honestly, lily was a bit surprised that petunia even answered her owl, seeing as it'd been radio silence from her sister since her parents funeral. even before that, their conversations were brief and distance. the former gryffindor had been trying desperately to repair their relationship though try as she might, petunia just didn't seem to reciprocate. that was until now. lily had owled to petunia telling her that she had exciting news and would love to see her. she also expressed it'd give them both a chance to get to know one another's significant others seeing as they hadn't had a proper chance yet to do so. and petunia responded with,
"come over for dinner. 7:15 on thursday. don't be late."
it didn't seem like much but to lily it gave her hope. hope that despite their differences they could be in one another's lives. the few hours leading up to it, lily was an anxious mess. poor james having to combat her indecisiveness. what should she wear? what should she bring? they long settled on a nice bottle of champagne and some chocolates but now lily wasn't so sure. should they apparate into london then take the train? rent a car? it was obvious lily was desperate for petunia's approval.
the couple had decided it'd be nice to stay at a bed and breakfast not far from where petunia and vernon lived, settling on renting a car. the entire car ride, lily had been nervously chewing on the tips of her fingernails, a nasty habit she'd thought she'd gotten rid of. " should we have baked something? " whipping her head to face james as they neared her sister's street, " or brought a starter or something? do we think champagne is enough? what if vernon doesn't like champagne? merlin, i have no idea WHAT he likes! " her foot was tapping, thankfully she wasn't the one driving the car, nerves too much on overdrive to not ensure they wouldn't crash. " are you nervous? "
looking at the examples of siblings he had around him (petunia and lily, regulus and sirius, andromeda and her sisters, et cetera), james was quite glad to be an only child. it seemed to be far less emotionally traumatising. as he'd followed lily around all day trying to alleviate some of her anxiety, helping her decide what to wear, what they should bring and so on, he actually felt bad for her; surely family was supposed to bring you peace. the only thing petunia seemed to bring lily was stress.
petunia evans was already somebody whom james stubbornly disliked out of principle, but even he had to admit, it had been nice of her to invite them over, and so, of course, he would reciprocate in kind. he'd only met his fiancee's sister and her husband briefly once, at lily's parents' funeral. they hadn't spoken much then. a sit-down dinner, on the other hand, would give them plenty of opportunity to talk. james wasn't too worried about what they'd think about him â confident as ever, he'd never made a bad first impression, and wasn't planning on starting now. he just hoped with all his heart and soul that lily would get what she wanted. that they'd be able to mend the rift in the sisters' relationship.
it wasn't far now. though he could manoeuvre a broomstick upside down with his eyes closed in the dark, james admittedly wasn't the best driver. still, he'd taken the keys to the rental car and offered to drive them this morning. he'd had figured out a charm to shift the gears and press the pedals automatically, which meant all he had to do was steer, which he was doing with one hand, leaning casually into the driver's seat. he glanced over at lily, taking her hand in his own. "we can turn around and go back to that service station if you want to grab something else," he offered gently. if james remembered vernon correctly, the other man would probably enjoy anything he could ingest, but he wasn't about the make that joke right now. "i think it's fine, though. everyone likes chocolate. although, i don't know about the muggle kind that doesn't move." it always surprised him, a box of chocolates that didn't try to escape from you. that was half the fun. james looked at her earnestly. "he'll love you," he said, as if reading her mind, squeezing her hand. "me? yeah, a little bit. but i think it's just you rubbing off on me." he offered a smile. "i'm excited, actually. i think this'll be really good."
cool metal of the fire escape he was sitting on pressed against james as he looked up at the stars. notebook in his lap, quill twirling between his fingers, he bit his lip as he scribbled something onto the parchment, before gazing at the sky again. the air around him was still. only birds could be heard singing faintly in the distance, and the occasional giggle of late-night patrons of the various pubs below him as they stumbled back home. it was no surprise he heard the creak of metal giving away that someone had begun to ascend the stairs before he saw them. "such a peaceful night to be out," he said when he eventually did.
Alara found herself looking at James differently after that night. That everything she had held on to from the age of sixteen was almost a ghost to her now. Their lives were in to different directions and they were not those sixteen year old's anymore. She would always care about him, that she wouldn't deny. "Where did you see him last?" The witch wanted to see him before she had to make her way to her families manor for the party "I wanted to see him."
"Last I saw him he was..." James squinted as he thought hard, as if trying to conjure the most recent image of his best friend's face. "Right next to me, probably." He looked to his right like Sirius might still be there. "Which he isn't right now. Sorry. I can pass on a message? Anything I can help with?"

