Again, a very unusual post. I went to an all male prep school and bathing suits were not allowed in the pool,but neither were cameras, let alone publishing the pictures in the yearbook. Amazing! Those were days of great innocence, but also of great isolation for gay boys. Congratulations on the great job you are doing in this site.
Again, I don’t know. I’m a bit too young. But according to my father and all my uncles, these things varied from region to region. Some people can’t believe boys ever swam naked, and some people can’t believe boys were ever allowed to wear suits. My family has several photos of my father’s and uncles’ swim teams in the nude, so I know cameras were allowed in some places. I also have a couple of newspaper articles that published photos of naked boys swimming (at the YMCA and at school), so it couldn’t have been much of a scandal back then. The fathers of a couple of friends of mine have said they clearly remember their mothers and sisters coming to watch the (all naked) boys swim team, at both practices and meets, and no attempt was ever made to cover the boys. Apparently, neither the boys nor the school administration (or parents) cared at all. But again, it varied from place to place.
