summary: finding it hard to accept the fact that Steve wants to get to know you â the real you â leads to an argument neither of you can erase.
warnings: lowk not that angsty. although thereâs no smut, MDNI. Allusions to breakup though they donât actually officially break up? Reader is lowkey an avoidant but arenât we all.and I tried my best to edit this fic (itâs from like 2023-2024). But any nice and respectful feedback is appreciatedđ«¶đ» and I hope you enjoy!
The breakup had been so sudden. Thatâs what hurt the most. One day youâre laughing with Steve in the kitchen, having conversations about the future. And next, youâre screaming at each otherâs faces, saying things intended to hurt each other.
He had promised you the future. But clearly, promises are meant to be broken.
Youâve always been a hot head. Thatâs just the way you grew up. Being defensive, standing your ground. Never one to open up or burden people with your problems. Which is what lead to the big argument. Throwing words around carelessly, pretending it hurt way less than it actually did.
âI donât know what you want me to say Steve!â You yell.
He stares at you with a desperate, pleading look in his eyes.
âI want you to let me in â tell me whatâs wrong. I canât keep guessing whatâs going on in your head!â He snaps back.
âI have let you in! Iâve shown you versions of me that I hate -â
âNo! No you havenât! Youâve shown me what you want me to see, but I donât know you! You donât have to be so independent â youâre allowed to rely on other people! Rely on me!â He yells. Anger and need pouring out.
âOh come on! You donât have to know every little stupid thing that I struggle with. Iâve let you in as much as I can and that should be enoughâ you say sternly.
He runs his hands through his hair as if the action itself could stop this whole argument.
âItâs not enoughâŠâ he mutters
You canât help the hurt that flashes through your eyes. You stare at him for a second.
âWhat?â You whisper.
âI canât keep giving my all and waiting for the day that you decide you trust me enough to actually talk to meâ He says. You hate the acceptance you hear in his voice.
âWhat does that mean, Steve? Youâre willing to leave just because I struggle to open up?â You say.
âI think we both just need some time to cool down. We need spaceâ He says, grabbing a jacket off the couch and walking out of your house.
Space. The universal sign that a relationship probably just ended.
It takes you a minute to actually process what happened. Youâre snapped out of your thoughts at the sound of his car starting and exiting the driveway. You look around the empty house. Itâs quiet. Too quiet.
Steve isnât here to sing to you off key. Or to make you a cup of tea and sit with you on the couch after youâve had a rough day. Thereâs nothing. Just silence and the pain of so many unsaid words.
Just like that.
From seeing each other every second of every day, to only talking to each other when itâs absolutely needed.
You stand there. Memories resurfacing of a time that was easy. Simple.
âI love youâ Steve blurts out quickly while you make dinner in the kitchen.
âWhat?â You question shakily when you stop and look up at him.
âUh - Iâm sorry that was really, really crappy timing. But I love you. Iâm in love with you and I always have been. And I understand if you canât say it back right now but I need you to know -â he says but is quickly cut off by you grabbing his neck and pulling him into a passionate kiss.
âI love you tooâ you whisper with a small smile on your face. The look on Steveâs face will be engraved in your mind forever. A look of relief. Love.
You have to swallow down the ball that forms in your throat at the memory. Tears begin to form and you sniffle, shaking your head and wiping your tears.
Tears that Steve used to wipe. How he would hold you with such care and gentleness that youâve never experienced. He showed you what it was like to actually be accepted. To have someone fight for you. Yearn for you.
Truth is, Steve will always be wholeheartedly and undeniably yours. And you, his.
This is just the result of a stubborn man who wants to love you in every way possible, and somebody whoâs still learning how to accept that you donât have to earn someoneâs love.
A/N: can yall tell I like angst Steve? Listen this is another old piece I found and I personally feel like the characterising is a bit off but oh wellđ€·đ»ââïž

summary: you and Steve have to face the feelings youâve been trying so desperately to ignore.
warnings: none that I can really think of
Steve had always been confusing.
Confusing in the way where you just donât know what he wants from you.