"Where's your better half? She's much better to look at than you are." Greta teased while she looked around for Lily's signature red hair. Not one to back down from a challenge like this she smirked, extending her hand. "Wanna bet on it?" Finishing the bottle quickly she continued. "I'm at least three shots ahead of you."
"She is," he agreed easily. It wasn't even a fair comparison. "Ah, I lost her a little while ago. The second we got here, really. Everyone's been trying to steal her away, and, I mean, I don't blame 'em." Anybody who knew Lily would do the same, surely. Try and bask a little in her light. "Obviously," he took Greta's hand. "But that's not how this is gonna work. 'At least three?' Please. I need fair, objective measurement. A ref or something. And you're starting from zero again."
She didn't care that he already knew, only happy that her friend was happy for her, happy for them. Frank and her were going to have a baby. The more times she thought it the more times it started to settle in, to feel real. "I would love some jelly slugs right now. Don't they sound amazing?"
"Umm, no," he said with a laugh. "They actually sound really horrid. Probably the worst type of jelly insect. But, hey, who am I to argue with that? If it's jelly slugs you want, it's jelly slugs you'll get." He looked around as if they would appear out of thin air at her request. "Where are we meant to get jelly slugs at this time? Let's see... in the mood for a little detour?"
"I did not." The witch whispered right away, paying close attention to her surroundings as if she could see anything asides from his face in the dim light of his wand. The two were always sneaking around to have adventures of their own, even as they grew older and they had both made more friends. Marlene was all too used to being around James that she couldn't keep away from him for too long. This particular mischief of them hadn't gone too well, Filch awaiting on the other side of the passageway and her partner in crime turning his wand down to showcase some light on the disgusting mouse that had just ran over his leg. Suppressing a squeal, the blonde stepped backwards, grabbing his hand and pulling him with her. "I'm not staying here to be blamed for something so bloody stupid." She scoffed at him, though a smile was already pulling at the corners of her lips. "If I wanted to touch your leg, I would just do it, Jamie. Now what do you say we ditch Filch and the mouses and just go hang out at Hogsmeade for a while?"
"Did too," he argued, mostly just to be annoying. After being raised as practically twins, James always gravitated towards Marlene whenever he felt particularly homesick. She understood him like nobody else did. Well, nobody else, apart from Sirius, but even then, the kind of understanding that was between James and Marlene was different somehow. "If you touched my leg, I'd have to hex you," he said seriously. Eyes alight with the spontaneous change of plan, James pretended to think. "On one hand, Filch, the mouse... on the other hand, Hogsmeade, Zonko's. Hard decision, that." He flicked her hair before setting off back down the way they came before she could retaliate. "Keep up, Marly!" James said with a laugh.
Having had a troubling night, Ted was by now on-edge and at the end of a very thin tether. He was bearing up for Andromeda and Dora's sakes, but everywhere he looked, he now saw potential threat. Paranoia was a terrible thing. He could barely suppress it. Attempting to bury it with yet another firewhisky probably wasn't helping matters, yet here he was, necking it like pumpkin juice. "It's not the fighting you should worry about, James," he said, more harshly than he intended. Holding up a hand as though to apologise, he added, "They can be anywhere and anyone. They will stop at nothing and have no mercy."
Ted had always been sensible. Or, at least, in James' teenage mind, he had always been older, hence seemed more sensible. It used to make him want to emulate it. James watched with narrowed eyes as he took a deep swig from his bottle, and then the tone of his voice. "Are you okay?" he asked tentatively. "I don't know â I feel like I know who they are. It's not that difficult to figure it out. Although, fine, I will admit that they're all mental and willing to take things too far."
When Marlene thought of family nowadays, the one face she could picture was James'. He'd always been family to her, growing up together but most importantly choosing to stay by each other's side all throughout the years. She'd lost everything, except him and with the passing time, she realised she was lucky to still have him, cherishing every chance she got to spend time with him. As the party unravelled all around, everyone celebrating and having a great time, the witch didn't feel the party could really start until he was there. She'd been having a couple of drinks already, sure, but the important bit wasn't that at all. What could one want more than to begin a new bright year with those one loved? She heard his voice among the loud crowd, she could recognise anywhere, turning immediately at the mention of her name. Spotting his face walking towards her, Marlene felt warm all over, that unique feeling one gets when thinking about home. A soft smile pulling at the corners of her lips, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm as he finally made his way through the crowd, the witch threw her arms around him the first chance she got. A very much needed hug, a very much deserved one. "Happy new year, Jamie. I think this might be a good one for us all."
