           ❛   Good morning.     How are you? Does it hurt terribly?   ❜

           ❛   Don’t be so ridiculous.     That would never work.   ❜

           ❛   Does this look right to you?     Are strands standing in the back?   ❜

           ❛   I see you lied     on your enlistment form.  So did I.   ❜

               He’s really got to get into the habit    of not swearing, but Victoria can’t bring herself to correct him right now. She’s come to find his language stupidly endearing. Apparently, no one else in the family found it so.   ❛  She’ll be a fifteen at best,  ❜   Victoria tells him with a barely opened mouth - lips showing the restraint she knows her mother won’t have. She rolls her eyes yet again and readjusts her arm around his neck, reaffirming her own position on the matter (as if she needs to.)   ❛  But it’s got nothing to do with her anyway. I know uncle will be none too pleased either, and that is a problem, but--  he’s old.  We’ll tire him out sooner or later.  ❜

               She feels a quiver in her throat.    Of course it’s his mother’s ring. If he had gone to a jeweler’s it would be national news---  She feels the weight of it around her finger, both literally and symbolically. Victoria is dizzy as she stands and wouldn’t have moved at all if he hadn’t helped. She throws her arms around him in a tight embrace, laughter burying in the crook of his neck.   ❛  I love you too,  ❜   she says, voice high-pitched with glee. In the back of her mind she knows this is going to be a long and painful engagement, but it’s happy for now.   ❛  I had no idea you were even considering it, how did--- Why now?  ❜ 

            ❛   Anatole,     why have you come here? If it is to apologise to Prince Andrei, I’m afraid he’s already left.   ❜

                Victoria sinks to her knees,    leveling her face to his. She limply wraps her hands around the box, laughter distracting from the light coating of tears that fill her eyes. The ring is new, it must be. She always expected to wear a family ring, one that held little significance to her. If he had asked to look in the collection, he would have been refused, and she certainly would have found out. Royal proposals are scarcely a surprise. It’s beautiful to look at, but more importantly, it’s hers.   ❛  I will,  ❜   she finally answers, feeling a delightful sting of adrenaline. She rolls her eyes with amusement before continuing, sure the situation warrants a chuckle.     ❛  But I have to ask- really, I do. If you weren’t  you  someone would have told you already. James, will you marry me?  ❜
