The purpose of this project was to respond to an artist who works different from myself. I chose to look at artists and designers who deal with concepts, such as Lucien Freud and Sarah Lucas. I found myself most inspired by their work Freud's and Lucas' work themed upon the female body and, decided that I wanted to mirror their theme in my collection. Before I began designing clothes, I devised an anonymous poll, where I asked women (of the ages 18-21) if they had any "insecurities" and "if so, what were they". Majority of the women were insecure about their thighs, arms, legs, breasts and stomachs. I then began sketching outfits inspired by the common insecurities and used different processes such as collaging and painting in order to develop my ideas further.
In order to develop my understanding of the female body, I started to attend life drawing sessions in and outside of college, studying the different shapes and forms of the models.
The concept behind my designs is to redefine the presentation of the “The Perfect Body” presented in the media, and in some problematic catwalks such as the annual Victoria Secret one. In addition, I also want to expose the diversity of the female body and to encourage women to love their body parts.
