Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall project was undertaken to develop and design an informative and innovative interactive digital display, located landside arrivals at the international BAC terminal. The project aims to positivity improve the quality of user experience at the terminal for both passengers and the public. The desired aesthetic of the project, including all digital artefacts and interfaces, aims to be intuitive for both user interaction and sharing of information. The project aims to follow three main criteria: • To be aesthetically inviting • Informative of Queensland • Sustainable for future developments The brief was first defined as an Art-wall to showcase Brisbane through the use of Australian Aboriginal artworks but was further developed intro three main functionalities of the wall: • Showcase what Queensland has to offer tourists, travellers and the world • Give travellers a form of visual interaction during idle time in the airport terminal • Create a piece of artwork visually enticing to the users Together with our supervisor Deb Polson the brief was adapted according to team capabilities, project feasibility and developing knowledge of exemplar existing works and technologies.
Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall prototype animation video reveals user interaction features of the project as well as visual aesthetic and motion reactions of digital artefacts. The prototype demonstrates interactions with users at a far, near and close proximity to the eq Wall.

The eq Wall will be in sync with the Australian Eastern Time Zone for Brisbane (UTC+10:00) via an online service. Using a specific location and time zone allows a wider range of possibilities for interactive displays. Synced features that will be added to the eq Wall include: • 24hour local time for Brisbane (UTC+10:00) • Sunrise and sunset times determining the speed of change with the movement of the sun • Lunar cycle to display the current moon phase
Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall Step-by-Step Interaction - A1 Presentation Poster The eq Wall is a large scale informative digital touch and motion interaction display, made up of six multi-touch screens, Kinect motion capture, and directional speakers, spanning over 3.7 metres in length and 2.2 metres in height. The project aims to follow three main criteria, to be aesthetically inviting, informative of Queensland and sustainable for future developments.

Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall Step-by-Step Interaction - Step 1 As people walk past the eq wall (Explore Queensland Wall) a formation of opaque overlapping circles will follow their trail through the use of a sensory responsive interaction. The colours of the circles will be taken from the palette of colours already used in the artwork with the use of an overlapping effect to mix and make vibrant colours. The trail will appear 400mm from behind and 200mm in front of the targeted user. This will capture not only their attention, but also the attention of surrounding onlookers sparking curiosity of the functionalities of this wall.
Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall Step-by-Step Interaction - Step 2 Once the user has noticed the response the wall has to their movement by walking past, they may choose to stop and try other hand-gestures such as waving. Also a rhythm of sound is created as the reaction occurs when users walk past. The sounds will be set to predetermined colours. This will allow the user to explore more interactions the wall has to offer. Whilst distracted the previous cluster will slowly disappear allowing for the artwork to return to its normal form.
Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall Step-by-Step Interaction - Step 3 After the user has been standing admiring the eq wall for a certain period of time a menu screen will appear from behind the cluster of dots with them being pushed and moved into an oval shape to reveal the menu. This menu consists of elements Queensland has to offer and informative visualisations. They provide but are not limited to Queensland Weather, Calendar of Events, Postcards (photos of tourist attractions and places to explore), Nature and Industry.
Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall Step-by-Step Interaction - Step 4 This menu will be presented in a slider format where people will be able to slide through (from left to right) and choose their menu option. Multiple users can be interacting with the eq wall being placed in the arrivals area will be open to the public and travellers to play and interact with. Once a certain option has been chosen the information found will be able to be shared to the user via Bluetooth or email.
Innovation in the Creative Industries 2014 QUT Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The eq Wall Weather The weather interface is to be run live, in sync with an online weather service, for example Yahoo Weather. The weather icon on the main menu interface will therefore be a live feed icon that will change with the weather forecast predicted on the online weather service. The weather interface within the main menu interface will display the predicted weather of the Brisbane City Region with a five day graphical forecast and observations. When exploring through other areas of the menu interface, such as events or postcard image locations, a live weather icon will be displayed below the content informing weather predicted details and five day forecast of the event/location being viewed. Through the weather feature, animations of the eq artwork will change with the weather conditions of Brisbane.

Advanced Practice in Interactive and Visual Design 2013 QUT Year 1 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation The Brisbane International SmartAirport Application aims to personalise a user’s experience during their time at an airport terminal, whether arriving or departing from Brisbane. This application would create and store a large database of users to create a more efficient interaction and flowing process throughout the terminal.
Advanced Practice in Interactive and Visual Design 2013 QUT Year 1 Semester 1 Master of Creative Industries - Interaction and Visual Design Collaboration with Brisbane Airport Corporation This is achieved by the use of unique SmartProfiles, to be stored on the database. These SmartProfiles would hold the user’s following details: • Details of all domestic and international flights. • Flight check in and departure gates. • Passport and personal details. These SmartProfiles aim to be developed to be shared between not only the user and Brisbane Airport Corporation, but also Australian Customs and Border Protection, as well as Airlines. Through the use of the SmartProfile feature, interactive digital SmartForms were developed for passenger arrival and departure cards. Due to the application being used on a smart hand held device, it can be displayed in the chosen language of the user’s device. For example, if Korean was the device’s primary language, the application would be automatically displayed in Korean. The option to change the language manually is also available through the settings feature. With the SmartForms being linked to the SmartProfile, the application intuitively enters details known to the application, for example, the auto filling of personal and flight details from the SmartProfile, and if a user is departing or arriving the country, the application would display the relevant application form. This saves time, hassle, confusion and paper – ultimately reducing the processing time of passengers at airports, increasing their passenger throughput numbers and reducing average passenger processing times.
