Waiting for you

Messing around on my sister’s iPad today and colored an old sketch. Have some baby Shiro, Ryou, and Kuron/Jiro. Jiro’s new to the twin thing, but he’ll fit in before he knows it.

we’re the motherfucking pony pals, and we’re here to fuck. shit. UP.

@ancharan, this is so good!!!!  I mean, first I am pulled in by Anna’s glowing blue eyes and the tease of her glowing arm!  and then I notice her halo!?!  and then Pam’s tensely skeptical expression - oh wait! and then there’s Pawnee and her face!  that expression is just fantastic!  and her truly masterfully drawn hands clutching the flask!  her whole pose is a fantastic use of body language!  perfection!

then my eyes travel up and see Acorn and Minos in all their glory - full-on flame-backed silhouettes, Acorn snarling and bucking while Minos perches elegant and cool on his back, unmoved by Acorn’s freak-out.  and they have halos too!?!?   I love halos!!!!!!!

then above the title Jeanne and Dirk!  Jeanne looks so wise and accepting while Dirk looks so distressed.  and they way the background is fully orange by the time the gradient reaches them.  and the way they hover over, peering down at the rest of the figures.  Ugh!  it’s wonderful!

Most species are still delighted. But we are the Bybleotekar, the recorders of the spaceways, and we have begun to wonder. Our merry companions are… not different, but too much the same. They understand so readily, accept so quickly - most new species have trouble adjusting to dealing with aliens, to the realities of space travel, to the sheer bigness of the universe. But the humans are so adaptable, so ready for it all, they might be remembering something they’ve forgotten, not learning something new. 

Some of us, the Izaslanik of the Bybleotekar, the gatherers of information for the record keepers, began encouraging humans to join us, that we might study them more closely. They like the work - they are a curious species, delighting in new knowledge, and they make able assistants. My human companion is named Mira, a young female. She is a good companion, who sings sweetly and laughs often. 

When Mira struck the first blow against what I thought I knew of the universe, against illusions soon to shatter that I had thought were truth, we were attending the coronation of a lesser Netar of the Kktil, recording the customs and ceremonies and unofficially enjoying the colourful celebrations. Mira was watching the dancing, her mouth widened in a ‘smile’. “It’s so pretty,” she said, her hairless face sheened with sweat under the hot sun. “I love the turquoise jewellery.” She pointed to the bright blue stones that bedecked the dancers. “I should buy some. Our homeworld doesn’t have any turquoise, you know. Only a few pieces we brought with us when we came.” 

It takes me a little while to understand what she said. It is only later, during the feasting, that I turn to her again. “You said your homeworld doesn’t have turquoise. Only… what you brought with you. Do you mean turquoise you have bought offworld, since you joined the spaceways?”

Initially it started as training, but it always disolved into a free-for-all to Take Down The “TeamDad” and a tangled dogpile with “training” completely forgotten. And sometimes the Team’d try to set up an “ambush” during non-training hours (if it looked like a Good Headspace Day for Shiro.)

Shiro’s body slowly adjusted back to playfighting as a form of affection, easing his fear that he’d end up having an episode and hurt them, which he finally admitted to his friends. (“We know.”)

But as much as it allowed Shiro to heal and check their progress both, that Fear that they hadn’t yet beaten him—that someday they might need to take him down—remained. Quietly he asks Pidge to prepare for that—just in case. Just for his own peace of mind.

And then he was gone.

And then “he” came back.

Except now there’s this hardness and desperation that just wasn’t there before—or were they too self absorbed to notice it? That awful haunted look almost never leaves his eyes now. He runs them harder, and snaps at them more, except it’s always runs headlong into...something...he either can’t say or just keeps biting back.

Despite “Shiro’s” increasing insistance, sometimes to the verge of near tears, the Team doesn’t take those ambushes outside of training. There’s no play to them, now. Instead they’ll try small ways to get him to relax, that he’s safe. A quick peck on the cheek or forehead, a shoulder squeeze or hug. The meals gradually having at least one of his favorites. An insistance on splitting the paperwork.

And as much as he appreciates these small gestures once he catches on, they do nothing to ease that ever growing sense of dread that he just can’t name.