Ten years had changed so much, but one of the few things that had remained constant throughout James' life was Marlene. He was grateful for her everyday, but particularly today, when he was feeling especially reminiscent. Recounting the countless memories he'd made over the past decade, in so many, he saw her face, and he hoped all his years to come would be filled with it. Only, more at peace. Drunk, not only on alcohol but also on life, James pulled her in for a hug, and he felt he could cry. Perhaps he already was. "Happy New Year, Marls," he murmured into her hair. "I really hope it is." He didn't often talk about this with her, but the topic felt heavy, hanging in the air. He wouldn't be James Potter if he didn't address it. "I know your parents, your brothers... it's not the same without them. And it probably never will be. I just hope this year, we can make them proud."

Andromeda hadn't been able to keep her eyes off Ted and Dora as the New Years Celebrations went on around her. To see the both of them so happy and relaxed made her heart ache in the best way possible. She wished she could freeze time, that they could stay in this happy little bubble. She watched from near one of the booths selling hot butterbeer as they played a game, laughing as she watched Dora cheer her father on. She was distracted from them as she caught sight of a familiar face headed her way and smiled, impossibly happy. "Well if it isn't my not so secret admirer." She teased James. She would never let him live down the letter he'd wrote her.
James grinned at Andromeda as soon as he saw her, tips of his ears blushing red when she spoke. "It's been ten years," he groaned. "When are you gonna let me live that down?" Shaking his head in disbelief, he sighed, although his smile hadn't changed. "I guess that's what I deserve for being so emotional as a kid, eh? Who even was that guy? No idea. Good thing I'm so cool and mysterious now." It was a joke, of course; James had only become more sentimental with age.

Frank liked James, he really did. But he wasn't always entirely sure that James had finished growing up yet. He remembered the sort of person that James had been in school, and he knew Lily. Lily could fight her own battles but that didn't mean Frank couldn't pitch in when needed.
"Jim, hey." he said, gesturing James over. "Happy New Years. How've you been? Any news?"
As shocking as it was for somebody who never got stressed, ever, Frank stressed James out. For some reason, he felt that he had something to prove to him â if only because of Lily.
"Ja â," he began to correct, but waved it off with an easy smile. "Never mind. Happy New Year, Frank! Hope you're enjoying your last one for a while without any nappies or baby curfew?"

Mira felt wildly overdressed for the street party going on around her in Diagon Alley. However she'd had no time to change after slipping away from her family's party, wanting to make sure she made it on time. She smiled to herself thinking of the look on Anthony's face as she'd arrived right before the clock struck midnight. It had been worth it, and she felt like a silly school girl with a crush as she thought of the kiss.
She knew it was a dangerous game to play, anyone could have seen her. She had seen other death eaters among the festivities, if they'd seen it would be difficult to explain. Still she couldn't find it in herself to care as she stood on the corner of one of the streets, waiting for Anthony to return with their warm butterbeers. She turned to look for him, almost running directly into James. While she'd seen him at order meetings they hadn't really chatted, she tended to keep to herself. It was only since Anthony that she'd felt she started to relax a little. "James sorry, it's a little crowded." She smiled. "Happy New Year!"
In the last decade, between twelve and twenty-two, it was like James had lived his entire life. So much had been squeezed into the past ten years â good and bad and everything in between. Tonight had been a wonderful culmination of it all. So many memories had resurfaced, seeing people he hadn't for years, and spent time with those he'd seen almost every day. He'd reminisced and recounted enough stories that finally, he was ready to say goodbye to the seventies and step into the eighties.
On top of the world, and at peace with everything that had happened, James smiled when Mira almost ran into him. With those drinks in hand, he wouldn't have minded even if she had, spilling them all over him. "More than a little crowded," he said with a lopsided smile. "It's okay! No harm, no foul. Happy New Year, Mira! Can you believe it's officially 1980? If New Years Eve sets the tone for the rest of it, it's bound to be a good one, eh?"
"No, they definitely despise me," he laughed, unbothered by the opinion of bigoted fools. Well, most of them. "Inbreeding causes bad taste," he said with a knowing nod, "I was just lucky to get out as tasteful and wonderful as I am." Sirius knew his unbothered outlook on life drew people to him, though he couldn't fathom why. People wanted to figure him out; find out what was under his mask of smirks and casual laughs - something that usually only made him more closed off. "You know me, I'm all sentimentality," he said sarcastically, holding his hands up in acknowledgement. He shook his head as James continued, crossing his arms once more as he leaned against the stone wall. "We were above our peers, we can't put that pressure on Junior. He might take after Wormy."