Your relationship (if you can even call it that) was extremely complicated. You had never officially declared that you were dating but friends donât guide you through a crowded room with their hand on your lower back. Or spend the night when things went south at home.
The reality is, you and Steve just arenât friends. But whether or not he feels the same is confusing. And somewhat infuriating.
It started out small. Lingering touches. Prolonged eye contact. The need to feel his touch or hear his voice in order to feel any form of peace.
You denied every accusation thrown your way. When Dustin questioned you about whether or not you like Steve. When Robin rolled her eyes and told you to stop acting so obvious. That was your way of coping with the fact that you might be falling for your best friend.
Of course you couldnât keep this to yourself forever. So you sought comfort in the only other person who knows Steve nearly as much as you do. Robin.
You walked into Family Bideo on a random Friday afternoon, determination in your step.
Arriving at the counter, you look at Robin.
âHeyâ she looks up from the tape sheâs busy with, with a small smile. She has to do a double take before realising something is up.
âHold on - whatâs with the look?â She asks.
âLook? What look?â You throw back defensively.
âThat look. The hopeless âI need your helpâ lookâ she says, waving a hand in front of your face.
You raise your eyebrows âokay well I wouldnât say itâs a hopeless look, but anyways - I do maybe need your helpâ you say
That caught her interest. She puts down the movie tape she was examining and leans on the counter.
âIâm listeningâ she says.
âI think I am possibly developing a teeny tiny crush on Steveâ you mumble.
She freezes before attempting to hold back a smile.
âWhatâs with the smile?â You ask, mocking her earlier words.
She clears her throat âyouâre telling me all of this as if itâs news. Itâs not. Everyone but you and Steve can tell youâre obsessed with each other -â
âIâm not obsessed!â You interrupt.
âWhatever. Continueâ she says.
After a long, much needed vent session with Robin you came to the conclusion that you need to have a talk with Steve himself. Which is advice you obviously didnât take.
So you decided to drown your sorrows in alcohol at a party that ironically - Steve was hosting.
You danced, got a little tipsy, and when the alcohol kicked in you found yourself making out with a random guy in the corner of the room. Just as a distraction. Obviously.
You were interrupted by the root of all of your problems. Steve.
âHey Iâve been looking all over for you - ohâ he says, sentence cutting short when he takes in the sight before him.
You pull away from the guy and look at Steve âuh. Heyâ you say softly as you push the guy away from you.
Steve looks between you and the guy with confusion and an emotion you canât quite place.
âIâm sorry Iâll just - Iâll leave you to itâ he says awkwardly and clears his throat, walking outside.
You watch him leave with guilt in your eyes and take a moment to register what the hell just happened before going after him.
âWait - Steve!â You call.
Youâre outside, a little breathless as you watch Steve pace.
âSteve come on-â
âNoâ he interrupts softly.
âWhat do you mean ânoâ? I didnât do anything wrongâ you say, anger beginning to come out.
âI know that! I just-â
âYou just what, Steve? Because itâs not a problem when youâre making out with girls and going on dates but when I do it then it is? Honestly what the hell do you want from me? You are so confusing and itâs making me lose my damn mind!â You snap.
âThatâs not fair! Itâs differentâ he snaps back, stopping his pacing to look you in your eyes with an intensity youâve never seen before.
âHow? Please enlighten meâ
He stops and lets out a sigh.
âIt doesnât matterâ he says
âIt matters to me. If it has you this upset then yes - it mattersâ you say.
He shakes his head.
âDonât do that. Donât pretend like you donât know whatâs wrongâ he says sternly.
âI wanna hear you say itâ
He sighs and bites his lip in contemplation.
âWanna hear me say what? That I canât stop thinking about you? That every time a guy manages to put a smile on your face I watch in anger, thinking that it should be me making you smile like that? What - do you wanna hear me say how I canât let you go? That every waking moment of everyday I think of you and all I can think about is that you should be mine. I know you feel the same way damnit! And Iâm tired of walking on eggshells around this - us! I want you!â.
A beat of silence. Thatâs all it took for Steve to take it as rejection.
