It appeared in her hand when she escaped the Domains of Dread, and she's felt a strange presence within her ever since. Lore 159: Dorabella With thick brown hair, streaks of blonde, and piercing blue eyes, Dorabella Hawkwinter was the pride of the Hawkwinter family and promising captain of the Order of the Gauntlet. She spent her early years protecting and teaching others to protect themselves. As the premier fencing instructor for the Academy, Dorabella found herself breaking up squabbles of other noble children. In particular, she found herself protecting her adopted brother; whom she initially loathed. Over time, her adopted brother Ferrando became the love of her life. When Ferrando was charged with ending the Rime of the Frostmaiden, they spent a night together. That evening she learned that Ferrando was the true heir to the throne of Neverwinter and a few days later, she found that she was with his child. Dorabella’s world began to spiral out of control. Her trusted mentor, a high ranking officer in the Harpers, took the child from Dorabella out of fear for her father Garon Hawkwinter. Tasked to find the truth about her father, she went home to the Hawkwinter manor to find that Garon was in league with the cult of Asmodeus in an effort to bring the lord of devils to the sword coast. Desperate to stop her father, she reported to Helm’s Hold where she secured a Battalion. As the battalion was sent to Waterdeep, Dorabella was ordered to stay behind. Forever dedicated to duty, she snuck away to accompany the battalion; her first brazen disregard for orders. She was only fifteen minutes behind the battalion when every single member of the battalion was frozen solid. With her father's betrayal, her daughter's kidnapping, and her rank compromised, she went north to find Ferrando. Upon her arrival, Ferrando’s compatriots, the Wayfaring Strangers, informed Dorabella of Ferrando’s gruesome death. Ferrando had been picked apart by vultures while defending a child. For the first time in her life, Dorabella questioned Helm in prayer. Helm did not directly respond, but instead filled Dorabella’s mind with images of Amelia; her daughter. Once again, Dorabella must dawn the mantle of duty and press on for the sake of her child. Lore 158: Osonia V'ellen (read more...) Osonia V'ellen is a lean and athletic Aquatic Elf and Tempest Cleric with beautifully flecked golden eyes that slant slightly. Her long hair is stark white, and she wears a gold and green ribbon braided gently into a front strand. The daughter of a scholar and a fisherman, Osonia never thought she'd amount to much. She spent most of her time in the library or church, learning all she could. She was an extremely devout follower of the gods, even more so the God of Tempests after a particularly fateful day. Osonia's body is covered in lightning-pattern scars due to an incident that occurred that should have killed her. Under a clear sky did lightning strike, leaving her permanently scarred. However, not only did she survive, she gained the power to control that which sought to kill her. The ability to command and conjure lightning. Her father was long gone, taken by a brigantine of pirates. With her newfound powers, she has sworn to find and rescue him. Osonia wields a trident and net when not using magic, alongside tools she learned to use from her father. Lore 157: Destina (read more...) Destina is an agile rogue shadow-dancer who keeps her dark auburn hair tied into a braid pinned behind her with a large needle that doubles as a last resort dagger. Her hazel eyes reveal a kind and helpful soul despite her guarded nature. Though she tries to follow a straight course, Destina is willing to break the rules in order to get the job done. She grew up in a modest home and with good parents, but started to get into mischief and finding out secrets was a game that she became good at. So good that while out on the streets she was noticed by another who took her in and taught her the ways of a shadow dancer in secret. Now grown up, she still lives with and has a decent relationship with her parents, though by night she lives the private life of a rogue in the shadows. Destina wears a diadem of the goddess of death and a shadow veil to help conceal her in darkness and shadows, her trusty rapier at her side and a short bow, with a belt of 4 pouches; a potions belt, a bag of holding survival pouch, alchemical pouch, and a caltrops pouch. Lore 156: Raina (read more...) Raina Voloshin is a pale human Twilight Cleric with long chocolate cherry straight hair, coffee brown eyes, and a lean but athletic build standing 5’9”(175cm) tall. Her hair is pulled back when in combat, and she can often be seen with an ever-present haunted expression upon her face. Raina wields a warhammer and kite shield, and a breastplate with a silver necklace, with a silver belladonna charm just below it. Raina’s haunted eyes are disarming, but she never talks about what torments her. She is a stoic, driven and selfless protector of innocents. Raina escaped the Domains of Dread when her friend Delyan made a deal with a hag, but a presence had attached itself to her as they fled. Since then, Raina looks as if she has seen the stuff of nightmares. Lore 155: Arabelle... (read more) ~Curse of Strahd Spoilers~ Arabelle was first encountered by a plucky group of adventures in the Realm of Barovia within the domains of dread. She was then 7 years old and lived with her family