Which poem are you?
I donāt remember all the names
of the boys I fell in love with
in the days of my youth.
But I have preserved
each and every one of them
in the words that I scribble.
So darling, which poem are you?

I am writing this poem
And Iāll write another after this
And maybe after 400 poems or so
Iāll wonder if Iāve already written this or not
Iāll be lost in my own words
Lost for words
And Iāll try to drown in the misery
Of having written too much
Yet writing nothing at all
Maybe that is why words donāt come to me anymore
i have kissed many boys
i was fifteen when i had my first kiss he was just a boy next door and i thought it was love but we were just kids who wanted to explore we were nervous and scared we talked about it for days we both wanted to do it so we sneaked out and kissed
it wasnāt that bad for a first i thought it was adorable two teenagers in love but boy i am bad at judging people it was just a kiss for me an innocent mistake how did it turn into consent to invade my personal space? i kissed his lips he touched my back but when did he slip his fingers inside my favourite pants? for years i thought it was just him i told myself that there were better men it happened once, it wouldnāt happen again you see i thought i had learned my lesson fast forward two years, i am seventeen iāve grown up and i am healing i give love another chance i think iāll ignore this bad feeling because i met this guy and although he is not my type but he understands me better than the rest so i wonder if this is the one. he had a rough past as well he knew better not to pass on the pain what he went through, what he felt but boys are boys and that is what there all is we went out on a date but i wasnāt feeling fine so we sat on the rooftop and we talked about his friends smoking joints the sun began to set and i thought it was beautiful until i felt his lips forced on mine thatās when it all felt like the end of the world all those mesmerizing colors vanished as i tried hard to push him away but the disgust and helplessness took over me and i waited there, frozen in that place this wasnāt supposed to happen to me i had always suffered this pain why was his hand moving down my shirt when i already told him that i didnāt want it? i felt his hand tighten around my breast as he tried to bite my lip i was stuck between him and the wall i even broke my shoe in a fail attempt to kick i hated myself, i hated myself so much and he made me feel guilty about it saying i coulndāt please him because i couldnāt understand his fucked up state so i left him and i left him for good it was painful but important for me i needed to protect myself and i promised myself that this wouldnāt repeat
i was alone so i confided in a friend i told him about my scars how men used me as they liked because thatās just how they are he told me it will be alright that heāll keep me safe from all the monsters and i trusted him, i trusted a man again i wish i could go back and shake myself from the shoulders
because like every other man he couldnāt just control so he pulled me in for a kiss even when i said no he said that i wanted it because it had happened before he kissed me hard, hurting my lips as he repeatedly called me a whore his friends, they all were there as a witness but they looked away to the other side bros before hoes they chanted without a speck of guilt in their eyes it was that moment when i gave up for the first time i gave up on love, i gave up on myself and i almost gave up on life you see i was seventeen and men had used me against my will, like a piece of meat not once or twice but thrice? (kill me) and every time i thought i had learned every time i thought this was the last time i was proved wrong again and again as another man crossed the lines i never knew how to be loved without being forced, without having to fight i never really had a kiss after the first although i had kissed many boys so at nineteen when i felt his lips not forcing me but asking āmay i?ā i didnāt know how to respond i just held his face and i cried i cried for the younger me who was never loved right and i cried for the older me who was going to be loved for the rest of her life
āWe die to each other daily. What we know of other people is only our memory of the moments during which we knew them. And they have changed since then. To pretend that they and we are the same is a useful and convenient social convention which must sometimes be broken. We must also remember that at every meeting we are meeting a stranger.ā

Let me tell you a secret, I hope you keep it to yourselfĀ
I try not to show it so often but I guess I am depressedĀ
Oh no, Iām sorry I didnāt mean it unload my burden on you
I was just having this feeling and I didnāt know what to do
You see at first I thought it was just a bad dayĀ
That Iād stay in and watch some movies and be okay
But then it became a bad week, and then a bad monthĀ
And slowly I lost the count of the days, I felt worthlessĀ
I was doing everything that I did as usual butĀ
the time slowed down and the pictures started to lose colors
At first I thought it was just meĀ
but then the whole world started to seem blur
The most difficult task became getting out of bed every day
So I started staying in, sleeping or just lying downĀ
thinking it was just a day off, a much needed breakĀ
but little did I know it would gradually become my escape
I triedĀ āreaching outā to the people around me
who posted on social media that they can help and shit
but I didnāt want to just load it all on someone
so I tried to be subtle, indirectly leaving some hints.Ā
People thought it was for the trend, I was being cool
They handed me more bricks to build a stronger wall
From being away from God to being delusionalĀ
I heard it all.Ā
I didnāt realize when I began losing peopleĀ
Maybe it was the wall that kept them out or
maybe they just didnāt want to have someone like me around
someone who theyād talk about later of course.Ā
I see Iāve been speaking since some time now
And you look tired and bored of meĀ
Wait, let me tell you a joke or twoĀ
anything you want, please just donāt leave.
