovering her sexuality through experimentation in college, scared girl coming out to her conservative republican parents. She admits there’s a reason for the cliches, but she feels like she blends into the background because of them.

How she met Casey feels like just as much of a cliche as the rest of them.

“I’m not sure she likes me,” Sarah says, taking a tiny step backward as Jenna turns around with their newborn daughter in her arms.

“Are you kidding? She’s only a few days old; she doesn’t like or dislike anyone yet.”

Still, Sarah is unsure. She has tried to hold Amara a few times, but Amara always ends up screaming her head off and nearly making Sarah deaf. In Jenna’s arms, however, Amara is the perfect angel.

Jenna sighs. “Maybe she smells fear or something. Like a cat.”

“Cats can smell fear?” Sarah raises an eyebrow.

“Yeah, they do, now shut up and take our daughter.”
