girls' generation - into the new world

girls' generation, aka SNSD, is an 8 (formerly 9) member korean girl group. the group debuted with their song 'into the new world' on august 5th, 2007, under SM entertainment. the song received moderate success, debuting at #5 on the monthly album chart and selling 10 thousand copies in its first month. however, the importance of the song lies within its legacy. with the songs themes of determination, resilience, and hope for a better future, the song eventually became an unofficial protest anthem for south koreans. in 2016, ewha womans university students sang the track during part of their peaceful protest against the university, while being forced out by police. the song was also sung by #MeToo movement protestors in 2018. most recently, the song was sung in 2024 during a protest calling for the impeachment of then president yoon suk-yeol. there's many other instances of the song being used as an anthem, but those are just a few. even though the song isn't as memorable as some of the group's bigger songs, like gee or genie, it started off the iconic legacy girls' generation left behind.
despite the group's extensive catalogue of japanese and korean music, the track remains one of, if not, my favorites from the group. the anthemic nature of the song makes it stand out from the rest of their discography, and the emotion the 9 members bring to the song really sells it. there's a reason girls' generation is one of the most iconic groups in the industry.
