Its easy to spread hate on social media
This title surely is very disturbing to read but it is the unfortunate truth. Social media is such a powerful medium that it’s negative impact has started overshadowing the positives. Anybody sitting anywhere being able to disguise themselves and hide behind their online identities and spread hate online is a very dangerous and concerning situation. The fine line between free speech and hate speech when it comes to social media is being crossed comfortably by ‘trollers’ who satisfy their egos by harassing the minorities and vulnerable populations online. What is most disturbing is that users fill the comment sections with hate for no reason other than bringing people down, there is no visible constructive criticism. Forming communities was one of the biggest pluses of having an online identity but that has transformed into the existence of discriminative and hateful “groupism”. It is a common practice to create communities online like #FatPeopleHate and #GenderCritical and use prejudices in order to demean and harrass certain selection of society. It is a good thing that this practice is being noticed and there have been steps taken in order to redue such activity online, but it is still spreading at an alarming rate, a recent example being the rise of Asian American hate in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