at the vistani camp just east of Vallaki, and despite her young age she was very mature and had seen things most adults hadn't. Unlike the general population of Barovia, Arabelle seemed to have a special connection to the dark lord of the realm, one Strahd von Zarovich, for she was the descendant of both Madame Eva and Barovian royalty, though she was unaware of her connection to Strahd. The party first met Arabelle when a local drunkard had kidnapped her and intended to sacrifice her in Lake Zarovich to bring him good luck in his fishing. They were having none of this and saved her from a watery doom. She became a key part of their plan to defeat Strahd and escape from Barovia and gained a special place in the hearts of both the paladin Roe and, although he would never admit it, the tiefling Victory. Along their journey, the party met up with Mordenkainen, who, after bringing him back from the brink of madness took them into his otherworldly mansion where Arabelle began to struggle to maintain her control against some form of evil smoke that began climbing up her arms and using her to do deeds of unimaginable evil. The party realized that their time may be short but had Arabelle stay at the mansion to protect her while they prepared to assault Castle Ravenloft itself! To try and save Arabelle, Roe made a deal with her god that gave them more time to get her out of Barovia. With the help of a once believed dead Tatyana the party managed to defeat Strahd and make their escape from the mists. Lore 153: Veka's Glaive (read more...) The Glaive belonging to Veka (Lore 110), the destined Archief of the Nug-Ul clan. At long last, Veka had completed her journey to experience the world. She returned to her tribe proud, and boasting many scars. Her grandfather beamed with pride as he saw her walk through the gates, knowing that his granddaughter would make a fine chieftain and successor. Having made it back alive, Veka had more than earned the respect of her fellow tribesmen. She was ready to take up the mantle of leadership. Coronation Day. The whole tribe is gathered around as Veka's grandfather stands at the altar. In his hands, a necklace of bone with a gem inlaid in the center, swirling and green in color. And right beside him, a gorgeous glaive. The design intricate, it's weight perfect; this weapon was priceless. Crafted in the fashion that her family has used for generations to establish their status, the glaive was a shining beacon of brilliance. The necklace is placed around her neck. As she rises, the glaive, the Coronation Reaper is placed in her hands. Every chieftain is presented with a weapon of their very own to represent status and glory. Her heart burns brightly and she faces the clan. Fury. Pain. Grief. Veka felt it all when she held the glaive in her hands. How many lives had she taken now? It didn't matter. She was chieftain now, and she had a clan to lead. She clears her throat, and begins to speak... Lore 152: Wuurzag (read more...) Wuurzag is a large hulking Wood Elf who looks more Orc than Elf. And that is because he actually used to be an Orc. Wuurzag grew up in Knagh (Nah-g) under a great roaming band of orcs who worshipped an angry god of war. This bloodthirsty band rought many bountiful raids upon other orc tribes with devastation. Though many in the band believed that Wuurzag would be a great raider, his heart felt longingly for something calm and fun, and less blood-ridden. One day, while scouting for his band of merry raiders, Wuurzag stumbled upon another roaming band of orcs, well equipped but rather normal looking to the young orc, so he went to tell his group. They thought Wuurzag had stumbled upon a bountiful catch, so they prepared an ambush for the smaller group of orcs, prepared to make another mound of bodies to loot. It turned out the small group was a much more experienced and powerful party, who were able to turn the tide of battle and come out on top, scaring away what little of Wuurzag's former band was left to the hills. A scared and begging Wuurzag was left behind to face those who had bested his band. Instead of killing Wuurzag however, they offered him a place amongst them, seeing something in the young orc that wasn't savage or hateful like his compatriots, but kind and understanding. From that day, the prophet of Enoreth amidst the party taught Wuurzag the art of worship and the boons that may be gained from it, and took it to heart when Wuurzag was eventually strong enough to move on. He was left in the lands of Thechelon, to start his adventure in the land of Elves. While adventuring, Wuurzag stumbled upon and managed to commune with Lloth and after a conversation with her, was transformed into an elf. Wuurzag is now a Wood Elf instead of a orc, but retains much of his physical stature and features. Lore 151: Anders, the Paladin who never takes off his helmet (read more...) Anders (born Solas, but changed his name when he committed a terrible deed) is a 32 year old Variant Human Paladin (Oath of Devotion). He has a muscular build at 6'1" (185cm) and 220lbs (100kg) with grey eyes, pale skin and black hair that no one ever really sees, as Anders will rarely ever take off his helmet. Alongside his signature bronze helmet, he wears steel chain mail and wields a rather ordinary longsword and round shield that he took from a farmer. Wrapped around both wrists are cords of red chains that symbolize Ilmater. Anders often looks weary, even when