Scene 4: Happy on a Monday?

Scene 5: Jaeyun = Jake

Jake lets out a heavy sigh, falling back against the sofa’s backrest as he stares blankly at the ceiling, “I mean… I kind of expected it, if I’m being honest,” he starts, “things were becoming rocky between us and well… that happened.” He finishes with a wince, a hand reaching out to pat Layla laying in between you both. “Doesn’t mean it hurts any less though.” He laughs bitterly.

“Oh Jake… I’m so sorry. No one deserves that.” You say, feeling your heart twinge at the sight of him as you reach out to take his hand in yours.

He gives you a reassuring squeeze, turning to look at you. “Why are you apologizing? You didn’t do anything wrong.” Maybe that’s what he thinks, but you could list down the number of times you could have saved him from the heartbreak; starting with you admitting your feelings for him, though you knew you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself.

Even if Sunoo was hell-bent on drilling into your head that Jake might possibly return your feelings—still, you can’t help but to be doubtful of his claims.

“I know it’s just...it sucks seeing you like this and not being able to do anything about it.”

Jake lets out a soft huff, “oh none of that, you being here is enough for me.” A barely-there smile graces his lips as he gives your hand another comforting squeeze and you return it with a crooked smile of your own before you let your gaze fall onto a snoozing Layla, her fluffy head still resting idly on your thigh.

There was nothing else left to be said as you both once again lapse into silence. The low humming from the TV was the only thing that’s keeping you from bursting into a panicked state of telling Jake all of the things you never got the chance to say. His warm grasp around your smaller hand at least helped to quell your nerves, ironically enough.

However, just as you were close to falling into a relaxed state, Jake softly called out your name, all the while tugging on your hand to get your full attention.

“H-huh?”

Jake tilts his head slightly, “you look a little out of it. What’s going on?”

Well, here goes nothing. “It’s just… I gotta tell you something and promise you’ll listen until I’m done?” You say with a slight grimace, gently pulling back your now clammy hand from Jake’s grasp

“Of course I’ll listen,” He huffs with a playful eye-roll. “You know you can tell me anything.”

“I know… it’s just—this is kind of a big deal.”

Even though your voice had taken on a gravely tone, the smile still remained on Jake’s lips. “Go for it.”

Taking in a deep breath, you close your eyes. “I’m in love with you,” you start, ignoring the hammering in your chest. “I have been for a long time now and it’s really taking everything in me to not run out of that door ‘cause I’m beyond fucking terrified.”

Laughing softly to yourself, you slowly let your eyes open, though you refuse to look at Jake in the eyes and instead let your gaze rest on Layla as you gently scratch behind one of her ears. “Honestly I don’t know why it took me this long to tell you when I’ve loved you since middle school.” And it’s relieving to completely lay your feelings bare after years of keeping all of this to yourself, even if you wanted the ground to swallow you whole. The least you could do before disappearing is letting Jake know how much he means to you.

Hopeful as you are right at this moment, you didn’t let yourself be lured into a false sense of security even if you were told countless times that the chance of your best friend returning your feelings already exceeds the scale of probability—well, at least that’s what your friends think.

“I admit, I’ve been too much of a coward to do anything back then, I know and I’m sorry I’m hitting you with this right out of the blue when you just broke up with your ex, but I just had to let you know before it’s too late and regret not telling you how much I lo—”

“Y/N.”

The rambling immediately stops.

You look up, “sorry I—” only to freeze at the sight of pain swimming in Jake’s eyes. “You—you don’t feel the same...” You mutter, feeling all choked up all of a sudden.

Jake winces, averting his gaze, “you’re my best friend, Y/N, I don’t—”

You scoff, your eyes already starting to burn as you get to your feet, not wanting to listen to him break your heart even more. “And that’s all I’ll ever be, is that it?” You grit out, nails digging into the palms of you at how tightly you were clenching your fists. “Is it really so bad to feel that way for someone you’ve known your whole life?”

Jake follows suit, alerting Layla who is now fully awake, whimpering as she looks between the two of you. “I did not say that, just listen to me!” He exclaims, a hand shooting out to grab you by the wrist. “Y/N please you’ve got to understand this all new to me! I can’t—”

“Save it. I already got my answer.” You spat out, “now let go of me. I’m leaving.” Wrenching your wrist from his hold, you make your way towards the door.

“Y/N, c’mon! Don’t be stupid it’s raining out!”

Halting in your steps, you turn around slightly, just enough so he could see your bitter smile. “Well I was stupid enough to get my hopes up didn’t I? Now if you’d please let me leave.”

Safe to say, it satisfied you to see the defeated expression on Jake’s face when he couldn’t find anything to say.

And yeah, maybe you were stupid, but you didn’t want to be around him at the moment. Especially when you’re on the verge of crying your eyes out.

If one had the urge to look up what stupid meant, it’s guaranteed that they’ll see a photo of you underneath its description.

It’s lost to you how long you've spent walking in the rain and in complete haste to reach Jake’s place, you forgot to bring extra pocket money for a ride home; then there was your pride not letting you run back to Jake’s.

“Why me?” You pause for a moment, taking in your surroundings for a good moment until your eyes land on a familiar looking tree standing a fair distance away from you. You then break into a sprint, sick and tired of the rain soaking you to the bone that you straight away knocked on the door as if a serial killer was right behind you.

“You better stop or I’ll be calling the poli—Y/N?”

“Hey,” you greet tiredly, eyes starting to water again and that immediately sends them into a frenzy. “Can I come in?”

“Can you—are you an idiot?! Get inside. Now.” and you laugh even if there were fresh tears now running down your cheeks as you were pulled into their arms. “There’s a reason why you look like shit and you need to tell me everything or so help me God.”
