Hi, I'm Jacks (Jabbajacks) and I'm here to play and yell a bunch about Kodaka and Uchikoshi's games, so I made a sideblog exactly for that purpose. Let's have fun! Currently: The Hundred Line absorbed. Mind for spoilers
Hundred Line Last Defense Academy (Demo) FULL GAME

Currently: The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy absorbed
#HL rerun: home watch is where I followed my partner playing, so watch for retrospective spoilers in that.
#Takumi psych eval is where I canβt stop yapping about a certain protagonistβs mental health/identity issues and I expect to get worse-Β #Karutaku codependency, #Takumom talk and #Kamukura Files are related while #Umiko tag is my designated transfem Takumi tag. Much of that stuff is scattered so hereβs a jumping off point for the Takumi neglect issue and why I tend to be stuck on it.

'What is Takumi Sumino on, saying 'I'll be your daddy now'?'
I believe he's on what some might call 'being five years old', haha
In all seriousness, maybe neurodivergence is a factor too. A lot of times you don't know how to express particular things at that age- that is, you don't really have an appropriate script for situations like this if you've never encountered it, hence, offering to 'be Dad' because 'Dad presence makes less Sadness'. Takumi in this scene sounds like he's playing some script that he's learned - the 'Dad not going to heaven if you're sad' thing, er, yikes - and then trying to adapt in a way that might help, just in case Karua's sad again and then that horrible thing happens. Kid's trying to use his brain in his way of comforting!
...Though frankly that opens the can of worms that is 'where did that script come from'. Either Takumi has picked it up directly, or he's inferring it himself through for example, being told how to deal with 'unwanted emotions'. Either one is honestly pretty fucked up and could say a lot about the 'regular citizenry' of the complex, not to mention how this could lead into a promise that's so 'normal' but so unhealthy.
Keeping this reading in mind, would Takumi have problems with Nozomi, because of issues in his and Karua's relationship?
I feel like that's not entirely straightforward...
For one, sure if you scratch the surface of his neuroses enough you might find negativity over feeling stuck in the same cycles, because of how formative they were. But on top of how deeply rooted it is, and with the way he has cognitive dissonance over who Nozomi is, there's a part of him that genuinely considers her to be a different person- and does find her very different when he's observing well enough.
For another, I don't think his and Karua's relationship was truly static even if it had (potentially serious) issues. There was some development going later on in the memories- Takumi being more responsive to her whims instead of dismissive the way he is in gradeschool, and Karua declaring she'll be the one to help Takumi out of trouble, effectively reversing the promise (the dog memory). It's just that there was no real help for Karua while she latched onto Takumi, who is not a therapist, so she reverts to begging for the promise, hence the 'damsel effect'.
The response to the siren noise is one of the key points where Takumi differentiates them besides, so even if he's always going to help over Nozomi's rejection symptoms (which... well, could kill her) it's not as if his monkeybrain is always going to align Nozomi and Karua 1 to 1. If anything he and Nozomi have baggage in common (complex trauma over a desire to protect) where they could understand each other in the right circumstances. It's just the Karua lens messes things up for them rather a lot, especially considering a whole lot of Nozomi is in Karua.