He scoffs âI - forget about itâ he says and rubs the palm of his hands against his eyes.
You shake your head and walk up to him, wrapping your hands around his neck and pulling him in for a kiss.
He freezes for a minute before he hums and melts into the kiss. Hands going to the side of your head as you fight for control.
The kiss is everything. Months of yearning and unsaid words. Itâs a silent confession between the two of you, portraying love words canât even express.
You both pull away for air, breathless and stare at each other longingly. Faces inches away from each other.
âI want you tooâ you whisper.
He tucks a strand of hair behind your ear as he looks at you with nothing but love and adoration.
âIâm yoursâ he rushes out, âcompletely, one hundred percent yoursâ he says.
You smile and put a hand on his cheek.
âI think this is the part where we kiss againâ you say.
âOh yeah totallyâ he says with a smirk and pulls you into another deep kiss.

tysm to everyone showing love on my works - it means the world. requests are open! feel free to send anything Steve or Gator Tillman related and I can certainly try my best đ«Ą
writing this series is stirring up my own childhood memories & the dance party scene is inspired by one i have vividly with my dad to this song đ —ïž
Itâs safe to say that summer break brings out the most chaotic of moments in the Harrington Household.
With all of your children at home instead of it just being you and your toddler, there was never a moment of silence.
There was fort building taking over the living room, dance parties in the kitchen, arguments over toys or devices, dragging water inside from the pool, spilled food across the floor, and your least favorite; fighting the battle of getting your babes to go to sleep at a decent time.
You wouldnât give it up though, because it was a dream getting to stay home with all of them - truly it was. And the fact that Steve was a teacher and didnât have to go to work every day was probably the best thing of all, because summer meant all hands on deck.
There were some days Steve had to be gone though - like today, because he coached some of the summer baseball leagues.
But out of all days for your husband to be gone - today was the day you needed him most.
Youâd woken up blissfully to Steveâs fingers slipping past your cute little sleep shorts and panties - feeling his morning wood pressed against you, hips moving desperately as he worked towards tipping you over the edge.
âSteve,â you whine breathlessly, hand curling around his bicep - feeling the flex of muscles there as his hand pulls pleasure from you.
âI know, honey,â he mouths at your exposed collarbone, member twitching - aching at wanting to let go, forcing himself to wait until you came first.
And then the door flew open to your two year old storming her way inside - once again interrupted from getting a release for what could be considered the thousandth time this week.
Your toddler hasnât grasped the concept of the knocking rule yet, and unfortunately, had recently learned how to climb out of her crib.
Steve immediately rips his hand away from you, making you groan disappointedly at the lingering emptiness.
âDamn those long legs of yours, Steve. She got them from you and learned how to use them to break out of her crib,â you whisper fiercely, before turning to see your babe demanding to be picked up from your side of the bed.
Steve snorts, before breathing by the shell of your ear, âYou werenât saying that last night, honey. In fact you seemed pretty pleased to have my thighs all pressed up against yours.â
Your hand whips out to smack playfully at his bare chest, and he laughs, sitting back on the bed. You roll your body to lean over the side to look at your girl.
âMorning, baby,â you smile at her, and she pouts at you, making grabby hands - upset that you still havenât picked her up yet.
You haul her up, and she curls into you - body resting on the expanse of your chest and stomach. Your hand comes up to card through the wild brown curls that she also has thanks to her daddy.
âDid you sleep well, baby?â You ask her tenderly, kissing at her hairline.
She incoherently grumbles into your neck, clearly having woken up in a grumpy mood.
Her breathing evens out, and sheâs nearly passed out again when she notices Steve gazing at her. She pops back up, grinning at him and tries to crawl over to him.
âHey, sweet girl,â he kisses her cheek, âDaddy will be right back. I canât hold you yet. I gotta go to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and uh, wash my hands.â
You giggle as he rolls out of bed, adjusting himself in the tight boxer briefs heâs still got on - appreciating the view, and your toddler gets all whiney that he left.
âTrust me, babe. I know the feeling. Donât like it when he leaves either,â you sigh deeply, significantly pent up with frustration.