Iām stupid?Ā
Yes! Of course.Ā
Iām so stupid that Iād try to kill myselfĀ
by jumping from the ground floor.Ā
Did that make you laugh? Oh Iām glad!Ā
I hope you didnāt notice how badly I wanted to say
top floor instead of ground floor
because that would have only scared you away.
So I was telling you about how people left me alone
They didn't understand my isolation and coldness were just
attempts to find someone to hold onto during the storm
but instead I became invisible just like this poem
I couldnāt blame them though, I never wouldĀ
You canāt force people to be there for you
No matter how much you want toĀ
No matter how much they should.
I understood them despite all the dark clouds around me
I could see their fears, their thoughts, their priorities
Everyone had a right to have someone better
But they were just afraid to end up on the letter
They didn't realize how they weren't supposed to cure me
They just had to be kinder and show some empathy
But that's alright, sometimes they need it themselves too
Maybe that's why I try to be always there because I've walked in those shoes.
Instead of filling our hearts with hatred and disgust
We should look around, we all are humans
We should understand each others' pain, make them feel okay
We should try to make sure that their bad days are just bad days.
Life's too short to regret when it's too late
You can't spend it living in a state of what ifs
What if I had just called her and asked her how she was?
What if I had just stayed there when she tried to cut everyone off?
Oh, is it time for you to go?
I guess I should too.
Thank you for listening to me
I hope this stays between me and you.
Today, I grow up.
I donāt know when my depression found me
Must have been 8th grade or years before that
But it took me a lot of time
To recognize it and give it a name
Because I was too scared to see it as it was
Or maybe I was just scared that it was mine.
Ā It wasnāt easy to accept that I was depressed
I thought it was a phase
So I called it the blues and even PMS
I thought it was the routine
Or the stress
Or maybe it was just all in my head.
Ā It started off as regular nightmares
About me and my death
Trust me, horrible images
And I would wake up trying to breathe
Trying to figure out what is real
But all I heard was how my faith was weak.
Ā I tried to be happy most of the days
(Because that was expected of me)
And when I wasnāt, Iād chose the fake ways
To wear a smile, to pretend I was fine
Doing all those things that I didnāt like
I just wanted to feel alive.
Ā It began to hurt, I couldnāt point it out
Was it my chest or my throat?
With days the pain began to grow
I couldnāt sleep, the tears wouldnāt stop
So I began taking pain killers
Like candies and lollipops.
Ā I didnāt realize back then how
Those pills and tears only
Fed the monster that was growing inside me.
It became larger and stronger than who I was
It took over everything, my relationships and routine
I couldnāt move, I couldnāt breathe.
Ā So now there I was, a scared lonely teenager
On a sleepless night, in a room that had heard too much
Of my cries and my helpless tries
With a bottle of pills and a bundle of fears
And not a single soul to help me spell the big word;
Depression.
Ā Sometimes I wish I could sleep one day
And wake up with no traces of this plague
No memories, no feelings, nothing at all
Just the happiness that I once lost
Somewhere between numbing my pains
And the search for the existence of a God.
And at the end of the day I sat alone holding my breath thinking that everything might stop for a moment if I just forget to breathe for a while.

Imagine dying on your birthday. Full Circle.
Recently I've met people who know me for what I do, what I achieve. They know me for the huge milestones that is something to be proud of at this age.
But there is a whole list of things, little things, I have done which makes me more proud of myself. Things that nobody knows.