Sirius grinned as James ran off to accommodate the ridiculous pet he had accumulated, shaking his head. He held up his hands in defense as James accused him of eyeing him up, shrugging lazily. "Evans monopolises your arse now, I'm just getting what I can," he drawled sarcastically. "How lonely do you thing I am?" he scoffed. "You found him, he's your pet."
Practiced hazel eyes scanned Sirius' for evidence of anything other than humour, and, when he didn't think he could find any, James gave in, letting out a snort of laughter. "Yeah, you're right. They definitely do," he admitted with a lopsided grin. "Aren't your parents siblings? You're lucky you just have one head," he teased lightly, although he couldnât help but agree. "It's a good thing we got you out when we did, or else who knows how bad your taste wouldâve become? You wouldâve thought Pandora Nott was hot, or that Snape was cool." James snickered. "Oi, Wormyâs not that far behind. His voice broke just last week, Iâll have you know.â
"Funny, she says the same thing about you. If you two don't learn to share I'm gonna have to draw up a contract. Thereâs plenty of me to go around." James looked at him pointedly, as if that answered his question. âOuch. Since when has there ever been any distinction between whatâs mine and whatâs yours? Everything I have belongs to you, including, now, my new son. Thatâs what happens when youâre godfather. I can just dump my kid on you.â

From the beginning of their first to the end of seventh year, James Potter's voice could often be heard coming from the Gryffindor boys' dormitory talking about Lily Evans. He couldn't imagine how annoying he must've been for his friends to deal with. Yet, they still did, mostly without complaint. Luckily for them all, it had all worked out in the end. "Would've been luckier if we'd gotten together about seven years earlier, eh, Moony? That would've saved you a lot of earache." But he acknowledged his words with a nod. "I am very lucky to have her. Luckier than I deserve. The both of us, really. How are things with Aurora?" Remus deserved the entire world, and James knew Aurora felt the same. Although he supported his best friend over anyone, he'd secretly been on her side throughout their whole situation.
At the satisfied expression on Remus' face, James cracked a smile, making a mental note to keep chocolate on him more often. He shuddered as Remus talked about broken ribs and scars so casually. "I'm sorry. I should've thought." Part of him felt that this had been his fault, and he blamed himself for not realising the potential consequences of letting Remus play fight with another wolf. It had been stupid, really. Of course that had been a bad idea. Why hadn't he realised it at the time? It had been his responsibility to ensure nobody got hurt, and now here Remus was, wincing in pain. In his guilt, he fell quiet, spaced out as his gaze fixated on a branch a few feet away from him on the forest floor.
"I know everything all the time, Moons. You should know that by now," he grinned. "Nah, kidding. I've had that in my pocket for weeks." James nodded, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Just tell me when you're ready, and we'll go."
" A lot of earache," Remus joked with a smile. "I guess it was worth it because here we are now. It may have taken a while but it finally happened. Couldn't be happier for you, mate." He gave his best friend a pat on the shoulder. "Aurora and I have had a bumpy ride but we're in the best place now. I made some mistakes -- well, a lot of mistakes -- but she's giving me yet another chance. She's perfect and I don't deserve it but I have been lost without her," Remus had a soft smirk on his face. "I could give you an earache now if I really wanted to. I'll try not to. Just know I'm actually happy."
He was still sore but Remus was finally starting to be able to move. Standing up he stumbled a bit and held his chest but he could finally handle it. "No apologies. How would you know if I'm doing okay or not when I'm in form? It's not your job, Prongs." He truly appreciated James' care for him but it was true, it wasn't his job to protect Remus. In fact, it could be a deadly thing if he put himself in the line of fire. He wouldn't want to see his friend dead after his transformation back to being human. He would never forgive himself. It was better for Remus to be in pain -- or to die -- than for any of his friends.
"You're so humble," Remus laughed. "But good call. I'll have to bring some with me from now on. But it's good to know it's been there for weeks. Merlin, James. You could have left that part out." Remus let out a big sigh and walked around for a moment to see how he felt. "Okay, we can get going. I think I can make the trip. A shower and food are calling my name."
TIME:Â 8pm, april of their 5th year
LOCATION:Â passageway to honeydukes, behind the one-eyed witch statue
"did you just touch my leg?" james asked marlene in a harsh whisper from where he was crouched, hiding in the passageway as they waited for filch to finish patrolling outside. one hand holding the marauders' map and the bag of sweets they'd scored from honeydukes, the other with his wand, tip alight, he cast the light over his right leg, and immediately regretted it. "ah!" it hadn't been her, but a mouse. james jumped back instinctively, almost knocking marlene over while doing so. it scurried away amongst the chaos. james' chest heaved as he looked at her, but collapsed into laughter when he caught her eye. "i don't know how, but you did that on purpose."