Look, leaving aside some of the extreme projection issues with some of my early posts I kind of miss having the audacity to post whatever plagued me in the wee hours of the morning. It's just not the same
(What happened? The brainworms. The brainworms happened)
It's been over a year of stewing in it all, and I'm long overdue a general summary: why have I been fixated on Takumi having emotional neglect and related trauma, when there are other characters in the roster who fit the bill more? What's there to see in his story that's really so bad?
Well, leaving my early speculations aside, it isn't about that.
(Also leaving aside other complications with the memories for the time being- that's a conversation for another time)
For one, it's the vibes. Itβs the feeling that permeates his background in a way that I feel like doesnβt happen for any other- the sneaking feeling of 'is this really normal' underneath a mask. And sometimes that's enough, especially when the introduction shows self-esteem issues- emotional neglect is one thing that's very much deniable to the sufferer, as well as being hard for other people to notice just looking.
Also, the thing about 'normal' is that it's basically 'all you've ever known', regardless of whether or not everything's 'all right'. So you can have lots of photos that look like everything's fine, but every now and then there's one that looks strained, like the subjects are trying to mask. And, of course there's an explanation. Ex: 'It's a formal photo. That toddler is just sleepy. The sun's in that boy's eyes. It was a bad shot of the mother. They She didn't like that dress.' Except it sticks out like a sore thumb doesn't it? Why are there happy(tm) photos where no one is happy?
In Takumi's case, we see 'snippets' of his mundane home life, with one indicating a wall between him and his only close friend while at school. It could be that he was just annoyed with her that day, or a sign that he was becoming strained around her and he needed space- space to grow, beyond the promise and being the 'psuedo-dad' for Karua. This would be less a matter of his story, were it not apparent that Takumi's codependency problem can extend to the role of Team Leader later, starting from when he cowed into it after awkwardly taking praise.
It's also telling how his authority figure keeps him tied to his 'would-be romantic interest' - similar to how Sirei uses her as motivation - likely since he was very young. So if it happens that young Takumi was strained, he might have had no means of escaping that other than to dissociate early on, while dealing with swathes of his own neglected emotions. It's a basis for him being emotionally disturbed even before being brought into the war, which could explain the 'out of pocket' extreme, suicidal behaviour and self-harm ideation when he is.
The way Takumi sees it, the sirens and their reason for existing are just 'how it is'- and if he has questioned this state of affairs before, he's shut down and rationalised it over the years, something that makes him vulnerable to passive acceptance. Which would follow that the same extends to his own life, with him being at a loss for a point of reference. More importantly, he seems to have cognitive dissonance over the 'normality' in his life vis a vis him and Karua- a part of him knows well that their relationship is not normal to others, but he doesn't seem to interrogate that belief to any real conclusion. Such as, what did that mean? Was it healthy? Was he really the person he wanted to be?
Rather than 'are we normal?' Takumi needed to ask 'are we okay?'
From its basis, the 'plausible deniability' of his issues can be extremely vexing. It can be so easy to over-state what's going on, especially when from his protagonist-perspective there's nothing to be seen. But the matter here is Takumi's habitual lack of reliability to himself- he would determine that nothing was wrong if he couldn't see what was wrong. This 'out of sight, out of mind' attitude to his own problems as well as stubbornness to 'keep normality' is so quintessentially Takumi. It just so happens that this could be a complex trauma response as well.
A lot of people take this as very aromantic-energy for Takumi and I partly agree, though the way one of these routes ends is with him being deeply confused about his feelings as well as disturbed at himself.
On top of that, he and Karua were in an oddly static but close relationship growing up, suggesting a 'push and pull' along with the context of the promise (protect, but also marry later). So this would suggest to me he's never really sorted out his feelings one way or another, rather than not clicking with the concept- the notion of him not being aromantic - or having one 'part' that is but another that isn't - sure makes this identity confusion a whole lot more tumultuous inside him. Especially if he's never had the chance to discuss it with anyone.
Or, if he's actively avoided the subject when it's come up in the past.

People never really like gross slob gamer girls. It's just so romanticized, like, "ohh, I can turn her into a better person" and whatnot, but if they actually see a character and/or a person like that they're disgusted or annoyed.. Darumi needs someone who actually cares for her and helps her to get better
canon is what happens in the text. e.g. merlin tries to poison morgana
a headcanon is a fact that you have personally made up as an elaboration of canon. it is your invention. e.g. i think morgana and gwen had a teenage lesbian situationship before the events of canon. or, i think modern morgana would love evanesence.
an interpretation is how one reads the existing text. it is not an invented fact nor is it a headcanon, it is a reading. e.g. i think merlin tries to poison morgana out of misplaced self-hatred. or, i think that one line was delivered with suppressed malice and shows a nuanced relationship.
fanon is the general fandomβs accepted headcanons and interpretations that elaborate or recontextualize canon. e.g. merlin is a badass waif and morgana is a bitch.
these are all different words with different meanings.
OKAY!! DISCLAIMER!! this is fully self indulgent because i relate to takumi a lot and i think(?) i have bpd?? hopefully i can manage this semi-coherently so ahem
also minor spoilers for comedy and vague mentions of multiple eitos (and route 0)
a lot of this is pretty self explanatory to me but let me start off with FAVORITE PERSONS. in bpd, a favorite person is someone you become strongly emotionally attached to, who you rely on heavily for validation and support, and you absolutely cannot bear to be without. and of course in takumi's case, i mean karua... i always thought it was interesting how takumi never seemed to think about his mom or dad in r0, but everything reminded him of karua, right? she was always his main focus, and i like to imagine he was kind of co-dependent on her. IF he had any other friends, no one was as important to him as she was, and he panicked when they were separated even though you'd think as a teenager he would be more worried about his parents.... ALSO!! in a few different routes, i think his favorite person shifts to other people, and he'll entirely stop thinking about karua because all of his focus now goes on his new special person. that doesnt mean he doesnt care about karua anymore, but his brain has just latched onto someone new, like the average tumblr user with a new blorbo except to him these are his REAL human relationships. i also like to think at one point in r0, eito was his favorite person and that's why takumi crashed out so bad on day 95. like, he had this idealized version of eito in his head who could do no wrong, he was someone takumi relied on, but of course he wasnt what he thought he was, which caused takumi to split. thats not really important though....
another thing is sudden plummeting self esteem when something happens. my favorite example of this is?? i believe comedy route?? where takumi goes insane over thinking that nozomi has no affection for him, i dont really remember all of the details but if youve played that route you KNOW what im talking about (i think)
impulsivity babeyyyy... i know a lot of the game requires takumi to make quick decisions sometimes but he is SO self sacrificial and impulsive its like not even funny. not to mention endurance match.... looks at you and looks at you and looks at you. oh and cult of takumi?? our boy was literally just doing anything, he dont CAAAAAREEE
apparently some more symptoms are "ongoing feelings of emptiness" and "strong anger, losing your temper often, being sarcastic and bitter, or physically fighting"
again i feel like its fairly self explanatory, honestly a LOT being from comedy, like... do you know what im talking about please say yes
