This room always gets to me. So simple and so photogenic! Without much further ado, welcome to the Captain's Quarters, a very special room for the little ones.

The cover shot of the summer issue of Detroit Home Magazine, this space was turned into the perfect playroom, always keeping in mind    the nautical theme maintained throughout the entire house.

The combination of white and navy blue, as well as textures like brick and wood, add charm to this vintage, open-sea atmosphere. Also every element of this space has been adapted from the boating world to fit naturally into the room. 

Notice the water-proof light fixtures and boat-grade furniture handles--  the real deal.

As promised, we continue to spotlight our 'Grosse Ile' project that has just been awarded the cover of Detroit Home Magazine. Today, we talk about one of my favorite spaces of this home, the great 'great room'.

In yesterday's entry, I explained how this home used to be half the size and how we designed its addition. This room is at the heart of the house, placed right where the original construction ended and the addition began. As the picture above shows, the great room leads to a beautiful stainless-steel kitchen with dual-island.

What happens when the entire family gets together and all of the sudden you have to seat 25+ relatives? 

Just like one does during the summer with that sweet red convertible (don't we all want one?), pulling the top down and letting the fun flow; this 'great room' is fully convertible into a large dining room capable of accommodating such numbers.  

Let's see how:

Here we see the bar table in its original position. This wood table has a custom-made steel base that can be unattached and rotated into a lower position, converting into a fully functional (and easy to move) dining table. This is step 1.

Next, we join both of these end tables (there's two) and bump them into the bar table, greatly increasing the functionality and size of it.

Once the table is assembled, the two banquettes can be arranged at each side of the table, offering a fun and different seating option. With some extra chairs at each side, this is ready for a fun family night (or weekend!).

I personally love this 'convertible' space, so functional and fun. It brings the original construction and the addition together in harmony, as well as simply being a naturally versatile space for family gatherings.

Detroit Home Magazine’ summer issue just hit the stands and to my surprise and sheer excitement, it’s the first time we made the cover. We are so happy and so honored that we can share one of our favorite projects with everyone.  After all, it is not every day that we get to see this a sight like the one above.

What I personally love about this project, besides that ‘Great Lakes-feel’ unique to Michigan and the privilege of working with such a great family, is the journey behind this great home and its owners. They first brought me on board many years ago to design their Birmingham home. Years later, as they decided to make the move towards Grosse Ile, again I had the pleasure of getting the call. As their family grew in numbers, and the need for more space was inevitable, we started working together a third time. That’s what is so fab about the project, although I had already designed their home in the past, the need for more space and the consideration of an addition, made this a completely different game, allowing for beautiful and functional spaces. That was my greatest concern, creating new spaces that felt fresh and were functional, but at the same time kept the feel they loved so much from the original home. The addition had to feel like a natural extension of the established space, and sometimes that’s easier said than done.

What's more Saturday than a fully equipped entertainment center with its own state of the art screening room and its custom made pool table? 

Well, nothing is.

Well head down to our first Saturday Space, this beautiful and elegant basement perfectly designed to spend a Saturday in good company and good fun.

This stairwell, featuring carpeted steps and a gorgeous wooden handrail, takes us from the main floor to this basement space that transmits and invites serenity in.

Does this bar need introduction? Sophisticated but functional, truly the heart and soul of this space. Once the lights go down, this backlit paneled bar will sure keep everyone talking.
