What I Can Do

Well that… sounds like an interesting story [ Nick commented, with a slight quirk of an eyebrow in amusement. ] No I-I didn’t think you were.

Not as interesting as when I met Katherine. [He winked.] Don't be so nervous, I don't bite that hard.

         We don’t have time to build fences or stakes,        to drive them out. All we can do is arm those who can        fight and come up with the rest as we go. There is no other way.        That is our quick plan. 

...Fine, fine, ok. But we can't just keep going and fighting constantly. People are getting tired and if we get a break from these things, it'll be good to have some sort of system in place so we don't all burnt out and collapse.

   ”Where are the knives?”

...Good question. I, um...isn't there a weapons stash somewhere?

Nope, it's part of the tactic. And if it's not part of the tactic, it's a dick move.

        They aren’t moving that fast and right now with things       happening so rapidly organization isn’t in the cards.       Hands on deck first, and then after all of this is over       we can make a better battle strategy. 

It might not be over any time soon so we may not have time to do something better. But...we could just figure out something quick now. We just need something.

     “Do we even have time to do that. 

I just don't think we're going to have enough people for that as long as these things keep coming. We may need a little more organization than that, or at least teach some other people how to shoot so we can have some distance on our side.

    “We’re never gonna’ have enough time. But it’s a uh — a good point.

We can carve them from fallen branches, it's not too hard or too time consuming with the right knife. And we do have the right knives to do it.

[ Nick caught the name Kirk used for the grouchy Doctor. ] - Is he a friend of yours? McCoy?

Yeah, good friend. We met in a cornfield on a warm summer night with our hair flowing in the breeze.

Sounds like a plan to me. Where, exactly, are we getting these spikes from? [ she squinted around them. ]  We should set them up outside the hospital, first.

There's bound to be some decent-sized branches around here that we can use. You know, knocked to the ground by storms and whatnot. [He nodded.] Hospital, right, good call.

       ”Oh so you mean like — spikes facing in their direction, right?

Yep, pretty much. Hopefully, it will help us out a little and buy us some time.

W-Will that be e-enough? They —- They don’t look l-like they’ll be easy t-to stop…

They don't look too bright, I wouldn't be surprised if they wound up spearing themselves. It may be enough, it may not be. We'll make it work.

    ”Do you really think we need them or they will hold long term?

They'll hold for long enough. It's just to buy us some time and to help us not waste ammo. Plus, they're fairly easy to make and set up.

 I’m up for that plan. These things look dumb enough to fall for anything. [ though she still hadn’t shown her true ability to anyone, she hadn’t hidden her intelligence, and she was willing to help out. ] Where should we start, Mr uh.. ?

Exactly, and spikes are easy enough to set up. If we're lucky, we can at least stop a few of them before we actually have to start shooting.

  “You think some spikes are going to stop these things? 

If they don't feel pain, then their brains probably won't work like ours. In that case, they may be stupid enough to not walk around some spikes and actually manage to impale themselves.

[ Nick brought his hands up to cover his ears; it was difficult to keep the sound out as he continued to hold his gun, but there was only so much to be done. At Jim’s question, Nick winced ]

[He wanted to ask about Chekov, but he swallowed it down. Chekov would be fine. The kid didn't need him anymore anyways.] Bones can handle himself. He'll be grumpy as hell, but he can do it. We'll just make sure he lets himself pass out once everyone's been fixed up. Right now, he'll be ok.