The rest of the day went downhill from there.
Your toddler never quite let go of the crankiness and was practically glued to your side the whole day. You loved her to pieces, but it was exhausting not being able to put her down; making the daily to do list harder on you and all her siblings that needed you.
Your teenage girl was in a snappy mood too - something about her friends meeting up without extending the invite and was having a pity party in her room. You tried consoling her, but she didnât want you - wanted her Dad, and God did you wish Steve was there to help.
While you were making lunch, your four year old was begging you to play with him because his ten year old siblings were being mean to him - leaving him out. When you confronted them, they claimed he was being a cry baby about the rules of the game they were playing - which made him more upset at the name calling.
They then proceeded to accidentally break your favorite picture frame that held a photo of you and Steve after you forced them to let their brother join.
Your twins werenât all that apologetic about it either since you were the one that made them include your youngest boy, and honestly, you couldnât blame them.
While you were picking up the glass, you had pricked yourself, blood pooling instantly and it left a throbbing feeling in your hand the remainder of the afternoon.
Your oldest boy spent his time talking to his girlfriend over the phone or packing up for college, which was making your heart ache at being reminded that he was growing up much faster than youâd like - knowing heâd be gone in just a few short months, missing him already even though he hasnât left yet.
As the evening finally rolled around, you were incredibly grateful to see Steveâs truck pull up.
Steve had come inside briefly, kissing you sweetly in greeting, before explaining how the neighbor caught him on the way in - asked if he could come over to help fix something. Steve being the absolute sweetheart he is simply couldnât refuse.
You loved that pure heart of his, but in moments like now, when you needed him after the day you had - it was excruciating. Itâs your own fault really, encouraging him to go help - pretending you were fine when you definitely were not.
You hit your breaking point when suddenly all your babes needed you at once.
You were washing dishes, staring out the front window - hoping Steve would be coming back soon from the neighbors place when the commotion starts.
Your ten year old girl runs into the room, tears streaming down her face, âMommy, he stole my favorite Webkinz!â
Her brother follows after her, an angry expression on his face, âNo I didnât!â
âHeâs lying, Mom! Please tell him to give it back,â Sheâs nearly shouting now, and her twin matches her energy.
He folds his arms across his chest, âI already told you I didnât take it! You mustâve lost it.â
They continue to fight over the stuffed animal, when you hear your four year old start screaming from the living room.
Your teenage girl comes out looking annoyed, âHeâs been watching his cartoons for like an hour. I tried changing the channel and now heâs upset.â
The noise level continues to rise as you hear him start yelling for you. Your oldest girl then starts prattling on about him being a spoiled brat - complaining about how he always gets his way.
You swallow harshly, trying to take a deep breath when you feel your toddler grasping at your thigh - begging you to pick her up.
You canât though, you stare through her - starting to dissociate at the constant call for help from all your kids, and she starts getting fussy at being ignored.
She promptly sits on her butt, stomping her feet against the kitchen tile. You can feel yourself ready to snap - ready to crack and say something youâll regret to them.
You hate that you just want them to leave you alone for a second - guilt clawing at your chest and leaning defeatedly against the sink, closing your eyes, trying to tune it all out. You jolt when you feel a tentative hand on your arm.
âMom?â Itâs your eldest boy, who could hear the ruckus from upstairs.
You give him a wobbly smile, on the verge of crying yourself; you open your mouth but nothing except a shaky breath comes out.
âAre you okay?â He asks you nervously, and itâs then that the tears spill, shaking your head incessantly to indicate you were not alright.
He looks around at his siblings still each having their own meltdown, before he looks back worriedly towards you, âWant me to go get Dad?â
âPlease,â you whimper brokenly.
Your boy is out the door quickly, and you can see him crossing the grass to the house next door. You donât know how long it takes - zoning out dejectedly, feeling awful that youâre ignoring your children, but you just canât help them right now when your own tank is empty.
Steveâs suddenly there, takes one look at you - can visibly see the pure relief that floods your body when you take him in.
He takes charge instantly, bending down to scoop your youngest up in his arms - immediately settling the tantrum. He starts giving your children tasks to distract them from the chaos theyâve created.
