to balance out the torture wip from last week, I figured I’d share something more lighthearted. Was thinking about possible holidays on Mina-Rau and how they had to have at least celebrated the end of a harvest. Maybe some of the larger cities like Rau even had festivals for it.
While most stalls served food, drink and sweets, there were a handful that offered simple games for the children or anyone else willing to test their skills. Those vendors were particularly animated when attempting to entice the people that walked by, their voices booming over the foot traffic. A man in front of a long table with a series of woven baskets–all various sizes and spaced out on ascending platforms–made eye contact with Bix and held up what looked to be three rubber balls.
“Three credits for six throws!” he shouted.
Bix almost ignored him, but then she got an idea. Her feet came to a stop and she held out a hand to halt Imogen as well. The hunter followed her eyeline and furrowed her brows in confusion.
“What could you possibly–Bix,” Imogen interrupted her own question to chase after her as she walked purposefully towards the stall.
The man beamed as they approached. “Hello, there! Care to try your hand at the toss?”
“She wants to,” Bix said and pointed at Imogen.
Imogen bristled. “What?”
“Wonderful!” Even being a few feet from him didn’t change the man’s volume. Bix almost flinched. “Three credits for six throws! Land three balls into the baskets and you win a bier beast! Land all six and you win a puzzle or two bier beasts! Manage to get one ball into the smallest basket at the very top and you automatically win one of the puzzles!”
Now that Bix got a closer look, she saw that the smallest basket looked barely big enough to hold a single ball and must have been ten feet away at least. The other baskets closer to the edge of the table weren’t much larger and they were all tilted, making Bix certain that if they weren’t thrown at just the right angle then the balls would simply bounce back out. She also got a look at the prizes. Small, somewhat crudely stitched plush animals that represented the long horned beasts of burden on the planet and intricate three dimensional puzzles made from beautifully carved and stained wood.
“Since I am not a child,” Imogen grumbled. “I will not be partaking.”
Bix met her hard glare and pouted playfully. “But I want a prize.”
“I could purchase a gift for you at one of the many other stalls.”
“No.” Bix stepped into her space and said her next words slowly and with emphasis as she glanced down at Imogen’s lips. “I want you to win me a prize, Imogen.”
Imogen held her ground for a few long moments before Bix noticed her swallow subtly. Then, much to Bix’s satisfaction, she sighed and reached into her coat’s inner pocket. “This is absurd.”
“You need to learn how to have some harmless fun,” Bix said in a lighthearted tone, but meant it.
Imogen side-eyed her as she passed the vendor the credits and he handed Bix the first three balls. They were solid rubber and had an unexpected weight to them that could only make this challenge more difficult. Bix held one out for Imogen, but abruptly pulled her hand back when she reached for it.
“No cheating,” Bix demanded quietly. She knew Imogen understood what she meant. No Force manipulation. That would be against the spirit of the game and no fun at all.
Imogen did not complain or agree, she simply smirked at her and took the ball. Then, without breaking eye contact, Imogen casually tossed it towards the baskets. The ball landed perfectly into the smallest one. It hadn’t even grazed the rim.
The vendor gaped at the surprising show of apparent skill, but Bix scoffed. “I said no cheating.”
“Is it cheating if I am inherently talented?” Imogen asked, entirely too cocky.
Bix waited until the vendor stepped away to empty the basket before she leaned in and whispered through a deadpan tone “If your inherent talent is space sorcery, then yes.”
Imogen made that soft sound at the back of her throat that Bix had come to recognize as her version of a laugh. She loved how it reverberated smooth and low in Imogen’s chest along with the small upturn at the corner of her mouth. “I cannot simply turn it off like a switch, you know. You may as well ask me to stop my heart from beating.”

So to me - and I'm really allosexual so take this with a grain of salt ig - but to me, Yrliet's bestiality line is brought up as evidence that she's not ace, she just isn't into humans, but the line itself is often really stripped of context.

She's at the end of her rope, isolated in an unfamiliar and dangerous environment, coming to a person with power over her (the Lord Captain) to report that along with being regular harassed, someone has now sexually harassed her, with very little idea how the Lord Captain will receive this. and then you can harass her! or you can tell her shut up and deal with it. or you can say Thank you for trusting me with this, I'll make sure it doesn't happen again, and she's surprised by this response. Yrliet's only defender is Yrliet. She's backed into a corner. Of course she's coming out swinging.
So I think that pointing to this line in particular as evidence of her not liking sex with humans versus being really upset by harassment, including sexual harassment is a weird one.
Honestly I feel that if this scene were to happen to Cassia, it could go beat for beat but with her comparing a commoner/worker to a beast and it wouldn't undermine her allosexuality. And similarly, I think this scene could be cut from Yrliet's storyline, and she would still read as asexual to me.
And like, allo-for-aeldari Yrliet is a not uncanon interpretation. I don't think she ever comes out and says 'I do not enjoy having sex with other aeldari'.
But I think it is uncharitable + flattens her character to say 'well, Yrliet just views humans as animals so that's why she won't fuck my Lord Captain!' -- because she also spirit bonds with you, and trusts you, and will romance you; and on the flip side doesn't enjoy even chaste touch, and continues to not want physical intimacy even when you're in a monogamous romantic relationship. To strip it down to well it's just bc you're human, Yrliet would be totally down to fuck an eldar, ignores the larger context of that line in particular + the whole rest of her romance or friendship.