he is not physically tired. He is patient but has a bad habit of losing his temper when that patience runs out, he also loves tea. Anders was sent to the church of Tempus for an education and career when he was 10. He then became a paladin and went on crusades in his mid 20s. He learned that unholy changelings were in the area and got separated from his company. He tracked the group of changelings and found a farmer family. Believing they were the changelings, he ruthlessly killed them all. Of course, when their lifeless bodies did not change form, he realized the family were normal people, just like his own farmer parents back home, and a terrible guilt settled in his chest that would never fade. Anders left his company and changed faiths to serve Ilmater in order to seek forgiveness for his atrocities. He went on a mission at sea but capsized and woke up on a beach, where his campaign begins. Artwork done for my awesome patron, Samim! Lore 150: Professor Lucan Darkbrick the Third (read more...) Professor Lucan Darkbrick was a dedicated professor and historian in the 9th College of Korranberg. Both his dissertation and his research pointed toward the creation of war-forged and techno-magic and for years he was approved quite an abundant grant. However, one day quite unexpectedly, the dean of the University came and informed Lucan that his grant was to be reduced by 95% in order to support a new program, “The Argath Project”. This upset Lucan, as his research was simply too important. He couldn't just stop now, but he had no gold. What he did have, was hundreds of spell copies in the library and many people potentially interested in them. That's when the smuggling began... Eventually, after being caught red handed, Lucan was kicked out of his university and sent to prison, and lost all prestige as a scholar. Now, Professor Lucan Darkbrick the 3rd adventures in order to seek funds for his research and one day, make everyone in the 9th College of Korranberg rue the day that they pulled his funding. Lucan is a suave gentleman who wields a peculiar looking cane with a purple jewel. This cane hides within it a deadly blade that can extend into a blade whip. Lore 149: Phase Spider (read more...) A Phase Spider was a magical beast akin to a predacious version of the ethereal filcher. Phase spiders were large arachnid-kin that dwelt within the Ethereal Plane. They made quick forays into the natural world to snatch unlucky creatures to feed upon. Those stolen by phase spiders were never seen again and were regarded as unsolved disappearances. Phase Spiders only ever visited the Material plane for a quick hunt. It would look for a likely spot in the Ethereal Plane, and then phase (it's form of teleportation was known as "phasing," hence the name) to the Material Plane, presumably ambushing travellers, biting them, and then quickly phasing back to the Ethereal Plane with the body. Lore 148: Giant Scarab Beetle (read more...) Giant scarab beetles were reclusive creature who preferred to stay out of combat. They were often found in large caverns, rolling large balls of dung, or hunting small critters. Giant scarabs had vestigial wings, well protected by their carapace. The wings allowed them to fly short distances, or, to be more precise, to jump and hover as far as 360 feet (110 meters). When the beetles used the wings, they emitted a glow and generated loud clacking and buzzing sounds. When attacked, giant scarabs attempt to flee most of the time, jumping away from danger. Their main defensive ability was creating a magical flare from under their wings. This bright light had a radius of 150 feet (46 meters) and dispersed any and all magical shadows or darkness within 10 feet (3 meters) from their bodies. The same magical light damaged undead, shadows, shadow fiends, slow shadows, darkness elementals, and similar creatures. This magical flare could last up to six minutes, burning the affected creatures continuously. Outside of the Prime Material plane, giant scarab beetles could be encountered on Thanatos, 113th layer of the Abyss, in Naratyr. There they often were kept as guard pets. Lore 147: V'uuran of the Shifting Fates (read more...) V'uuran is a Masked One that has lived for two hundred years. He was one of the first 100 of his kind that were gifted a mask when the Maskmaker began the process of creating one for each of her kin. V'uuran has traveled for many years before settling down in Olbia to the North in Latakar. There, he would come to learn of the cruelty of the other races and would join the clan known as the Shifting Fates. By joining this shadow clan of his kind, he found a purpose; to serve and protect his kin via the shadows. V'uuran began taking on missions and going on adventures that would take him to places he had never been to before. Most recently, he has learned of the theft of his clan's black diamond by the Blades of Winter, another notorious shadow clan of the North. He knows how important this black diamond is to the people of his clan, and so V'uuran takes it upon himself to investigate matters and retrieve it at all costs. V'uuran is an NPC character from last month's Blades of Winter adventure that can be found on my #patreon. Organized by @kelfecil (who creates several adventures every week), Blades of Winter is an exquisitely written adventure that combines artwork, maps, and even music for the perfect one-shot or complimentary adventure to your campaign.
