A sleepless spring night: Yearning for what I never had And for what never was.
- Richard Wright
hey.. God is more tangible than you think. how do we describe the love of God? theologically speaking, the answer is, we look at the cross. tangibly speaking, we tend to "feel" this manifestation of divine love through how we have benefited from recognizing His lordship. and so, as regular people, who have been taught a particular way of processing love and power and emotion through our own cultural lens, if the theological doesn't translate into the tangible, we discern it to be unintelligible. there's, and i think rightly so, a tension here that begs for doubt and questioning in the journey of personal faith. i think that the love of God can be simplified, if even, to two things. 1) the elementary comprehension of the gospel of jesus christ and his work on the cross, and how it relates to humanity 2) every blessing, possession, right, and relationship we have 1) is great because it transcends your personal reality. despite your present 2019 unfortunate circumstance, the cross still happened 2 millenia ago. the cross has power, even for today. even when we don't genuinely "feel" the love of God, we can turn our eyes away from the idol that is our own life, and look to jesus- the founder and perfector of our faith. it is there, and it is him, the center and the vision of truth, that we can circumvent the lies we face daily and we inundated with his grace and mercy. 2) is great because it's in your grasp. how have you experienced his love? because you're alive. because you're blessed with what you have, who you know, what you've done, and where you're going. your life is wrapped up in divine purpose and orchestration, and better yet, you get to partner with the Maker to bring about its fulfillment. everything you do matters, because you matter. the love of God is ever so acestic and transcendant and ineffable, that we won't ever taste of its full glory while on earth. and that's the part that probably bothers people the most. but hey, we also are blessed with so much, everything that we do get to interact with our bodily senses. and those are the things that the bible says are also the evidence of his fatherly affection towards us.

May I be less concerned with how I look and more concerned with how I actually am
If I’ve ever forgotten the need for the gospel, remind me to just talk to any person.
There really is no more external motivation I need to extend his grace. Brokenness is enough. Peoples painful experiences and unfavorable circumstances are enough. Beyond plain old good luck, we need God.
The healing for the human heart is nowhere to be found but in His presence and embrace. We are designed so intricately and creatively, thay never else that is made is able to satisfy us. In fact, a lot of other created things may numb us more than they improve us.
But God is different. He is Father. He is provider. Every lie that has ever been spoken against His true nature falls flat to the floor as He burns with passion to make himself known to every generation. That he is good. That he is great. And that he is love.
Where there is an absence of God, something is missing. Where His presence is center, nothing is lacking.
Pensive – Deep in thought with a hint of sadness Apathetic – Void of feeling; not susceptible of deep emotion; passionless; indifferent Jubilant – Feeling or expressing great joy and triumph Nostalgic – A sentimental longing for the past Pessimistic – A tendency to have the most unhopeful view Optimistic – A tendency to have to most hopeful view Lethargic – A lack of energy, feeling unwilling and unable to do anything
“V. The consequences of having the Spirit. 1. You will be called eccentric; and probably you will deserve it. Probably you will really be eccentric. I never knew a person who was filled with the Spirit, that was not called eccentric. And the reason is, that they are unlike other people. This is always a term of comparison. There is therefore the best of reasons why such persons should appear eccentric. They act under different influences, take different views, are moved by different motives, led by a different spirit. You are to expect such remarks. How often I have heard the remark respecting such and such persons, “He is a very good man–but he is rather eccentric.” I have sometimes asked for the particulars; in what does his eccentricity consist? I hear the catalogue, and the amount is, that he is spiritual.” –Lectures on Revivals of Religion, Lecture VII, Charles Finney.

