The PillowΒ
EMILY is sitting on a plane moving her neck and tapping her feet. Sheβs sitting in the aisle seat. Thereβs a passed-out man at the window seat.Β
ENTER: TOM. He motions Emily to get up so he can sit. She gets up and Tom sits down in the middle seat.Β
TOM: Are you alright? You look a bit... Stiff. Afraid of flying?Β
EMILY: No, it's my neck. (Frustrated) I use the window if I can- (motions to Tom and the man) so I can lean.Β
TOM: But if you canβt? Like right now?Β
EMILY: When I go to Germany, I have a middle seat. My girlfriend has the window so I can lay on her.Β
Tom holds out a neck pillow.Β
TOM: Why not use one of these?Β
Emily takes it.Β
EMILY: Itβs for my neck? (She gives it back) I donβt want to be one of those people.Β
Tom puts it behind her neck.Β
TOM: I use one.Β
EMILY: (Settling into the pillow and getting dazed) You do?Β
Tom rolls his eyes.Β
EMILY: (Getting comfy) It is actually quite squishy... But I canβt just lay down--Β
TOM: And you canβt do bad neck things.Β
EMILY: (Realizing) OH MY GOD! Iβm one of those people!Β Β
TOM: They also have blow up ones that travel better.Β
EMILY: And here I am. Sitting next to one of those people.Β
TOM: You are one of those people.Β
EMILY: (Quietly) ...I am one of those people.Β
The plane engines whirr, signaling the plane is taking off.Β
Tom looks smug as Emily is agonizing about her new comfort.Β
