Being against Meta's camera glasses isn't ableism. I'm disabled, I've followed wearable tech and Meta scandals for years, and I want to be precise about what's happening here: The "you're ableist if you object" framing is a marketing retrofit on a surveillance product. Here's is how we got here:

Meta did not build these glasses for blind people. Meta's own VP, Freddy Abnousi, admitted the company "did not specifically create these enhanced glasses for individuals with visual impairments." Yet Meta's 2026 materials now claim accessibility "was never an afterthought." Both can't be true.

The timeline gives it away. 2020 Project Aria, 2021 Ray-Ban Stories: zero accessibility framing. The goal was harvesting first-person camera data to train AI. Accessibility only became a marketing centerpiece in 2026 — the exact moment the privacy scandals hit.

What scandals? Swedish media revealed Meta routed glasses footage — bathrooms, nudity, financial documents — to contract labelers in Kenya for AI training. A US class action followed. This is the same data pipeline now sold as "it helps blind people read labels."

The tech wasn't funded by some accessibility mission. It's funded by surveillance advertising — Reality Labs has burned ~$83.6B since 2020, absorbed by Meta's ad business. And it's now being built into a US Army combat headset (Meta + Anduril, $159M contract, same optics).

Meta's CTO said the quiet part out loud: "Everything we are doing is for consumers… a lot of that technology could be multi-use." Multi-use = your face-camera, the soldier's combat visor, and the "accessibility" demo are the same platform. Accessibility is one bolt-on use.

The trap is the false binary: accessibility VS privacy. Disabled people deserve assistive tech AND data rights. Privacy-first alternatives already exist — OrCam ran fully offline, Envision uses GDPR opt-in models. Meta CHOSE the surveillance model. That was a choice, not physics.

So no — criticizing always-on face cameras owned by the most-fined privacy violator in history isn't ableism. It's refusing a false trade. We can use the technology for our benefit without trading our rights. In fact, Meta has been squashing the very companies that are building assistive tech that prioritize disability first with privacy built in...

"But the glasses HELP blind people!" Sure — and so do products actually built for us, often with far better privacy. They're just being drowned out by a $300 surveillance device. Here are a few examples:

OrCam MyEye: processed everything OFFLINE, on-device, no cloud. Purpose-built for blind users. It solved "the privacy puzzle that stumped Google Glass." It discontinued its entire vision division in July 2024. Valuation fell from $1.5B to ~$150M.

Envision Glasses: uses its OWN GDPR-compliant AI models, not third-party LLMs, with OPT-IN data sharing. Co-founder: people who "simply integrate ChatGPT… don't really know what's happening to the data." Envision was designed so you do.

On-device by design: Biped's NOA and .lumen glasses run their AI locally — no streaming your life to an ad company's servers. WeWalk's smart cane ($850) doesn't even put a camera on your surroundings. Endorsed by CNIB, RNIB, Vision Australia.

The catch: dedicated assistive tech costs $2,000–$4,500 because it's built for a small market with almost no funding — less than 1–2% of all VC goes to disability tech. Meta sells at $299 because the glasses are a rounding error against ~$439M/day in ad revenue.