The twins are sent separate ways to look for the lost toy - one downstairs to check the play room, one upstairs to search their bedrooms.
Your oldest girl is given a brief scolding at for changing the channel without giving your youngest a heads up - because while she deserved to watch her shows too, the price was making her brother lose his mind when he wasnât given any other options for what he could do instead.
Steve provides those options for your youngest boy who happily agrees to the third one - which is to play outside on the trampoline. Your oldest boy eagerly jumps in and offers to go with him, still just a kid at heart.
Your oldest girl is allowed to watch her show, and willingly accepts her youngest sister when Steve asks if she can hold her while he checks back in with you.
Your lower back is still digging harshly against the counter, and Steve makes a point to gently pull you away from it.
âGonna run you a bath, okay honey?â He says, tugging you towards the stairs.
âIâm okay, Steve. Just needed a moment,â you confess.
âAnd Iâm giving you more than a moment,â he replies, guiding you to your bathroom.
You try to argue, and he hushes you with a kiss - hands coming up to hold your jaw lovingly, âWant you to rest. Take some time to yourself.â
âThey need me,â you protest weakly as he plugs the drain and starts the hot water.
âYeah, they do. But theyâve been with you all day, and your needs are important too,â he says softly, brushing the moisture under your eyes delicately away.
The tension thatâs been stored in you starts to melt at his touch, and you can almost feel the pull of the tub - steam starting to rise in the air.
âIt was a really hard day without you, Steve,â you admit, leaning into him as he starts to help you undress.
âIâm so sorry, baby. Iâm here now, gonna take care of it,â he peppers kisses affectionately down your body as the fabric comes off, kneeling down in front of you so you can rest your hand on his shoulder for support.
As the water fills, he finds a bath bomb to throw in there that he knows youâll like - turning back to you to grasp onto your hips as you shimmy out of your jeans.
He mouths adoringly at your legs, âGod, youâre beautiful, honey. Inside and out, you know that?â
Youâre dizzy with want for him, but know itâs not the time - not with your kids running around with unfinished problems.
âI love you, Steve,â you breathe out.
âLove you too, honey. Love how you work so hard to take care of me and our babies,â he smiles up at you - lovestruck eyes boring into yours.
âWant you to be taken care of too. You take as long as you need in here, and Iâm gonna go rally the troops,â he lightens the mood with that comment, grinning at the sound of your laughter bubbling out.
âThanks, baby,â you mumble quietly, and when he finally gets you settled in the bathtub, you feel like a weight has been lifted off of you - finally resting after the emotionally draining day.
Steve stays with you for a moment, gazing adoringly at you, leaning forward to press a kiss to the sweet spot below your ear.
âMissed you today, honey,â he nips gently at your neck, and you lift a hand to trace at his jawbone, leaving behind droplets of water on his skin.
âI probably missed you more,â you admit tiredly.
âNot leaving you alone for that long again, promise,â he murmurs, and your eyes flutter shut - peace sinking into your bones now that you know you donât have to face the rest of the night without him.
You hear it before you see it - the dance party thatâs definitely going on in your bedroom upstairs. The music is pulsing loudly throughout the house, dull thudding can be felt even from where you stand at the entryway to your home.
From the banister that overlooks the living room, you can see the flashing lights from your room and can hear the squeals coming from your littles - making a smile pull on your lips.
Steve had encouraged you to take the day to spend some time with Max, knowing that whenever you were around her you felt significantly lighter. You were hesitant, because you didn't want to leave your husband alone after the day your children had yesterday.
Steve Harrington is anything but a complainer though, and heâs going to take care of you, and his family - no matter how tiring it can be with six kids, because he refuses to be anything like his own parents.
Which is why he nearly shoved you lovingly out of the house come morning, assuring you that the kids and him were going to have the best day together, and would excitedly await your return.
You were thankful for the day with your sister, cup sufficiently filled and ready to see your babes that you missed dearly, no matter how horrible yesterday was.
