hi again! it's been a while and I'm in uni now + hoping to actually use this blog, so, a reintroduction!

my name is jc and I use she/they pronouns! I'm a second-year architecture student who has a lot of time to think & listen in between projects.

A question I get asked a lot while working at a public library is "how do you deal with homeless people?"

And the answer is, we don't.

The unhoused people who come here seeking refuge 99% of the time understand that they will be kicked out if they misbehave.

The people you have to watch out for are Jessica, who only came because the kid she didn't want had to visit for a homework assignment and she just *needs* to yell at her child for asking to borrow two books or stay an extra five minutes, or Michael, who came in to look at porn on our computers for whatever fucking reason, or Karen who just wanted to come by to throw a fit that the particular book she wanted was checked out and harrass our staff about our collection being too limited.

99% of the time, the people we need to ban are middle to upper-middle class white people while the homeless and mentally ill/disabled people mind their own damn business and are honestly some of the best patrons we have.

I bring this up because today we had a man come in. He stopped at the desk, pulled up a chair and said "I'm newly homeless and was living in my car. I'm disabled. It was impounded. It's raining. I don't have a phone and I don't know where to go tonight."

And we did what we could to help. He was incredibly kind and patient despite his obvious anxiety and stress, more than most able bodied, housed patrons are to us under much less dire conditions. I liked knowing that we were the first place he came.

We have so many people like this who come in everyday. Many are quiet and keep to themselves, but sometimes they talk to us.

They tell us about how they're taking a few courses on a scholarship they applied for from our library's computer at the local community college to get their diploma. Or ask about a manga or dvd or book we might have to help them pass the time.

One woman, who comes in daily with her tattered walker always says hello to me and likes to work on the new jigsaw puzzle with me when we set one out.

So like, treat unhoused people like people. Treat disabled people like people. I don't want my library to feel like the only safe space in the world, but I'm glad it can be one of them.

I'm so sick of hearing about how "the homeless are ruining everything" when they are some of the kindest, most respectful people here. Sometimes they mutter, might not have had a place to shower, and might need a little extra space for their backpacks but that's FINE. It Doesn't Matter Actually. None of that is a problem or any of my business to care about (unless they request help/services), and I also don't think it's any of yours.

it was a DISSERVICE that peeta didn't lose his leg in the movies and he was just so "clumsy" and weaker in the catching fire film & needed extra help but that was bc of his amputated leg!! and it makes it so much crueler and heartbreaking in CF! this poor 16 year old lost his leg in a political murder competition, and in the eyes of the capitol he (now 17-18) heals a bit & finds love and gets engaged and married and pregnant with his wife and THEY'RE SENDING HIM BACK. they're sending him to fight other capable, older, experienced, 90% non-disabled victors. people who know how to WIN and kill. the trauma! the devastation! the games disabled people (mentally & physically) and they just HOSTED ANOTHER ONE and sent them all back. it's such betrayal. because truly they obviously don't value the victors, as snow likes to make it seem, smothering them with attention and riches after their victory, but they are property of the capitol, for the capitol's entertainment alone(proven by the unwilling prostitution and quarter quell 3). you won your games, cool, doesn't matter, you're gonna go back and die this time.

in the least surprising turn of events I too am returning to my hunger games phase

I kind of want to start a dedicated blog on (or, what will more likely happen, start a tag on here for) balancing architecture school with, like, having a life because I don’t know if people know that it’s completely attainable. I’m rocking this studio and my 3 jobs and my social life and my relationship and I still shower an acceptable amount!

embarrassingly, my midterm review is coming up and all I’ve actually got to show for it are some green roofs and maybe a lighthouse/observatory? I did not want to fall into that stereotype so quickly 😭. but! I got through What If It’s Us, Here’s to Us, and Gravity of Us in the last week through this project! such good reads. I’ll collect my thoughts on them soon, but the titles are cracking me up and I’ll just say that they’re a wonderful succession to read if you’re looking to lighten up a whole week of work

I saw that you love book recs and I've just gotta ask: have you heard of Burn the House Down by Kenna Jenkins? It's an alternate history novel abt the 1st woman president and her secret sapphic relationship/bearded marriage with her mlm best friend, as well as a subplot abt the burning of the white house. It also ft. An entirely queer main cast and really fleshed out characters!

oh my god this sounds incredible. I'm waiting for my hold on the seven husbands to come through (which is embarrassing because I literally own the physical copy, I just want to listen to it too) and this totally fits the vibe. I'll keep it on my list for if my library adds it or if I'm out book shopping sometime soon :)

so I realized I never finished what if it's us and I forgot where I left off so I ended up reading from, like, 1/3 of the way to 2/3s of the book before I realized that I never finished it because IT ENDS IN A BREAKUP. AND I'VE GOTTEN THIS FAR ALREADY! and yes I've been told that it's an amicable one and it's healthy and there's another book but THIS IS WHY I AM A SPOILER ENTHUSIAST. I SPENT THE DAY HERE.