Looking Past Perfection
Loved this excerpt from Elizabeth Gilbert in her book, "Big Magic":
"Let's talk for a moment about perfection.
It starts by forgetting about perfect. We don't have time for perfect. In any event, perfection is unachievable: It's a myth and a trap and a hamster wheel that will run you to death. The writer Rebecca Solnit puts it well: "So many of us believe in perfection, which ruins everything else, because the perfect is not only the enemy of the good, it's also the enemy of the realistic, the possible, and the fun."
Perfectionism stops people from completing their work, yes--but even worse, it often stops people from beginning their work. Perfectionists often decide in advance that the end product is never going to be satisfactory, so they don't even bother trying to be creative in the first place.
The most evil trick about perfectionism, though, is that it disguises itself as a virtue. In job interviews, for instance, people will sometimes advertise their perfectionism as if it's their greatest selling point--taking pride in the very thing that is holding them back from enjoying their fullest possible engagement with creative living. They wear their perfectionism like a badge of honor, as if it signals high tastes and exquisite standards.
But I see it differently. I think perfectionism is just a high-end, haute couture version of fear. I think perfectionism is just fear in fancy shoes and a mink coat, pretending to be elegant when actually it's just terrified. Because underneath that shiny veneer, perfectionism is nothing more than a deep existential angst that says, again and again, "I am not good enough and I will never be good enough.”
[...]
We must understand that the drive for perfectionism is a corrosive waste of time, because nothing is ever beyond criticism. No matter how many hours you spend attempting to render something flawless, somebody will always be able to find fault with it. At some point, you really just have to finish your work and release it as is—if only so that you can go on to make other things with a glad and determined heart.
Which is the entire point.
Or should be."
As a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I heartily identify with the way she describes the ill symptom of perfectionism. I have too often encountered it the way she defines it- as the enemy of reality, possibility, and fun. When the end goal of any project is premeditated upon and already deemed to be lackluster, before even its inception, is sure evidence that perfectionism has infiltrated the mind's roots. What is it to be a perfectionist apart from being driven by fear? To be led by the fear of criticism?
What if perfection, as stated, truly is a *corrosive* waste of time? I long to believe that, and live like it.
"Because done is better than good."

PURITY
Here are a few thoughts on the idea of "purity" that I've been thinking about:
1. PURITY IS POSSIBLE...
Please don't believe the lie. And don't buy the hype. It's *ACTUALLY* possible to be pure. I know all of life fights us to not be. Everything within us wages war to taint us. Practically, the odds are against us. But I believe that God is for us. Immorality taunts and mocks us to remain in slumber in the prison cell of inability and impossibility. The moment we begin to believe, "I will be this way forever" or "This is just the way it is" is the moment we have begun to believe a lie of the devil over the truth from God. It is for freedom that we have been set free. And we will be pure, just as he is pure. What is impossible with man is possible with God! What might be practically unfathomable on our own strength becomes attainable when God is in the midst of it.
2. PURITY IS PRACTICAL...
Because purity is possible and attainable... there are practical steps we can take to get there. Being pure is not an illusive road map with no clear path and an indistinguishable goal. Proper precautions can be set in place to ensure purity. We should follow the law. Respect the authorities set in place for our good. We should not do anything at night that we will regret in the morning. We should fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, just, excellent, and worthy of priase. The eyes are the windows to our soul. If we exercise caution and deliberation with what we choose to intake, we partner with wisdom to only let useful things influence us. It is our best benefit to do so.
3. PURITY IS PRICELESS...
The blood spilt on Calvary has the power to wipe away any amount of impurity and immorality. The proof of God's pleasure in our purity is the presence of an empty tomb. Jesus paid a price for the things we take easily. Our sin cost our savior his safety. We ought to be compelled these thoughts. We are a blood-bought possession, reclaimed and re-named as the temples of the Holy Ghost. This truth is a not a message to inspire guilt and condemnation. It is the proclaimation of a new reality that we are of tremendous worth and wholeness! There is a deposit placed within us that is worth guarding and protecting.
4. PURITY IS PATIENT...
We are not kept from something, for nothing. When we say yes to something, we are immediately saying no to every other option. Our 'yes' helps us determine our 'no.' As people of God, we are promised a great future and a great hope. What enables us to remain steadfast on the jounrey, despite the ups and downs of life, is the foundation that what is to come far outweighs what is immediate. We can afford to trust the Lord that he will fill and sustain our joy in the midst of longing. The future is worth the wait.
5. PURITY IS POPULAR...
This one actually isn't true. Unfortunately, purity bows as slave to evil. But not for long. The devil is a liar. I'm prophesying a change. Call me overly optimistic, or naive, or foolish, but I am believing in a day and a generation in which it will be popular to be pure. The commotion, the drama, and the gossip about the wickedness of our culture will be no more. No longer will infidelity and unfaithfulness be the horror within our heart. Purity will become the new standard. Progression to perfecion will be the new norm. The best is yet to come.