You can tell that your children have had quite the day - living room transformed with makeshift forts, kitchen sink overflowing with empty bowls of ice cream, and the rave thatâs happening on the story above you.
You kick your shoes off and pad up the stairs, music decibels increasing the closer you get. You can tell that itâs one of Steveâs favorites - Sandstorm by Darude - can remember when the song first came out and Steve would blare it in his truck when it came across the radio. Youâd gotten him a CD with the track on it that he liked to pop into the player every now and then.
You hurry your steps, feeling like you're missing out on the fun, and nearly have the shit scared out of you when your eldest girl pops out of the room - sunglasses perched on her face, arms crossed, expression stoney.
âPassword?â She says stoically, pretending to be a body guard, and you canât believe that Steve and her siblings have somehow convinced her to take part in this.
Suddenly the music stops, and you try to peer into the dark room since the door is cracked open - can sense that theyâve stopped dancing, turned their flashlights off, whispering conspicuously about letting you in.
âMomâs the favorite?â You guess jokingly - can hear the gasp of mock offense from Steve behind the door.
âJust for that, youâre going to have to say the real password two times,â Steve calls out, and you hear the traitorous laughter of your children.
âFine, Dadâs the favorite,â you huff out lightheartedly, and it makes a smile twitch on your girl's face.
âYes, and one more time?â She replies, going along with her fatherâs wishes.
You sigh pretending to be exasperated, âDad is obviously the favorite.â
Instantly, a tiny hand shoots out from the opening of the door - itâs your four year old boy grasping a pair of black sunglasses, leaving sticky fingerprints behind on them. You take them from him, and the minute youâve got them covering your eyes the music is blaring once again - starting over from the beginning.
Your girl steps aside, letting you in, and you're greeted with a sight you want ingrained into your brain for the rest of your life.
Your twins are jumping up and down in time with the beat of the song, and your four year old dances his way back into the middle of the room - stepping up onto the ottoman that sits at the base of your bed where your oldest rests, strumming his guitar along to match the chords in the song.
Steveâs dancing - no rhythm at all, but heâs bouncing your toddler around on his shoulders, fingers curled firmly around her legs to keep her steady. She lets out little screeches of delight every time he spins a bit too fast.
Theyâve all got sunglasses on, though the ones covering your toddlers eyes are skewed - crookedly hanging off of her, and the disco ball you got the kids for Christmas last year is displaying a smattering of colorful stars across the walls.
Your toddler finally notices you, and she squirms around, wanting to be in your arms after missing you the whole day. Steve lifts her up and off his shoulders, passing herto you when you hold your arms out for her.
âMommy, miss you,â she tells you.
âMissed you too, babe,â you smile, holding her tightly - swaying back and forth as the music continues to fill the room.
Your twins launch themselves off the bed, running to you, hugging you simultaneously - start rambling about their day with Steve and that they wished you couldâve been there for it.
Your four year old follows their lead, making his way back over to you and pushing his way into the hold your other kids have on you - refusing to be left out.
âIt looks like you had the best day with Dad today,â you tell them, feeling just a tad bit disappointed that you couldnât have had that with them.
âYeah, but it wouldâve been better with you here,â your oldest girl tells you almost shyly, and your eldest boy agrees with her.
Steve pushes the sunglasses covering his eyes back into his hair - instantly reminding you of the day you met him in high school, when he had similar ones perched on him. It causes the invisible string that ties you to him to to pull taught, desperate to be in his arms after being gone.
Despite your hands being full, he has the same idea - pulls you to him, capturing your lips with his and a mix of giggles and groans from your kids ring in your ears, causing you to smile against Steveâs mouth.
âI think I missed you the most,â he presses his lips to yours once more.
You hum in agreement, âMissed you, baby.â
âFor what itâs worth, Iâm pretty sure you're actually the favorite,â Steve grins, referring to the fact that you were gone one day, and your children are hanging off you like itâs been weeks instead.
The events from yesterday are forgotten about, always providing your children with a fresh start - and as you spin giddily around the room with Steve and the sweet people that you created with him, you canât help but think you wouldnât mind reliving the sensory overload if it meant it led you to this particularly moment again.