Javaria.
That is my name. It means āthe one who spreads happiness.ā I try to live by it. But lately, Iāve been running out of happiness to spread. I canāt find reasons to smile. And if I do, I canāt stop counting the reasons I shouldnāt smile. My life has not been the worse but it has not been easy for me either. Sometimes, I wonder what is a bigger mess, me or my life.
But in the middle of all this, Iāve been trying to find reasons to love myself. To be proud of myself. To forgive myself. To be myself.
Hereās a list of little things that I did recently. It might not matter but Iām proud of it.
1)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I accepted that I have a depression and anxiety issue.
2)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I tried to seek help despite the voices in my head telling me not to.
3)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I overcame my trust issues and made friends more than I ever did.
4)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I interacted with people even if I wanted to bury myself in my grave.
5)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I woke up even on the darkest days and managed to get out of bed.
6)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I kept myself open for people to share their issues regardless of my own mess.
7)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I didnāt isolate myself by pushing people away.
8)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I let go.
9)Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I let go of my fears.
10)Ā Ā I let go of my guilt and regrets.
11)Ā Ā I let her go.
12)Ā Ā I fell in love.
13)Ā Ā I found the courage to face him.
14)Ā Ā I found the courage to face him and forgive him for harassing me, for disrespecting me, for breaking my trust.
15)Ā Ā I forgave them all.
16)Ā Ā I forgave myself.
17)Ā Ā I didnāt kill myself.
18)Ā Ā I learned to be easy on myself.
19)Ā Ā I survived the worst mental breakdown.
20)Ā Ā I tried to be there for everyone.
21)Ā Ā I smiled on the worst days.
22)Ā Ā I realized the need to be there for myself.
2.
Ā People talk about how life is short and unpredictable. You hear it and move on. It doesn't hit you until life plays it's move with you, taking away someone you love. Only then you feel the pain every time you hear someone say how unpredictable and short life is. I don't talk about you anymore because it hurts and nobody gets it. But I can't help it tonight. I can't believe it has been two years since you left us. All the wounds are bleeding again, Fay. I told my therapist about you once. She didn't understand it, I guess. She didn't ask me about you, who you were, what did you like, what did you dislike. She just asked me how I feel about you. It hit me hard then. I don't want people to forget you. My mama says I should let you go. That you were in pain and now you're in a far better place. I try. I swear I try so hard. I get busy in daily life and don't open old drawers. But on nights like these I turn into the selfish monster we humans are. Tell me, how to let go? How to stop this guilt and regrets creeping in? How to get out of the loop of the last moments I spent with you? How to forget your beautiful face? Your cracking voice? How to forget that last haunting sight? How do I pull myself out of that feeling I sink in every time I get flashbacks of the moment they took you away? How a part of me was lost that day? How I wished I could give everything to bring you back? They made me delete all your pictures, you know. They said it would hurt your soul. Couldn't they see how much it hurt me? To just erase you as if you had never existed? As if you were just a warm memory? I haven't been the same since you left. None of us have. I see all the rest and I can feel the void inside them you created by leaving us all. They all smile and busy themselves but I know each and every one of them feel your absence, we all do. It has been two years. Two years. I tear up every time still. I can't even say your name without my voice cracking. I miss you so much, fay. I hope you're in a better place. I hope I get to meet you some day.
1:26 AM
why is it that every time i'm lost, your words echo in the back of my head i told my doctor about it, "it's not healthy", he said "he's nothing but a ghost now, my child forget what he did, move on with what he left." and i try my best trust me, i do, i keep you away from myself as far as i possibly can but on nights like these, when the whole town is dead you creep back in, like you used to when we were kids and you remind me of all that i've long buried so tell me darling, how do i get rid of this?

A silent rant
3:33 AM
It has been two days since I canāt sleep.
Iāve been taking all these pills in vain,
Nothing is helping me right now,
I canāt seem to see a way
Out of this mess, out of my mind
What if this is it, my darling?
Death by my own poetic lines?
of words and rhymesĀ i write for you
i want to write you a poemĀ every single day for the rest of my life with the hope that from the day they lower me into my grave you will remember meĀ every time with one of my poems.Ā
